Very Warm For October 31st
Watch out for the ghouls and goblins tonight.
Perhaps the red sky this morning was not a mistake. The clouds have been rolling in all day, and right now it is mostly cloudy.
For this time of year it is very, very warm. I would guess that this is our Indian Summer, after all it is the first warm spell after the killing frost.

Warm for Halloween
Happy Halloween!
This is interesting, the weather has turned warm just in time for the children to go out "Trick or Treating". This is the first time in several years that I can remember that it will not be frosty on Halloween.
There will be some things done today and probably tomorrow that will get the yard ready for the onset of "snow season". There was no dew this morning let alone frost.
There is a pink sky to the east, though with the way things have gone the past several months I am not quite sure what that means in terms of our weather. I have seen this go both ways, after a red sky the weather was great and at other times the clouds would roll in and the weather would be most inclement. We will just have to wait and see on this one.

Surprisingly Warm
There has only been an 8 degree drop in temperature this afternoon. No doubt this is unusual for this time of year. I can remember the children going out for Halloween with cold weather clothing under their costumes. If the prognosticators are to be believed there will be warm temperatures tomorrow for the festivities and it is supposed to be dry as well.
The ground and lawn have dried out enough that I think that I will be able to prepare the ground for spring in the garden, and get the lawn mown for the last time this year, as well as swept. That will get the leaves off so they do not kill the lawn next spring. I can use the grass and leaf mulch as part of my mulch in the garden for weed control. I use only natural fertilizer and natural weed control. That makes things a bit more difficult, but more healthy.

Warming Trend
After lows in the mid-twenties overnight the temperature is rising quickly. It is already (08:45) almost 42, which is what I used for the Wind Chill and Dew Point Calculations. It is very bright outside, and that bodes well for getting out to finish preparations for our next season.
Yesterday the sheep and goats remained confined to their upper pasture and seemed to be quite pleased to be so. It is only when they become bored with their browse that they begin to become escape artists and look for more interesting feed.
I noticed also that the leaves are for the most part gone. Once the lawn dries out a little more, and the garden dries out so I will not be walking in oatmeal there I can finish the preparations for spring. I am going to plant my garlic and at least 2 varieties of peas before the ground is frozen, if at all possible.

Cooling Off Quickly
We have had a very nice day for one that was supposed to be snowy. The skies were clear or at the worst mostly sunny all day and into the evening. The stars are shining, and it is quite nice out. I have to wonder how this is explained by the prognosticators. My spouse and I were taken out for a birthday dinner this evening (my spouses birthday) and with the nice weather we had a very nice time. I hope that everyone had a good day today and got to enjoy this delightful weather

Frosty and Clear
With all the overcast yesterday afternoon this morning has dawned clear and bright. It was cold (22.1 degrees) and has warmed up to 28.1 already (09:00). The animals stayed out of trouble yesterday since they got into some new browse. When they get bored they get into trouble. Gee, that sounds familiar. They will get to go out to the "new" area again today. The pasture they have been working on is pictured below, and if it is compared with what they started with they have done a magnificent job of reclamation. (I found the comparison and it is pictured below the current situation)
The gardens (except those in greenhouses) are now history. 22.1 degrees is just to low for any garden plants to survive outside. Garlic and peas probably need to be planted very soon if we are going to have an early crop next year. We need a couple of dry and not very cold days in order to accomplish that since the garden needs a final tilling and preparation to receive the seeds and garlic cloves.

Little Change
There has only been about an 8 degree change in temperature today. The sun almost made it out this afternoon, because I saw some patches of blue sky. It is just that the sun was not where the blue sky was. I found out why the animals were bored and getting into trouble yesterday afternoon. They have done quite a job on the field where I set them to labor. The only thing left are the empty stalks from the goldenrod. It is now possible to see all the wood that was cut to set the fence line, and if that gets hauled up it will go a long way to making things clearer for the animals to get to the field in the spring when the hay is up enough for them to feed on it. I have one more section of pasture to get to so I can really keep the animals in fresh browse for the 6 to 9 months that they can get to it without being chest deep in snow.
I have heard the S word today in reference to the weather headed our way. Well, as I have noted before and was told to me some years ago, any time after the 15th of October we can have snow, and I have seen us lose the ground on October 13th, and not gotten it back until the10th of May. That was a long winter in anybody's book.

