The Sky: Virtually Clear

N.O.A.A. and I were right overnight. We did not have any additional foul weather, and the sky did clear almost completely. Despite the clear sky we did not have the radiational cooling that would have been expected. The temperature did not fall as far as it could have, and it did moderate during the overnight hours. I have heard some of the weather prognosticators say that there are times that they look at the N.W.S. forecasts, and all their instruments and decide that they have seen the patterns before. They then disagree with all of the data presented and, as I did last night, go off on their own and are correct. It is nice to get one right once in a while.
For today the N.O.A.A. forecast says we will have no foul weather, the sky will remain clear and the temperature will rise above the freezing mark. In fact it is already almost 35°F. Their forecast, then, is for a delightful early winter day. There is some snow on the ground, so the ski areas should be operating at nearly full capacity. A great day to get outside and enjoy the winter sports.
My Weather Stick points straight out, and again, with 56% relative humidity that is expected. My Weather Station Console forecasts partly cloudy skies with improving barometric pressure. The other two electronic instruments forecast fair skies with improving barometric pressure. With all the data, including the tabulated data at the end of the report, my best guess is that we are going to have a dry, moderately warm day, with clear skies and moderate temperatures and light but variable wind. What a way to close out the year. May I be among the first to extend best wishes for a safe and sane New Years Eve, and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year, 2007.

Overall N.O.A.A. did an excellent job on the temperature forecast but they missed the mark at the beginning of the evening, and hit the bull’s-eye at the end of the overnight period on the relative humidity forecast.
Forecast data for today.
Temperature: 18°F/25°F/32°F/32°F.
