Showers, Windy and Humid

The barometric pressure has continued to fall over the day and is now lower than it has been all summer. Since this morning we have had another 0.65 inches of rain and by the look of it there may be more in store. The air is so humid that everything in the house from the wooden banisters to the furniture to papers waiting to be filed is damp to the touch.
The goats got to take another shower today, and it was quite comical to see Faith (one of the does) stop where she turned into the field, call her two kids, and wait until they caught up with her before heading out to browse. Just like any mother watching out for her children.
If the weathermen have it right we should be in for some nice weather tomorrow afternoon and right through the holiday weekend.

Raining

Well, it appears that they have gotten it right. It is raining, but not as heavily as it could be. As long as it continues to rain at a leisurely pace, like it is now, it won't be too bad. The sheep will stay in today because of their fleece, but the goats will get to go out, have a shower and free range on the field that they need to clear. Bart, my complaint manager, complained this morning about going for his walk. But he went, and now he smells like a wet dog. I do not believe that I will be getting a great deal of work done outside today.

Overcast and Humid

The rain tapered off this morning leaving us with the 1.25 inches that I reported earlier. It has continued to be overcast, warm and humid all day, but at least I was able to work outside during the afternoon when the grass dried off. From the descriptions I have seen on the news and the weather web sites we may be in for some more rain tomorrow as a result of the low pressure system that was Katrina..

Raining

Late last week I heard a weather prognosticator say that we were in the driest 10 days of the year. Well, I hope he has plenty of salt and pepper as a garnish when he eats those words. We have had over an inch and a quarter of rain in the last 24 hours, and it appears that we will get some more. In addition it is foggy this morning. The air feels heavy this morning as a result of the high humidity and tropical character.

Raining and very Sticky

It has rained and been very humid all day. This was not a good day to work outside, if that was what you wanted to do. So, it has been a day to begin planning next year's garden, and that has been accomplished. The goats were not enthusiastic about going out this morning, but they do have cover that they can get to, and did, so they could continue their work on the field.

Foggy, Warm and Humid

Even though there has been a minimal change in the Barometric Pressure there has been a definite change in the air mass. It has a much more tropical character than it had over the past several days. The grass was wet, probably as much from the fog as from any dew that formed, and I doubt the presence of any dew. We have not had any rain this morning, but once again the sky is threatening. If anyone has this week off as the last week of summer vacation then it would be a good one to be going to the stores to do some last minute shopping for the return to school. Traditionally this is the last week of "Summer" when considering the meteorology of the week. There may be a few more warm days in September, but there are already some leaves that are changing color due to the reduced amount of light. It has also been reported to me that there has been some frost in areas of northern Maine when we had those cool mornings earlier this month.

Overcast, Showery and Humid

The promise of earlier today certainly came to fruition. We had some showers this afternoon, heavy in places and at times, but still not a lot to show for it. I cannot get over the barometric pressure, it still has not moved despite the changes in the weather, and I have more than one. They are all very close and have remained steady. A more advanced weather person might be able to tell me why the changes in the atmosphere without a corresponding change in the barometric pressure.

Overcast, Warm and Humid

There has definitely been a change in the air mass overnight. The sky has become overcast and the feel is almost oppressive. There was a very heavy dew this morning as evidenced by the amount of moisture on everything that was not under cover.
It appears that our string of exceptionally nice weather is about to be broken. With the exception of the barometric pressure, that has remained steady, all of my indicators, the weather stick, the indicator on my indoor/outdoor thermometer and the overall feel of the atmosphere seem to say that we will be threatened with some inclement weather. More to come this afternoon.
We really need to remember these past several days in late January and February.
As you can see below the fenceline is being cleared by the goats and sheep, and they have quite the path all they way around the field. It is a real treat to see them march out single file to the place where they want to begin their day's labor.

Clear, Warm and Dry

Today turned out to be a clear, warm and dry day. Absolutely gorgeous is all I can say about it. I was outside all day and I loved every minute of it. I hope that everyone had the pleasure of being outside today either working or playing. It was just too beautiful a day to miss. The goats are definitely taking advantage of this weather too.

Ground Fog and Cool

Once again the ground fog was in evidence, and the visibility was restricted. It was a cool night, but quite comfortable. There was a heavy dew in combination with that ground fog, and Bart was very wet when he came in from our morning walk. Just a note, this is the first morning since last spring where I could see my breath as I walked, not a good omen.
Before sunrise I could hear an owl calling in the woods near my location, quite eerie.
The goats are doing a very good job of clearing the fence line in the lower field. There are some grapevines overhanging the fence and they do like them a lot.
It looks like we are in for another nice late summer/early fall day once the fog dissipates.