Clouds Still Present
The temperature here did not drop below freezing last night (at least so far), probably due to the presence of the overcast. As we head into the Halloween weekend it certainly looks fairly ominous. The barometric pressure is quite high (almost 30 in. Hg) which usually indicates fair weather and even my weather stick is straight which at least indicates that we are not headed into any inclement weather. I am not sure I believe that last since almost every morning it is pointed down, indicative of inclement weather on the way. I have a suspicion that dew and relative humidity have a significant effect on the weather stick, and I guess that can be a weather indicator, sort of. I have had some reports from people around the area that they either had no snow on Tuesday or they had 1-2 inches of snow. We fell into the latter category. In fact we still have some snow in little patches on the lawn and pasture.

Clouds Thickening and Lowering
I misspoke this morning because there was a skin of ice on the puddles in the driveway. The key to that was the fact that someone rolled their vehicle just down the hill from me. They hit a patch of ice and over it went. It did warm up fairly quickly, and the ice on the puddles did melt. The animals did enjoy their time outdoors and even got into some trouble by getting out of their electric fence. I think it is time for them to start working on another area of their browse, so I will shut this field down for now. While there was sun for much of the day this afternoon the clouds have rolled in and are beginning to threaten.

Frosty
The ice has yet to form on the puddles left over from Tuesday's rain, but there was definitely frost on the vehicles. Because of the snow it was difficult to tell if there was any frost on the grass that had been revealed when the sun came out for its brief visit yesterday afternoon. There were plenty of clouds around this morning but there were some stars visible as was the moon. Yesterday, with intermittent showers I kept the sheep and goats inside, but this morning with the potential of at least no rain they will get to go out.

Some Breaks of Sum
The sun did come out for a few minutes this afternoon. That resulted in much of the snow on my front lawn melting. There is still a pretty good sized puddle on the west side of my house which is an indicator of how wet the ground is. It seems to be getting colder more quickly this evening because there is no blanket of clouds to hold in whatever heat might be around. If things don't dry out a good bit the last mowing of the lawn and some of the other tasks that need to be done before we lose the ground completely will wait until spring, and some of them really can't. Once again the weather interferes with what "man" needs to do. Mother Nature will have her way no matter what "man" needs.

Overcast, Raw and Blustery
The wind is out of the north this morning and at 32 degrees it is feeling quite cool. The edges of the road are still coated with a mix of snow and slush. My front yard is coated with a little more than an inch of snow. It has stopped for the moment, so the animals will be permitted to get outside to exercise and find what they can in the field. It will not be long before they will be getting hay outside rather than trying to forage. At the moment I see no breaks in the overcast sky, therefore I expect today to be only a little less dismal than yesterday, only because it is not raining and snowing. By the way the peppers are history, there was no saving them from the snow

Dismal With Rain and Snow
I have now taken the rain gauge in. There was 1.2 inches of rain in the gauge and about 2 inches of snow in the top of it. The frozen precipitation started to fall at about noon, just as I got home from downtown Farmington. There have been cars slipping and sliding on route 133 all afternoon. I was surprised to find that the snow was sticking to the roads as well as the grass. This is a heavy, wet, sticky snow and it is making a mess. The current temperature is 32.2 degrees, so I would expect it to continue to fall overnight, and the accumulation of snow to continue. The prognosticators say it is going to warm up into the fifties over the weekend, but I would not like to have to stake my reputation on that.
My animals did stay in where it was dry, and they had plenty of hay to munch on. I will shortly go out and feed and milk the goats and feed sheep their grain and probably give them a bit more hay for the overnight. They will probably stay in again tomorrow, since we may well see some more of the same type of weather we have seen today

Dismal with rain
Currently the drizzle that we had yesterday evening has become a full fledged rain event. Once again, if you have anything that you can do inside I would opt for that. I know there are things that need to be picked up in the yard, the lawn needs its last mowing, and the leaves need to be picked up, but in order to do those things the air needs to be a little drier than it is right now. I understand from our friends the prognosticators that this is a record breaking October for rain. All I know is that the swamp at the foot of my hill is nearly full, so the wells are too. In one way this is a good way to go into winter with our wells fully charged.

