Overcast, but No Breeze

The indicators on my weather station base and min/max thermometer show fair weather in the offing. I am not sure I believe it, but right now that is all I have to go by. It is cold out there and getting colder. The temperature did not warm up all that much today either (only about 16 degrees). My driveway is a sheet of ice, and I have salted most of it. I guess that we will have the ice until spring. It really makes going out for the mail a real test of skill and balance.
By the way HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Partly Cloudy and Cold Start

At 6.5 degrees it is cold, and there are a lot of mare's tails and mackerel scales around. From that low we have already warmed up to 12.4 degrees. We can be thankful that there is no wind right now or it would be beastly out there. The sun is out, but the light is slightly filtered through the high thin clouds. At least for now we are ending this year on a dry note. According to the records we have (at least in Portland) broken the record for the wettest year since they began to keep records. I would imagine that we have broken a record here also, but I just don't have the data to back that up.

Red Sky This Night

Red sky this night Sailors' delight. The sky says a nice day tomorrow. The prognosticator on both my weather station base and min/max thermometer say the same. My guess is snow, but what do I know. We did have just the slightest of flurries this afternoon, but it was not enough to amount to anything. The temperature has continued to fall all day, and I would guess that it will continue to do so overnight. Tomorrow is New Year's Eve, so stay safe and sane out there, and for those who won't get to see this over the weekend have a very Happy and Prosperous start to 2006.

Rain Overnight-Dry Now

We did have some more rain overnight to the tune of about .31 inches (est.). Our day appears to be a bit upside down as well with the high temperature occurring somewhere overnight. That temperature has already fallen to 34.6 and appears to be continuing to do so. There seems to be a cold front moving in on a northeast breeze, or maybe it is the wind on the back side of the low that just passed through. Where we could not seem to break the freezing mark earlier this month we do not seem to be able to get below it now. As I noted in one of my earlier reports we seem to be having our January Thaw a little early. I have to wonder what January will bring us.

Rain with Heavy Fog

Well, the fog really isn't heavy, but it is very thick. Visibility on the roads is horrible. The rain is staying ahead of the intermittent wipers which is not helping the visibility either. Right now it is raining at 0.12 inches per hour, and that is heavy. My weather station is going to need to be returned since the wind parameters are not operational. They say it will be about 3 weeks before I get the replacement, so for the next three weeks I will need to rely on my analog devices. It was nice not to have to calculate the dew point or windchill, and to have all the parameters right in front of me. Oh well, we can't have everything can we? We have made do for the last 7 months, another month won't be a problem.

'Tis a Foggy Foggy Dew

The temperature is just below freezing and the fog so thick one cannot see 200 feet in any direction. The barometer is down, the relative humidity is up (no surprise there with the fog) and all the indicators are showing the potential for a weather event. With the temperature where it is right now my suspicion is rain. I did note that as a result of the fog the path that Bart and I walk, particularly close to the house, was very icy and very slippery. As the temperature climbs above freezing that should improve. Traffic seems to be moving well on my road, but I would suspect that you will find icy spots on the roadways, so be careful out there if you need to drive.

Clouds Rolling In

The indicator on the weather station shows fair weather, but I don't believe it. When clouds roll in as thick and low as these are I expect some sort of a storm. Right now, looking out of my north and west windows it is as dark as the inside of a pocket. The barometer has dropped about a tenth of an inch of mercury since earlier today, but that is still up from 28.67 in. Hg of last evening at 22:00 hours. At this point we just hold our breath and wait to see what we will get next. Will it be rain or snow or mixed? I do not know, but I think we will get something. As I heard someone say recently "There is no bad weather only inappropriate clothing."

Sparkling Like Diamonds

Where the frost had formed on the carriage house door it was sparkling like diamonds. The sky is as clear as a bell, and the stars appear to be diamond like against the pitch black sky. The roads cleared off fairly well, but there may be patches where the wet froze overnight, so do be careful out there. My rain sensor showed 0.2 inches of precipitation from yesterday, but I suspect that was the roughly 2 inches of snow that we had on Monday melting and being read by that sensor.