Foggy & Cool

There is a red sky this morning at sunrise with almost no clouds. The ground level fog is thick enough that there is only about 100 yards of visibility. There is also a significant dew on the grass and anything else that was not under cover last night It does appear that this will be another nice late summer/early fall day, and that is just my guess. I probably should stick with the old saw, "Red sky at dawning, sailors take warning."

Clear and Dry

Those breaks in the clouds this morning gave way to first a partly cloudy sky and then to a clear one. This turned out to be a delightful day to till the garden plot for next year since I did not get anything planted this year. I still have a few volunteers to harvest, but that is about it. Hopefully next spring will not in any way shape or form resemble this May and June for clouds and rain. We always seem to be at the mercy of the weather, and we will have weather, whether or not we want it.

Cloudy with Showers

Despite the overcast this has been a very pleasant day. It has not been too hot or humid, and there has been a fairly steady breeze. At this location there have been several light showers, probably on the fringe of some heavier ones, but no accumulation. That was noted when I went out to the store and saw that the streets were wet and there were also some puddles. Still they did not interfere with the cheese making that I was doing.

Cloudy and Humid Start

There was a brief shower yesterday evening after the data had been posted, but there was not enough precipitation to measure. This morning the sky is overcast, threatening a bit more sky juice. Partly Sunny and Warm

Once again the temperature approached 80 degrees, but did not quite make it. It has been very comfortable, to the point that this morning we went for a 24 mile bike ride, and it was delightful. I noticed that the grapes on my grape arbor are just starting to show a bit of color. Now, if I can keep the goats out of them I should get enough to make some grape jelly, and if I am lucky a small batch of red and a small batch of white wine. I am also hoping to get enough elderberries to make a batch of elderberry jelly which is excellent. As a farmer I am also making Feta and Cottage Cheese. This is an excellent activity for inclement weather, and is a good way to use up extra Goat Milk. As the saying goes, "Waste not, Want not."

Clear & Cool

There was a very heavy dew overnight, to the point where the windshield wipers needed to be turned on before leaving the driveway. It was also quite cool. The sun is quite bright, so the temperature should rebound very nicely, and with the low dew point it should remain very comfortable. I am beginning to see some leaves changing color, and I think we all know what that portends. I still think it is too early to be thinking in terms of the end of the warm weather, but Mother Nature will have her way, and there is nothing we can do about it.

The temperature approached 80 degrees again, but it did not feel that bad. As you note the heat index was only 81, so it did not appear to be that uncomfortable. There are still some clouds with us this morning, but the sun is out and the temperature is warming up. So much for the obvious. Some much needed and very gentle rain has arrived. We have received about 0.30 inches more precipitation overnight for a total of 0.4 inches in the past 24 hours. It is humid this morning and warmer than yesterday. This has definitely been a change in air masses. I would guess that the goats will be looking for cover out in their field today, and there is some where they can get out of the weather.

Filtered Sun & Humid

There was a bit of a surprise this morning because there was no dew on the grass and, as I surmised last evening, the showers here did not amount to anything. There seems to have been a significant change in the air mass, as it is now much more humid than it has been for the last few days. Obviously the cloud cover overnight had something to do with the temperature not falling as low overnight (it did not reach the dew point) and the relative humidity being low enough that the air did not become saturated with water vapor at which point it would have condensed on everything.

Earlier today it began to get a bit more humid and clouds to moved in. The goats however did follow me down to the far corner of their new field and began to work on the small poplar trees there. They have been working on the field, but they have a long way to go. This evening the temperature has not fallen very far, but the humidity has certainly crept up. There was also some rain beginning to fall very lightly. At this point there has not been enough to measure, and by morning there may be only a trace, but we shall have to see on that.

Cool and Overcast

It actually did not get as cool as it did the night before last, but not by much. Despite the cloud cover there was quite a bit of dew on the grass. The goats and sheep seem to like this weather since they have become more active as it has cooled down. They still have a tremendous amount to do to clean up the new field which has been put under fence. The weather has certainly been conducive for them to get the job done, but I may have to put the sickle bar mower on the field to get it opened up for them before snow flies. I will try to get some pictures of them laboring in the fields.

Overnight there was some fog and the grass was very wet when I took Bart for his morning walk. The sun was also out and shining through the fog, but since then the clouds have rolled in. With the current state of the atmosphere I am unwilling to speculate on the rest of the day. Right now it is not raining, and the wind is calm, so if you want to get something done outside I would say, ""Do it."" The clouds have pretty well dissipated, and it has turned out to be a very nice day. The temperature did not even reach 80 here, and the relative humidity was not too bad. Right now it is partly cloudy or rather looking toward the west it is mostly cloudy and looking toward the east it is mostly sunny. I therefore have split the difference and called it partly cloudy. This evening it has begun to rain. There has, as yet, been no measurable rainfall, but it appears that it will accumulate by morning. There were periods today when, just sitting, I dripped, and other times when it was quite comfortable. The air mass changed that fast. Right now the temperature has fallen into the sixties, but it is still quite humid. It is going to take some time for the air mass to settle down and become stable.