Drizzle and Dismal
Today has been one of those days to knit, cane chars, read books or any other inside activity. I listened to the prognosticators who said it was going to be a nice day, and I let the animals outside. They did not particularly mind it, but they got wet. They will stay in tomorrow though. There is not much else to say about today except that there has not been a great shift in temperature. Oh well, snow is just around the corner.

Overnight we only had another 0.1 inches of rain. It is still overcast and there is a very light drizzle falling. It almost looks like snow, but at a current temperature of almost 39 degrees I don't think it is. The grass was very wet this morning, but I think that was more from the rain and drizzle than from any dew. I am not sure what kind of day this will be, so we will just have to look this afternoon to see what Mother Nature has in store for us.

Rain and Cool
The rain has continued all day and now into the evening. The ground is definitely saturated, and I am not sure how much more it can hold, if any. I know that the gravel floor in my basement is wet, but there is no standing water. I am, fortunately, on the top of a hill. The swamp at the bottom of the hill is quite full and getting fuller. I remember last year going into the winter it was only about 3 feet from the road, and it looks like it is heading that way again. With all the rain and plenty of water already in the ground there is a real potential for low lying areas to experience some flooding. Just as we had a very wet spring we are approaching a very wet autumn. As always all we can do is watch the weather, because there is absolutely nothing we can actually do

Well, I blew that one! We are right now in the middle of a low pressure system with some heavy rain and cool temperatures. At least we could enjoy one of the two weekend days. Cool
The temperature never got above 51 degrees today. I checked my peppers, and aside from a little damage at the top where the sheets were touching the plants they have survived. We will see what transpires over the next couple of days. They may get to go a little longer, and they may not. My house was cool today and so was I until I took Bart for a walk. That got the blood going and warmed me up considerably. It is difficult to find things to say about the weather right now. We are supposed to have some rain again this weekend, but from the weather maps I looked at it does not look like it will quite make it up here, so overcast and cool seems to be the order of the day.

Well, as I predicted (and so did the prognosticators) we have now had our killing frost (black frost, freeze). The next warm spell will be our Indian Summer, however short that will be. If you have not harvested it, with the exception of some of the winter squashes, parsnips, and maybe the pumpkins it is now history. As I recall when the winter squashes and pumpkins get touched by a frost they will last longer into the winter, but they need to be kept in a cool place for storage.

Approaching Cold 10/21 (PM)
I did not get the afternoon report into the computer, but I did have the data, so for those who are interested here goes. The wind did pick up during the day, but again died off as dusk approached. The sky was clear and star studded as the evening started. By the time I took the data the temperature had already fallen to 35.1 from its high of 50.4. This was a brisk day for sure. My bet is that if you have any portions of your garden left that this will be the swan song. We can all start again along around April or May of next year. There are 2 exceptions. The first is garlic which can be planted any time now for harvest next summer. The second are peas which I have planted around this time and had excellent success with an early crop, and then been able to plant a second time after the first crop is done and gotten an even bigger second crop. Good Luck with that.

Frosty
Despite the temperature being above freezing (by 0.2 degrees) we have now had our first frost. Cars, plants and grass all have a coating of what looks like sparkling diamonds. I did cover the peppers last night after the wind died down, and they are probably all right, but I won't know for sure until later. This, like every year, was inevitable.. The prognosticators are predicting additional frosts for the next couple of nights, so the covers are going to need to be kept close at hand. I fear that before this series is over we will have the killing frost or freeze where no amount of cover will save the plants and the growing season will be over. Next year will be a better year, we hope. I guess what we need will be more April showers to allow the ground to dry out in May so the planting can be done by Memorial day. Pardon my rank opinion, but I can hope can't I?

