Still Dismal
Our temperature of 32.2 last evening was the low for the overnight. In fact the temperature has gone up a degree and a half since then. The sky is still overcast and it is raining lightly. I have taken in my rain gauge because of the threat of freezing temperatures, so for the time being I am using data from Souther Road in Livermore Falls for the precipitation. Their data and mine have corresponded very closely over the last several months, so until my weather station arrives and can be set up I will use theirs for rainfall totals. I will also note this data as estimated (est.).
Since it still has not gone below freezing for an extended period of time, causing the frost to go deep into the ground, it is giving me the time to get the mulch hay over my garlic and peas protecting them from frost damage. Mulching them will do two things. First it will insulate them from the extreme cold to some degree. Second it will tend to protect against excessive weed growth in the spring. Both of these actions will be beneficial. Obviously I will note the results in the spring when things get to growing.
The other point I wanted to note was that the prognosticators did get this one correct. The temperature did not go up very much yesterday, what started as snow changed to rain and the temperature hovered near the freezing mark overnight. That was a pretty good hit for their forecast. Good Job!
