Good Morning

This is another in a string of great nights and good mornings. The weather is absolutely gorgeous. There are a few more clouds than there were yesterday, but the sun is out, it is not raining and for all the vacationers and weekend warriors there is very little to complain about. The barometer is higher than it has been since I started this and all the indicators that I have around my yard from a heavy dew to a weather stick that shows that the weather is not going to change today it is going to be a good day weather-wise.

Another Fine Day

There were a few cumulus or what I call "fair Weather" clouds that passed over early this afternoon, but they have dissipated for the most part. I spent my time this afternoon clearing a fence line to enable my goats to get to some more pasture. That should be ready for them tomorrow, since, if things continue, it will be another beautiful day.

Gorgeous

With the barometric pressure approaching 30 inches of mercury we are probably in for one beautiful day. The temperatures started out in the mid fifties and the relative humidity is fairly low also. If you have anything to do outside today is the day to do it. The few clouds that I saw around this morning should dissipate, and the dew that is so heavy on the grass will dry up leaving us clear and dry. Have a great Saturday!!

Great Start to the Weekend

What a great start to the weekend. This is the kind of day we should have had in June, and even a few of them in May, but we need to be thankful for what we have. This was a day to go bicycling, working on fence lines, harvesting in the garden if you got one planted during this spring, or anything else you wanted to do. The dew on the grass this morning was very heavy, but it dried off quickly and has been a gorgeous day. WOW!!

Clear, Cool and Dry

We have had another delightful night. It was foggy early, but at this point (07:30) the fog has burned off leaving us with clear skies, low temperatures but a humid atmosphere. All in all this is a good start to a summer day. If you had this week off for vacation you picked a good one. We had some heat, one day with showers in the afternoon, but the rest has been gorgeous.

Today was a '10'

What more can be said about a day like today? It has been cool, clear and dry. This was great day to do whatever you wanted to outside. There were a few cirrus clouds that passed over this morning, but they came to naught. Even the farmers and sailors get it wrong now and then. All the portents of this morning also came to nothing but a beautiful day. I would rate this as a 10 for sure.

Nice Morning

The barometric pressure has rebounded since yesterday, the temperature and humidity have fallen making for a very nice night for sleeping. There was also plenty of dew on the grass. The sky this morning, as seen below, shows a mix of sun and clouds with a trace of red. This can frequently portend some still unsettled weather, but I am not so sure today. Only the observations this afternoon will tell for sure.

Humid with Thunderstorms

There were some light ;showers during the day, enough to wet the streets, but not enough to measure. While the heat index and dew points based on the high temperatures show some very uncomfortable tropical air the current readings (18:00 hours) show a dew point of 61.7 and heat index of 72.5 degrees F. The thunderstorm that went through around 17:00 hours certainly had some heavy rain, almost an inch in less than an hour. This should help wring some of the moisture out of the air and make it more comfortable overnight.

Very Humid

This is the lowest barometric pressure I have seen since I started this in May. There have been some showers around, but there was only enough rain to obliterate the tracks in my driveway and wet the street. It also made the trees wet enough that when I walked under them I was "rained" on. Not enough rain fell to measure in my rain gauge. This does not look to be a very nice morning, but again time will tell.

Overcast, Hot and Humid

While it was 90.0 degrees at its warmest this afternoon the dew point has risen from the mid fifties to over 70, and perhaps that is a better measure of discomfort than the heat index, that did reach 98 this afternoon. The clouds have also thickened and lowered as the afternoon has passed. We are still having some periods of sun, although it is filtered, and I would not be surprised to see showers around the area before the night is through.

Unsettled Today??

The dew was so heavy this morning that the dog was soaked when I brought him in from his morning constitutional. The sky was also red in the east, a very pretty sunrise. There were also high thin cirrus clouds having the appearance of "Mares Tails and Mackerel Scales". Based on old farmer and seafarer adages plus the relatively low barometer, and without looking at any radar suspect that we will see some unsettled weather today.

Unsettled

The barometric pressure has certainly dropped since yesterday afternoon. This usually portends some unsettled weather, and today has been off and on cloudy with off and on very light showers. There was no measurable precipitation, but the rain did drive me inside several times. Other than the occasional shower it has not been a bad day. The breezes kept the insects at bay and when the sun was out it was quite pleasant.

Shower to Start

This morning as I took the dog out for his morning walk at 05:15 it started to rain lightly on the very wet grass. There was a very heavy dew, and the prospects of some rain appear to be quite good. Just to note, yesterday evening while I was out doing chores I noted that there were some high thin cirrus clouds about having the appearance of "Mares Tails and Mackerel Scales", that frequently portend rain within 24 hours.

This has been another summer day that I do not believe anyone can complain about. Wow! What a Day!!