Breezy and Cool
If the breeze keeps up the frost will not have the chance to settle. Usually, however, as dusk closes in on us the breeze decreases in intensity allowing for radiational cooling to occur and frost to form. I have picked my peppers and covered the plants with sheets so the plants are prepared for a light frost. If the temperature dips into the mid twenties though they are history. Peppers are tender and the only way for them to survive is to put up some sort of hoop house with plastic covering. That is a possibility for next year. In this area we are about 5 weeks beyond our average first frost date of September 15th.

Getting Cooler
The combination of the wind and the overcast has kept the frost at bay for one more night. The way it looks right now we will not escape tonight. The prognosticators are saying that it will clear later today, and again the combination of the clouds most of the day and clearing in the afternoon will allow for temperatures to be held down during the day and radiational cooling overnight permitting frost to form. Say goodbye to your gardens until next year.
I should also note that there was no dew on the grass this morning, so Bart stayed dry during his morning constitutional.

I went for a walk with Bart this morning, and when I started the sky was partly cloudy with mostly Mare's Tails and Mackerel Scales. By the time I got home a little over an hour later the sky was overcast. It was also cool and humid. Nonetheless it was an enjoyable walk. The clouds have thickened all afternoon, and there is certainly a threat of rain in our future. The goats and sheep have still enjoyed being out today working the lower field. Once the golden rod stalks have been felled we will see that they have done a pretty good job of reclaiming that field for pasture.

The dew on the grass is not as heavy as I have seen it, but despite the wind there is quite a bit. Speaking of the wind it is quite noticeable so hold onto your hat this morning. It is quite refreshing though.
Since we are almost 6 weeks beyond our average first frost date I have been listening to the weather prognosticators. Their prediction is for a frost on Thursday night and a widespread freeze on Saturday night. That being the case I am going to harvest the peppers I have today and Thursday and possibly cover and spray them with a mist on Saturday in order to try to extend the season for perhaps one more week. Remember Indian Summer is the first warm spell after the first killing frost. My bet is on Saturday night for that event.

I took a walk with Bart around noon and just as I got back to the house it started to rain. The rain has fallen lightly for the rest of the afternoon, but there has not been enough to measure. Perhaps by morning we can see more than a trace. About all it did was get the grass wet enough so that the precipitation showed up on my shoes. I am not sure what happened, but the prognosticators were saying a dry week with a chance of showers today and tomorrow. What I saw coming off my roof was not "light", but it did not last long enough to show up in the rain gauge.

Gentle Breeze and no Dew
The grass this morning was dry since there was no rain, fog or dew. This is probably the result of having some wind overnight that did not allow the dew to condense on anything. The clouds across the face of the moon gave it the appearance of being fuzzy. Yest4erday afternoon much of the cloudiness was of the Mare's Tails and Mackerel Scales variety which seem to indicate some rain within 24 hours. The temperature is still hanging around the mid-forties with no apparent inclination to change either up or down. That being the case we are now living on borrowed time with regard to frost. The breeze has in the main been variable, but fairly strong. There have been periods of sun mixed in with mostly cloudy skies. The barometer has reached 29 in. of Hg after 3 days, so I would guess the low pressure system is beginning to move, and that is probably one reason for the strong winds today. The grass is not wet today, but the ground certainly is. It is a good thing that the rain has stopped to give the ground a chance to dry out a little bit.