At some time during the night there was a shower, which produced about 0.10 inches of rain. The sky was cloudy when I first looked out at 07:00, but it is gradually clearing now at almost 09:00. None of my indicators seem to have a good grasp on what the day will bring. Last night around 20:00 hours there was a shower that produced about 0.1 inches of rain. It was a gentle shower so it should have soaked in rather than running off. Overcast & Threatening

There have been no showers today, but there have been mackerel scales and mares tails throughout the day. Since about 16:00 hours the sky has become overcast and threatening showers. It has been a warm, but not oppressive today. It has been a good one to get some things done, like mowing the lawn or working in the garden.

Mostly Cloudy Start

The dew point is back down in the forties which made it quite nice for sleeping last evening. There was much less dew on the grass than there has been lately. Right now it is a bit humid but not uncomfortable. As long as it does not rain during the day it should be a good day to get some tasks done outside. If it does rain there is plenty to do inside,

Hot & Humid, but Breezy

A breeze has sprung up this afternoon, so although it does feel quite warm and a bit sticky it is not all bad. There are a few clouds around, but nothing seems to be building into a shower or storm. It was nice enough that I was able to go for a short bicycle ride after lunch. All in all it has been a very nice day.

Showery Start

This morning started with a shower at about 06:15 yielding about 0.1 inches of precipitation. Overnight there was no rain, and because of the shower this morning it is not possible to determine if there was dew or not. Even after the shower it is still quite humid and with a dew point in the mid fifties the point is proven that it is uncomfortable. The shower has ended for now, but the sky is still threatening.

Hazy, Hot and Humid

With the heat index up to 96.5 and the dew point at 72.3 it is definitely uncomfortable. I took a hike up Bald Mountain again and it was not nearly as comfortable as it was the last time, and the haze was just as bad. One of these days when we do this it will be clear enough to get some nice photographs. At this point in time a cool shower and some more fluids are certainly in order.

Warm, Clear and Humid

Overnight there were no showers or rain here, but the dew and ground fog certainly left everything wet. It appears that we will have another summer day complete with the hazy, hot and humid conditions. Just as it has been the past few days, taking it easy with frequent breaks and plenty of fluid is definitely in order. Just think, it is only another 8 weeks to the average date for the first frost, and sometimes it is even earlier than that.

Sunny, Hot and Humid

As hot as it has been, it has still been possible to be active outside. Frequent breaks and plenty of fluid have been the rule. If you have the availability of a lake, then this would be an ideal day to go for a swim.
Just a note, the slitherbeasts are out, about and active. Apparently there is plenty of food for them such as insects and small mammals. Though they are not usually welcome as pets, they do a great deal of good in controllong some pests and vermin.
The goats and sheep are enjoying the field that has been opened up for them.
When I was younger and we saw light rays, as in the photo below, we used to say that the sun was drawing water in preparation for a shower. If thare are any overinght I will report them in the morning.

Warm, Humid Start

Overnight some clouds rolled in and, it was a bit warm making it less comfortable for sleeping. The combination of ground fog and dew left everything very wet this morning. At least the lawn has slowed down a little bit, but with the dry weather the second crop of hay is being stunted. A couple of days of gentle rain would help that a lot. Today with the heat and humidity, that appear to be building, it would be a good idea to drink plenty of fluid and take frequent breaks to avoid heat related problems.

Summer Afternoon

Although it has been quite warm it has been a good day for outdoor activities. While the dew point and heat index are elevated it still was not terribly uncomfortable. Taking time to drink plenty of fluid and take frequent breaks made even strenuous work bearable. I try to remember to drink before I am thirsty, eat before I am hungry and rest before I am tired.

A real Nice Start

The sky this morning is clear, and with temperatures in the mid fifties rather nice. The dew on the grass and cars is quite heavy, but that will clear quickly. The breeze is calm and the dew point is in the upper forties. This should be a pretty good day for any activity outside.

A Fine Finish to the Weekend

The MS 150 Bike Ride went off with perfect weather and the Maine Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society should be quite pleased with the results. Everyone had a good time and it was an excellent ride. The heat is creeping back into the weather. The humidity has also crept up with the dew point now approaching 70. It seems that we may be in for another spell of hazy, hot and humid weather.