What an absolutely gorgeous day! As I noted this morning I went for a bicycle ride for the Bicycle Coalition of Maine in the Rockland, St. Georges Peninsula area. It was incredible. The sun was out (it was warm), the relative humidity was low and the breezes were light making it a perfect day for such a ride. There was no rain today which made such a ride even better. From all appearances the weather was about the same here, at least that is what has been reported to me, and I pass it on.

A Good Start

There was a light ground fog this morning combined with a very heavy dew and the grass is very wet, as is anything else that was not under cover last night. With the temperature in the upper fifties and a 90% relative humidity it is rather clammy, but due to the temperature not totally uncomfortable. It looks like the weather is going to be good for the Lobster Ride in Rockland today, and that is where my bicycle and I are going as soon as chores are finished.

Sailors Take Warning

The promise of the red sky this morning came to fruition. At around 16:00 hours the skies opened up nd we had around 0.4 inches of rain from one cell that went through. Talk about a frog choker. Since then the temperature is down into the mid seventies and the humidity is down as well. The dog went and hid because the thunder was so loud. You can see the showers over Mt. Blue at around 15:30 hours. At least this will keep the dust down for a little while.

Red Sky at Dawn

After a delightful night for sleeping the sky at dawn was a beautiful red. There was also a very heavy dew. There are some clouds in the western sky, but right now the indications are for a decent morning. A red sky at dawning "sailors take warning" frequently is an old adage that portends rain or showers later in the day, but we will have to wait and see on that.

This is another typical summer day it is quite warm, with lots of sun and dry. With the breeze it is quite nice, except when a hornet's nest is disturbed, OUCH. Clear, Cool Night

There was a beautiful red sky this morning as the sun rose through some clouds in the east. The dew covered everything that was not already covered, the grass, the trees and the car. If the temperature tops 90 degrees again today we will have a heat wave, but with this mornings temperature that may be in doubt. We can only wait and see. With a temperature that is 6 degrees lower than it was yesterday and a relative humidity that is the same as it was yesterday it feels much less humid than it did. It is just as sticky this morning as it was yesterday. There were some showers around as was noted in yesterday afternoon's report, but that does not seem to have reduced the humidity at all. The weather has remained overcast, hot and humid all day. It is most uncomfortable. I took a hike up Mt. Blue today and as you can see from the picture we were at eye level with the clouds. It is very sticky this morning. There was no dew on the grass or vehicles, it is all in the atmosphere. There has been no rain overnight, but with the overcast as dark as it is and the fact that there is no dew on the grass, I would expect there to be some showers by noontime, but I could well be wrong. Sultry End

The clouds that were present this morning have continued to move in, thicken and lower. It has become more oppressive as the day has worn on. There has not been any rain yet, but it would be a surprise if we did not have any before the end of the evening. This is an air mass that has nearly tropical overtones. It is very reminiscent of time I spent in southern Louisiana. Right now a shower would be most welcome to dry the air out and cool things off a bit.

Humid

The temperature fell into the mid-sixties last night making it a delightful night for sleeping or reading Harry Potter or anything else. The sky is a bit hazy this morning with "Mares Tails and Mackerel Scales" over much of the canopy. It feels a bit more humid than it did yesterday although the dew point and relative humidity say it should feel less so. I am not sure why, and that is subjective on my part. Summer Afternoon

This has been a very good summer day. It has been warm, not too humid with some occasional light breezes and no precipitation. This is just the kind of day for everyone to enjoy what Maine has to offer. There are picnics to be had, festivals to attend and a myriad of other activities that one can be involved in from gardening to swimming either in a local lake or at the shore. The current heat index is 84.6 and the current dew point is 67.6 and that is just before 18:00 hours. This is the result of the change in temperature from the high of the afternoon.

There was no additional shower activity last evening, but there has been a change in the air mass. Although the starting temperature is the same as it was yesterday the air smells fresher and feels more comfortable. We had a bit of ground level fog, and very heavy dew on the grass this morning. At sunrise there was a red cast to the sky, so I guess the sailors will keep a weather eye to the sky today.

Steamy Finish

The promise of the morning has been fulfilled. Although it was warm this morning we did go from a period of overcast to a brief period of sun and clouds to an overcast sky. At around 14:30 this afternoon the showers began. We have already had about 0.2 inches of rain, and I would not be surprised to see more before the end of the evening. The promised cold front has not yet arrived and the weather in a word is steamy. In fact between showers I walked outside and the water vapor was rising off the road. Does it feel like 101 degrees? Yes, it does.

Bart and I took our morning walk across a dry lawn this morning. The temperature obviously did not reach the dew point. The sky is overcast and with a 73% relative humidity it feels oppressive. At this point the goats and sheep are probably going to be pleased to stay inside out of the weather that appears to be heading our way. Pretty Good So Far

This morning was delightful. It was a bit warm, but not so warm as to preclude outdoor activity. In fact two of us went for a 24-mile bicycle ride and it was good. Around 14:00 hours there were some clouds around, and the rumble of thunder could be heard. I let our sheep in so their fleece did not get wet, but it did not rain anyway. That does not mean that we are out of the woods, because there are still some clouds around and thundershowers can pup up at any time when it is as warm as it is now.