It has stopped raining for now. The clouds are moving rapidly over the face of the full moon. It really is a nice morning. There is almost no dew on the grass as a result of the wind out of the Northwest and it is a little cool, but still too warm to register a wind chill. That is coming though. Well, overnight we had something different, Rain. Not only that, but the barometer dropped to a new low since May of 28.44 in. of Hg. Would you believe Rain?
Oh my, we have had about 4 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. It still has not let up. Just going out to check my rain gauge I got pretty well soaked, and I was only out for a few minutes. You will also note that the barometer has fallen into the basement. The barometric pressure is lower now than it was for either of the remnants of Katrina or Rita. We have definitely had a change in the air mass that is over us. If you are feeling tired or depressed it just might be the result of the low barometric pressure. I have heard that it can be a factor in how we feel.

Finally Rain
The rain that started yesterday evening obviously got heavy at times since we have had an inch and a half overnight. It is still raining, and is not showing any signs of letting up. I was going to take a walk with Bart this morning, but I think I will put that on hold until the rain lets up this afternoon or tomorrow. It appears that we are going to have a weekend like last weekend again. For those who work out of the house this is not just dismal it is downright depressing. You plan all week to get things done outside, and the weekend arrives along with the rain and uncooperative weather.

Rain is Threatening
All day today the rain has threatened. There have been periods of drizzle, some of fog. There has not been enough though to measure. Right up until mid-afternoon the road was dry, except for the edges. Finally after 18:00 hours it did begin to rain. I will get the measurement tomorrow morning. This has been a strange day in terms of the weather. It has not been cold, but it has not been comfortably warm either. Dismal is about the only description that fits a day like this.

Starting to Rain Again
As I took Bart out for his morning constitutional it was just starting to rain. There had not been any accumulation of precipitation, but I am sure there will be. With all the overcast we have had for the last 24 hours I am surprised that the barometer has been over 30 in. Hg. I would have expected it to be much lower. Further, I would have expected there to be some wind this morning, but again there is not. I guess that as this storm winds up we will see more wind and a lower barometer.

Overcast and Raw
The temperature rose a little more than 15 degrees today and with the humidity and overcast it has been a dismal raw day. Even though there has been very little wind it has felt much colder than the high of 54.8 or the current 52.2. The walk this morning was nice. Obviously with the cool weather it was necessary to layer a bit with the clothing. With great remorse I have raised the temperature in the house to 60 degrees just to take the dampness out of the air and the edge off the chill.
I do not know about anyone else, but we still have not had a frost here, but I would not expect that to last much longer. This will also be the last of the photographs of the two areas that I have been following. As you can see most of the leaves are down, and the ones that are left are not very brightly colored. Well, maybe next year they will be better.

Overcast and getting Cooler
There was a very heavy dew this morning leaving a coating of moisture on everything that is not under cover. By the time I took the readings the temperature was already up to 42.3, so there is some warmer air moving into the region under the blanket of clouds. Bart and I will get in another 4 mile walk this morning before I get to work around here. I am going to need to mow the lawn once more before the end of the season, and this time it will need to be swept to get the leaves up, since most of them are now on the ground. So much for the great fall foliage around here, it just did not happen. What color there was was muted, and the leaves fell before they could develop their color completely.

Cooling
During the day we have had varying amounts of sun and clouds. Mostly we have had filtered sun, but it has been bright. Bart and I did take that 4 mile walk, and it was quite invigorating. A pair of gloves did feel good this morning in the low to mid fifties. At least things are beginning to dry out after the weekend rains.

Clear and Cool
So far this looks like the pick of the week. We have had a very heavy dew, so everything not under cover is quite wet. Bart was in a hurry this morning, so we got in very quickly. The poor boy did not like getting wet cold feet. It should be an invigorating day for a walk. Then there are a few more things that need doing to prepare for the winter.

Overnight Showers
Once again we had some rain overnight that accumulated about another tenth of an inch of precipitation. Right now it is overcast, but it is not raining. If we get a bit of clear weather later I will put in pictures of the two areas I have been following this season. Unfortunately most of those leaves are already down. Even the leaves on the Maples in my small stand are gone. I for one am very disappointed in the colors this year. I have seen a tree here and there that has been bright, but they are the exception not the rule. That makes me a little sad, because I look forward to the brilliant colors of the fall foliage.

