Cloudy End Again

The sun played peek-a-boo with us for most of the day, but it finally gave up late this afternoon as the cloud deck rolled in over us with some rain threatening. There are storms ranging around us, but it has not rained here this afternoon. The temperature has fallen from its high of just over ninety to around 70 degrees. The goats and sheep are outside enjoying the results of all the rain we have had in May and June, which is grass that is over 3 feet tall all aver the pasture. They are all certainly losing their winter coats as a result.

A repeat of Yesterday?

This morning there is a ground fog which has reduced visibility to between .25 and .5 miles. It is so humid that it feels like everything is just sticking to you. We did not have a great deal more rain last night, only about .05 inches. We will see tomorrow what the totals for the month were, particularly if thundershowers pop up again this afternoon and evening like they did yesterday. The instrument readings certainly indicate a repeat of yesterday.

Hazy, Hot and Humid Again

This morning I took a hike with a friend up Bald Mountain in Washington Township (between Wilton and Weld). The view from the top showed just how hazy it was today, which was the prelude to the storms that followed. The thunderstorms that have been threatening the area every afternoon have finally gotten their act together. At about 17:00 hours they started with a crash and a bang. The temperature has dropped from its high of 90.5 to under 70 since about 16:00 hours. Now at 20:30 hours it is still raining, but the thunder seems to have dissipated. I will say this, our goats and sheep appeared to be quite pleased that they were allowed to come inside the barn before the rain began.

Filtered Sun

About 21:30 last night there was a shower that produced about a tenth of an inch of rain. Despite that the lightning bugs were still quite active. This morning the predominant feature is the high thin cirrus cloud cover. The sun is shining right through this, but it is definitely not as bright as it could be.

Overcast End

Once again the clouds rolled in late this afternoon, and although it was humid the breeze made it quite bearable. We did go through periods of sunshine and clouds until this evening when the sky became completely overcast. The grass was dry enough to mow and the pepper patch got weeded. With the temperature hovering in the mid-eighties it was definitely warm. I also noticed that there are strawberries getting ripe.

Foggy, Foggy Dew

It certainly is steamy this morning between the fog and temperature in the mid-sixties. The visibility is down to about a quarter of a mile, and motorists are driving with their headlights on. Once the fog burns off and the grass dries out it should be possible to do just about anything outdoors.

Hazy, Hot and Humid Today

We are approaching the carbon copy report of Hazy, Hot and Humid for the observation. It is almost hard to believe that 8 weeks ago there was almost no color on the trees and now everything is a verdant green and flower gardens are in full bloom. Clouds continue to pop up during the afternoon, but we still have had no rain. Just to note after yesterday's report was submitted some of those clouds did generate some thunder and lightening, but there was no rain, and they passed by without incident in this area.

An Overcast Start

The sun rose this morning behind a fairly heavy overcast. There was very little if any dew on the grass. It was a bit oppressive. There was no rain overnight, but that says nothing about today. I guess we will see what happens. It is interesting to note that this is the highest barometric pressure we have seen since I started keeping these records nearly 2 months ago.

Sunny and Hot Afternoon

It has been sunny and hot all afternoon, and although there have been some thunderheads around I have not heard any thunder or seen any rain. It is not quite as oppressive as it was yesterday, but it did get hotter than it did. I have a thermometer on the sunny side of the house, and while it was not in the direct sun it did register 111.6 degrees. So, if you were standing in the sun and complained of the heat you were justified. There have been rumors that it may be cooler tomorrow.

Hazy, Hot and Humid Morning

At 11:00 it is already hazy, hot and humd. The temperature is over 90 degrees, so it is time to break out the shorts and short sleeves. A day at the beach would probably be in order. It warmed up quickly this morning to a high of 93.1 degrees. Early in the evening the sun went down as a massive red globe. By 20:00 hours the temperature had dropped into the mid eighties and it was becoming comfortable again.. There were some thunderheads around, but we did not have any rain

Summery Morning

After a low of 57.6 degrees by 8:00 AM the temperature is up to 75. Last night there was a heavy dew again. It appears that we are into a summer day, hazy, hot and humid. This will be a nice day to be outside doing what we do in Maine, be it lawn care, gardening, fishing or swimming at the lake to stay cool.

This afternoon has been mostly cloudy with occasional very light sprinkles, which did not produce enough precipitation to measure. It was warm, but the breeze made it quite comfortable. What an absolutely delightful day. There was a little breeze to keep the insects at bay, which made this, in my opinion a nine. The only downside was the cloudiness that rolled in late in the afternoon, but still a great day.

The rain came to an end early this morning, the skies cleared and the sun came out. The lawn is now dry and can be mowed, and the garden can be planted. All in all a delightful afternoon. The current temperature is 70.5 degrees and with the lower humidity it is extremely comfortable.

Rainy morning

It is raining this morning, but there has not been enough to record in the rain gauge. The garden plot has dried out, and this rain should not prevent soil preparation tomorrow, or even lawn mowing this afternoon. We can hope that the showers which we are now experiencing will stop fairly soon. Just as a note we have had 5.65 inches of precipitation so far during the month of June, and there is still a week left. Can we say soggy?

This will not make the nearly 2000 bicyclists who are riding in the Trek Across Maine very happy. Right now it is a fine drizzle, but it has added another 0.2 inches of precipitation to our total. The grass is getting so tall that it is beginning to short out the electric fence. It is needless to say that the goats and sheep appreciate having a dry barn to stay in. I don't want to go outside in this weather either. It is no wonder that the gardens are way behind.

Barometric Pressure: 29.52 in. Hg
Description: Wilton armed up quickly, and while there were some clouds during the afternoon the weather stayed dry. It was possible to see some showers around to the north, but they did not make it here. It was a great day for mowing lawns, planting gardens or just riding a bicycle.

May Summary

Average Low Temperature: 38.12
Average High Temperature: 61.93
Sky-AM: 24 mornings with overcast skies
Sky-PM: 25 afternoons with overcast or cloudy skies
Precipitation: 17 days had measurable precipitation.
Amount: 8.00 inches
Narrative: Of the 30 days in May, which this observer recorded, there were 24 mornings and 25 afternoons where Wilton had some overcast or clouds. In addition there were 17 days that had rain for a total of 8.00 inches of precipitation. This did not allow the bees to get out to pollenate the fruit trees, and anyone wanting to plant a garden has certainly been delayed. The lawns have certainly enjoyed the water, and have shown it by growing to excess.