We frequently see these spiders in and around our garden. Because of the heavily spun area in the center we call them zig-zag spiders. They are a grass spider or garden spider and later in the season get quite large (as much as 2 inches total diameter). They also have a large yellow makings on their abdomen and the rest of the color is black. If you have any idea what their real name is please let us know. I have done a bit of searching on the web (pardon the pun) and I suspect it is the web of an immature Golden Orb Weaver.

Clear, Cool and Humid

This morning there was some dew on the grass, but it is not particularly heavy. While the sky is clear the sky at sunrise was pink, indicating some haze to our east. It is quite humid as the 75% relative humidity indicates. A word about Relative Humidity is probably in order considering the discussion of Heat Index from yesterday. The concept is that Relative Humidity is the measure of the percent of water vapor actually in the air when compared with the amount that the air at that temperature and atmospheric pressure can hold. This also has an effect on the dew point, which is that temperature where the air is saturated (100% Relative Humidity), and the water vapor condenses on the grass, our cars and any other items outside.

New Parameter-Heat Index

Everyone knows that when the weather gets warm the temperature frequently feels much warmer than the thermometer tells us it is. This difference between the observed temperature and the perceived temperature is known as the heat index. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has developed a complex formula to determine what that perceived number is. Basically the reason we feel that it is warmer is because of the difference in the evaporation of perspiration from our skin. The higher the humidity, the slower moisture evaporates from the skin making us feel warmer. This formula works down to about 70 degrees, and below that the numbers do not make sense. I have checked a couple of sites that will calculate the Heat Index when the relative humidity and temperature are provided. Below 70 degrees a message stating that it is too cool for a Heat Index is presented. Therefore if the temperature is below 70 in the morning a Heat Index will not be provided, but the Heat Index will be calculated for the high temperature and relative humidity for the day. The observation for today was that it was hot this afternoon under a blue sky and bright sunshine. There have been some clouds rolling in this afternoon, and at this point it is partly cloudy with the sun sinking into the clouds in the west. All in all a good day to accomplish some fence repair or other outdoor tasks. This was also a good day to start a vacation here in Maine if you are that fortunate.

Warm & Humid

A cloudbank in the east prevented us from seeing the sunrise, although there were some beautiful bands of red across the eastern sky. With temperatures in the mid-sixties and an elevated relative humidity it is definitely sticky this morning. The dew on the grass is not quite as heavy as it has been, but there was some. The winds are also calm which is making it feel a bit more oppressive. Welcome to the sauna of summer, hazy, hot and humid.

Summer Sunday

The clearing took significantly longer to complete than it appeared this morning. It was not until around 16:00 hours that it was done, but the late afternoon and early evening were beautiful. This did turn into a nice summer afternoon. This evening some clouds have rolled in, there are no stars and in the west thunder can be heard and the flash of lightening can be seen.

Summer Returns

Before the rain stopped early yesterday evening we had an additional tenth of an inch of precipitation. The dew overnight was very heavy due to the very high humidity, low temperature and lack of wind. This morning we are left with broken clouds, and patches of blue sky that appear to be growing. It seems that the skies will continue to clear leaving us with a return to summer weather

And the Rain Keeps Coming

Since the readings were taken this morning there has been an additional three quarters of an inch of precipitation. It has rained all day at a greater or lesser rate. This has indeed been a grey day with no possibility to get outside to weed or mow or accomplish anything in the gardens or on the lawn. Even fence repair on an electric fence would be a shocking experience.

Rain, It Must Be Saturday

The rain did come early yesterday evening, and it appears to have been gentle since we only had about a quarter of an inch. This morning it is still raining, and it appears that it will continue to do so. If you have any shopping to do, books to read or indoor projects to attack, this appears to be the day to do them.

Prelude to Rain

As this day has worn on the clouds have moved in to turn it from a mostly sunny morning to a grey, cloudy afternoon. It has not started to rain yet, but from the look of the sky, and the fact that the barometer has started to fall, it should not be very long before rain arrives. It may not be 24 hours, but I suspect it will be fairly close. If you know what the flowers are in the picture below, please let me know in the comments section. Thank you.

Heavy Dew

There was some patchy ground fog around this morning, and it was definitely cool with temperatures in the low fifties. With the relative humidity nearing 80% it is quite humid making everything stick to you. The dew was quite heavy, so if the lawn is going to be finished the sun needs to dry it off quickly.