Right now the road outside my home is dry, but who knows what is next. It has been overcast all day, and quite humid as well. The winds have been basically variable, and not very strong; There just is not very much to say about a day like today. We had another tenth of an inch of rain, so the ground is pretty well saturated. The bog at the foot of the hill is filling up, and that is good because it is helping to charge our wells for the upcoming season. Tomorrow is another day.

And it is still Raining
Yes, so far the weekend is a washout. It is still raining, but not as heavily as it was yesterday and overnight. It is also somewhat warmer than it was yesterday. Look for better days ahead, I don't know when, but look for better days ahead. Just think if the rain we have had were snow at about 10 inches per inch of precipitation, that would have been 57 and a half inches of snow. Well, we can be thankful for small favors. Oh, so far this weekend we still have not had a frost or hard freeze. I would guess that with the overcast and rain it may yet be a little while before that happens.

Raining Still It Is
It appears that our low temperature will be this morning, since it is rising now, at 08:30. It is still raining, and has been since last night with an additional accumulation of around 2.1 inches. It had better slow down soon or it will exceed the capacity of my rain gauge. Indoor activities are once again the order of the day. This is not really the weather to go leaf peeping, since most of the leaves that have changed color will be on the ground.

I hope everyone has some indoor activities planned, because outdoors does not seem to be viable today.

Overcast, Humid and Warm
The clouds have been rolling in all day after the fog dissipated. There was no wind early this morning, but that has changed over the day and the winds became variable in directions and speed from 5 to 15 m.p.h. There was one brief shower a few miles from here that I drove through, and that was in Jay. So far we have had nothing here, but I suspect from the look of the sky, the weather stick and the "feel" of the air we will not be dry for much longer. I have some indoor activities for tomorrow, so I won't be left with nothing to do.

Fog not as thick
It is foggy this morning, but it is not as thick as it was yesterday. The sky above the fog appears to be cloudier than it has been earlier in the week. The grass is quite wet, but I suspect that is more from the fog than any dew that might have condensed overnight. It is still quite warm for this time of year. Fryeburg Fair ends this weekend and, if what I have heard is true, it will do so in usual fashion, with a significant storm. I have heard predictions of as much as 3 inches of rain over the next couple of days, and significantly cooler temperatures. Well, we shall see what we shall see.

Fog-bank visible
Looking toward the west the fog-bank which has hung around all day is visible. This did not turn out to be as pretty a day as I thought it would. The fog did not burn off, and it does not look like it will by evening. So, I would guess that the fog will be rolling right back in here as evening falls. That being the case, if you need to be on the road tonight be careful. The temperature only rose by about 10 degrees and it was humid making it feel significantly cooler than it actually was.

It is foggy again this morning. Like yesterday the fog is so thick that it is not possible to see the sky above the fog. This does put down a layer of moisture on everything, but it is not possible to measure it. It is still warm with temperatures in the mid-fifties here. Once the fog burns off, just like the last few days, it should be another good one. I am still trying to get the outside preparations done before the hammer falls, and it is no longer possible to get it done. Do any of us get everything done before the onslaught of winter?

The fog this morning again took until around 11:00 hours to burn off. After it was gone the sky was clear, the winds were very light and the temperatures were warm. All in all another very nice day. When Bart and I took our walk the temperatures were in the low sixties, but moving along it was comfortable.

Pea Soup
Once again this morning we have a fog that is so thick that it is not possible to see the sky above it to determine the conditions. This fog should burn off much as the one did yesterday between 10:00 and 11:00 hours. Before it will be possible to get outside and get anything done it will need to dry off a bit. I will get some things done in the barn after the chores are done and Bart and I take our walk. If it works out like yesterday we should have another good day for early Autumn. I did hear one of the prognosticators this morning, and if you have anything left in your garden you probably want to get it harvested before the end of this weekend, because it appears that we will have our first hard freeze Sunday night (if he was right).