August 6, 2005 Morning

This morning began with a comfortable temperature and humidity. A slight breeze early this morning made it very comfortable. It is a good day to work inside or outside, with the lower humidity thanks to the cool front that passed through last night. Thunderstorms were in the area but we only had a sprinkle. What a wonderful weekend for the Wilton Blueberry Festival!

The afternoon showed a brief shower here, but it was reported that in the Augusta area there were some heavy thunderstorms during the afternoon. The wind had changed direction and the humidity was falling, or at least it felt like it was.

Cool and Overcast

The sky is overcast this morning and threatening rain. If it does rain it should usher in a fresh air mass with some drier air that would also be a bit cooler. The dew on the grass this morning was non-existent since the dew point was almost 10 degrees below the low temperature. At 78% relative humidity it is humid, but not uncomfortable at this point. As it warms up this morning it will probably become oppressive. There has been a shower since 05;30, and the stormclouds have gathered. Based on all the parameters I would expect some more showers over the day.

A "9.7" Day

Today has been a day to make hay while the sun shines. It has been warm and dry with some clouds rolling in during the afternoon. One of my neighbors is actually making hay today, and, at the risk of repeating myself, it is a great day to make hay while the sun shines. These are the kinds of days that we as farmers need in order to put feed by for our animals for the winter. It is very definitely a weather dependent task.

Foggy, Foggy Dew

Temperature is certainly a subjective parameter, and what feels cool to one person feels warm to another. Today is probably a prime example, but with the dew point in the mid forties it is quite comfortable. The dampness caused by the fog probably makes it feel a little cooler than it really is, but that is all right. Everything that was not under cover of trees or garages is certainly wet with dew, and my complaint manager, Bart, came in looking like he had been swimming and just shaken himself off. He is not complaining though. It will be a little while before it will be possible to get outside on the mower to do a decent job on the lawn. The goats and sheep still have a great deal of work to do on the lower field, and I am not sure that they are going to get it all cleared by the time snow flies. With weather like this though they should get a good start on it. I noticed that the Phlox that I pictured a few days ago has really burst into full bloom and for comparison have pictured it below.

No Complaints Today

This one can go in the books as a really nice day. The sky has remained clear, the breezes light and the humidity low after this morning's ground fog. I hope that everyone got outside to enjoy this one. If there are any complaints about weather like today they can be brought to the attention of "Bart" who will listen with a sympathetic ear.

Foggy Sunrise

The thunder storms yesterday evening, around 22;00 hours, produced another quarter of an inch of rain and a pretty spectacular light show. There is some heavy ground fog around this morning and the showers overnight have cooled things off quite a bit. With the dew point at 50.5 and the temperature at 56.9 it is still quite humid, but not uncomfortable. Above the fog it does appear to be clear. I am looking forward to a good day to work outside, and maybe go for a short bicycle ride this afternoon

Thunder This Afternoon

Around 14:30 this afternoon the thunder and lightning started and with it a pretty good thundershower. It provided us with around a quarter of an inch of rain along with a few strokes of lightning followed by the prerequisite thunder. The photo shows Wilson Lake in downtown Wilton after the storm was over. The temperature dropped from the high of 86.2 to about 72 over the hour of the storm. Even so it is still quite humid as the dew point indicates. I should mention that last night there was some lightning around, but it did not provide us with any precipitation. There are also some storms still around the area, but none appear to be headed in our direction at the moment.

Warm and Sticky

There was a brief shower this afternoon as I finished my electric fence. There was not enough rain to measure, so we will call it a trace. It has been warm this afternoon, and by the time I finished my outdoor task I was absolutely soaked, so the heat index was correct as was the dew point. It was Hot and sticky. We did not have the showers that were predicted, so we can chalk this one up as a "not too bad" day.

July Statistics

Overall this month has been much clearer and warmer than May or June. There has been some rain, but I do not know what the normal rainhfall for July is. I have tried some sources, and could not get that information at this time. I will update this entry when I get the information. Thanks to The Weather Channel the average precipitation for July is 3.88 inches, so we are about an inch behind. Based on what we had in May and June, I doubt that we have a water problem at this time.
For the month of July the statistics are as follows:
Average Low Temperature: 58.8
Average High Temperature: 82.3
Overall Average: 70.5
High Low Temperature: 72.6
Low Low Temperature: 51.8
High High Temperature: 91.8
Low High Temperature: 61.2

Overcast Start to Week

After the absolutely beautiful weather of the last several days we really should not complain about one that is cloudy and shows the potential for some rain. They sky is overcast and there was some dew on the grass, but less than I would have expected. There is virtually no wind and it is cool and humid. It is almost as if it is waiting for something to happen in the atmosphere