Deeelightful

The relative humidity has remained low and with the breeze and cool temperatures it has been a delightful day. The "Mares Tails and Mackerel Scales" present in the sky are frequently an harbinger of rain within 24 hours. We shall see on that score. The other nice thing about the wind is that the insects usually can't light let alone bite, and that is good. Another indicator of Summer's arrival are the Day Lilies that we see along the roads like the ones pictured below.

Drying Out

This morning the temperature is higher at nearly 57 degrees than the relative humidity at 53%. The atmosphere seems to have dried out. The showers, which were the predominant feature of yesterday's weather, have dissipated, leaving in their wake clearing skies. The dew on the grass is quite heavy, and that results in having to wait a while before starting on lawns and gardens. It appears that this may well turn out to be a very pleasant day.

A Cloudy Finish

The temperature did not change very much from this morning's low reading, and with the cloud cover that is no surprise. We are dealing with a rising barometer, which should indicate some improvement in the weather for tomorrow. The clouds did produce a little more precipitation during the day, but it was not steady and was generally light. Our lawn has not shown any effects of the dry weather we had last week and it grows apace, requiring more frequent mowing than I have seen in several years. That certainly takes time away from working in the garden and on other tasks around the farm.

Showers to Start

Those clouds that worked their way into the area all day yesterday finally became productive around 20:00 hours last night. Mother Nature provided her own fireworks display and light show, and by 23:00 hours the thunderstorms had dissipated leaving us with light showers. Those light showers appear to be determined to hang on during the day today. Well, I heard one weather prognosticator say we need the rain. I am not sure where he has been living since the first of May, but we have already had over 14 inches of rain since the first of May. A shower to keep the dust down would probably be good, but I think (my opinion only) that the water table is up to normal levels. In fact if we have too much rain it will cause the tomatoes to split and make the Corn Smut (a fungus) be a problem. As with many things, a balance is necessary to have good crop production in our gardens. By the way, if you have not noticed, with an 88% relative humidity it is definitely "sticky" this morning.

Changes in Store?

The weather is mostly cloudy this morning with a very dull sun that has broken through the clouds, but after the last three days we do not have anything to complain about right now. The clouds appear to be moving in, so if anyone wants to get anything done they had best do it this morning. We will just have to wait to see what this afternoon brings and take our chances.

Glorious Independence Day

The sky this evening looks like someone took great handfuls of fireflies and threw them against a black velour sheet. It is absolutely amazing the number of stars that can be seen away from the light pollution of the cities. There is hardly a breath of wind stirring so the mosquitoes are a bit more active. The weather certainly has co-operated for the Independence Day celebrations. Three days in a row of virtually picture perfect weather. WOW!

A Glorious 4th

This morning there is a very light ground fog, but it appears to be burning off quickly. The temperature at 6:00 is in the low sixties, and it is extremely comfortable. There do not appear to be any clouds in the sky, so this may well be the third day in a row of exquisite weather. Who could ask for more on a holiday weekend? However you want to celebrate it, may you have a glorious Independence Day, the anniversary of the birth of our nation.

A Double

Can we say a gorgeous summer day? Yes, we can. This is one of the nicest and best days we have had since the start of spring. The relative humidity was down, the sky was clear, and the bright sun made everything look and feel great. One more day like this will make it the first three day weekend that I can remember this year or at least since I have started keeping these records where the weather has been so absolutely beautiful. This should help the gardens grow and even improve the attitude of the goats and sheep toward being outside and working on their pasture. If they did not we certainly needed this.

Clear, Cool and Dry

This is the first morning in a long while that I can remember seeing no clouds in the sky. The sunrise was absolutely beautiful. It was definitely a comfortable night for sleeping, and with temperatures in the mid-sixties this morning it just beckons us to be outside. If the weather had been like this last month my garden would already be producing vegetables. So far we have had no measurable rain this month.

Incredible Afternoon

Incredible!! This has been a picture perfect day. The most we had for clouds were some "fair weather clouds" early this afternoon, but they went away. The is a most incredible start to the Independence Day celebration. It was so nice this afternoon that I went fishing, and with the breeze I hardly saw any insects.

Gorgeous

This is a beautiful, clear, dry and refreshing morning. The clouds have left us and once the dew dries off the grass it will be an excellent day to get out in the garden, or mow the lawn or have a barbecue outside. With the breeze in place the insects will even be held at bay.

On Many of the days with either cloudy stars or finishes there were sunny periods during the day. There were clouds or rain all day on several of them.
I am not sure how this compares with previous years, since I do not have those records, but it certainly seems to have been a wet month with a reduced amount of sunshine. If anyone has the data from previous record years it would be nice to be able to review it.

Summer Morning

The weather overnight was warm, but not uncomfortable. Right at the end of the evening there were some light sprinkles, but not enough to measure. While it is not raining now (6:00) it certainly is threatening. The air is very still, and there is no wind stirring. The sky is heavily overcast, and it feels like we need a shower to clear the air.