Talk about pea soup fog, well we have one. If you have to be out on the road this morning use the fog lights and take your time. This appears to be one of the heaviest I have seen in quite a while. That said, once this burns off and the grass dries it should be another pretty good day, but this will take a while to burn off. Gorgeous, Beautiful and Delightful
How do you describe a stretch of weather that is so nearly perfect? These past few days have been exactly that. Yes, there has been some fog in the morning, and the grass might be wet, but once the fog burns off and the grass dries it has been fantastic. The breezes have been light; there have been no black flies and very few mosquitoes. All in all these have been picture perfect days. The only problem I have seen is that the colors have not been as vivid as they would be expected to be. That is painfully obvious in the two areas I have been following this season. Both of those areas usually are very colorful at this time of year. Even from the top of the hill close to here, where there usually is a colorful panorama looking toward Mt. Blue, the colors have yet to appear. If they ever do I will take a photograph of that area.

Foggy but Comfortable
This morning we are faced with a foggy, foggy dew. Bart was almost as wet as if he had been given a bath. If it wasn't under cover it was wet, even the east facing door on the carriage house was wet. This should prove to be another nice day though. It should give people a chance to get to the last fair of the season in Fryeburg. I have heard some prognosticators say that the end of the week may be unsettled, and that is not unusual for the end of the Fryeburg Fair. Right now though the winds are calm and the sky above the fog appears to be clear. It is not yet sunrise, so I may need to adjust the low temperature later, if it does go down further.

Sunny, Warm and Calm
The mare's tails and mackerel scales dissipated fairly early this morning, leaving just a few high thin cirrus clouds through the rest of the afternoon. It really was a great day to get outside and be active. Bart and I took a one hour walk, and it was delightful. I also spent some time cleaning up some odds and ends in the barn and moved more material out to the raspberries. They are almost finished. I still have the asparagus to finish and the lawn to mow before things close in on me. With weather like this, though, that should not be a problem. If the weather holds I will include photographs of the two areas that I have been monitoring for color in tomorrow afternoon's report.

The sky at sunrise this morning was red, and the dew was very heavy. The sky, while not fully overcast does have a large number of mare's tails and mackerel scales. If I had to guess I would say that we were going to have a spot of rain sometime in the next 24 hours, but I don't have to guess. The animals have done a pretty good job on the lower field, with the exception of the golden rod stalks, and they are even working on those. By next spring they should have reclaimed that whole field. Fall colors in this area are still not as bright as I have seen them in past years.

Light Breeze, Cool and Clear
What a beautiful day. This is one that the Chamber of Commerce would like to keep all year long. It was not too hot, nor too cool. The sky was clear and a deep blue. Most of my peppers have now been harvested, the grass trimmed from around my raspberries, the raspberries pruned and a 4 mile walk taken. If we don't have a frost tonight (none expected, but this time of year who knows) I will be able to pick some of my larger (Fat and Sassy) peppers. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I should be able to mulch the raspberries and weed my asparagus bed. I might even be able to mow the lawn for the last time this season. Here we go again, everything depends on the weather and how warm it gets as well as if there is rain. I am not expecting rain, but again, who knows.

Cool and Bright
We have dodged another bullet in this area. With the overcast early last evening and the fog this morning we did not have a frost. It came close, and I would not be surprised if people in the low lying areas had frost. We probably will now be good until the end of the week, or maybe even later. It appears that once the fog burns off it will be a great day to get preparations done for the end of the growing season, and some things ready for next spring,. That is what I will be doing, for sure. Raspberries pruned and mulched, lawn mowed and other such preparations.

September Summary
The weather for September was not at all bad. It certainly has started to cool down from the heat and humidity of July and August. I have not checked on any of the weather web sites, so I do not know what the average rainfall is, but it has been a dry month, at least that has been my impression. We did have the remnants of Katrina and Rita go through, but they gave us no trouble, and not a lot of rain in this area. In fact the rain we had on Thursday was more torrential, and left us with more branches down than either of the hurricane remnants.
Here is the summary of data for the month of September:
Average Low Temperature: 52.2