Clear Red Sky

The overcast of this early morning left and the clear skies were ushered in on a brisk Northwest wind. That wind has died back this afternoon to barely a zephyr, but the temperature is continuing to fall. I did note that my temperature sensor was getting much more sun this afternoon that it needed, and that caused the recorded temperature to be much higher than it really was. I have now built a shelter to keep it on the north side of its post and shelter it from the direct rays of the sun. It still needs some tar-paper and shingles to cover the roof, but that can wait a little while, or at least until it warms up a bit to make it comfortable to work outside. In the end I may need to get a small solar powered fan to keep the heat from building up inside that shelter.

Only An Inch Here

Shortly after 23:00 hours it stopped snowing altogether. The wind has been fairly steady out of the Northwest all evening, and it still is this morning. With the temperature in the low twenties and an estimated 12 mph. breeze it feels like about 9 degrees on exposed skin, so do bundle up a bit before going out this morning. It appears that route 133 has not been plowed or treated yet, so if you need to travel on that road do take care. The tendency on the weather station is for clear weather today.

It Turned to Snow at 17:00

It has been an absolutely dismal day. It rained all day, as much as .2 inches per hour. Total rainfall for the storm was 0.93 inches. Most of this data is from the new weather station. The only part this is not working yet is the wind sensor, which means I still need to estimate the wind speed, direction and wind chill.
The weather indicator is still showing inclement weather, and that is exactly what we are currently having. There is a bit of a wintry mix going on right now with some snow and sleet mixing to make things a bit interesting. When I went out to work on the wind sensor I found the crust on the, now, very wet snow was forming quickly. It should make things interesting later on this evening and tomorrow morning for the commute.

It's Raining!

Right now it is raining at a rate of 0.02 inches per hour. That piece of snow is still hanging on to my carriage house roof. Right now that seems pretty laughable, but if someone gets hit by it there will not be any laughter. Part of it has fallen, but it is a long roof and it is just above freezing, so it may just have to warm up a bit more before it lets go.

Even Foggier Christmas Night

The new weather station is in place, but it is not yet 100% operational. I am getting the information on the station, but the communication to the computer is not yet in place. I would expect that to happen within the next 24 hours. Currently the unit is saying that the barometric pressure is falling and the tendency is toward some sort of inclement weather. The winds are calm so the wind chill is 33.9. I hope you have had a very Merry Christmas.

Merry Foggy Christmas

It is a foggy morning this morning. That piece of snow is still hanging onto my carriage house roof, but it is now hanging over by about 2 feet, and the water is just running off the end of it. It will fall eventually, particularly if it stays above freezing during the day today.
For those who take stock in such things, this is just the kind of night and morning that Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer would have been employed. I hope that everyone has a very Merry Christmas.

Overcast with Fog

When I looked out of my North window I thought it was raining at first. It was not, rather it was the snow melting and dripping off the carriage house roof. In fact it will probably slide off fairly soon. It has stayed above freezing almost all day which has been good for the holiday travelers. I do not believe that it has gotten as warm here as they were predicting for the Portland and coastal areas. Once again we are having weather which is not the norm for the time of year, but we will just have to accept what we get.
It is a tradition in my family to decorate our Christmas Tree on the night before Christmas, and that will be done again this year. We are also wrapping gifts in preparation for Christmas morning. Our children are grown, but still the traditions continue.

Still Overcast

There was a snow storm overnight that left us with about 2 inches of wet snow. The temperature has already climbed above freezing, so at least some of the snow will melt during the day today. With our base here in the foothills though we will still have a White Christmas. The sky is still overcast and there is some fog to the west. The snow was very wet as was evidenced by the amount that stuck to the branches on the trees.

Overcast and Threatening

The cold snap appears to be over for the moment. We did break the freezing mark today by over 4 degrees. It seems that it has warmed up to snow or whatever the mix is going to be. The barometer has remained almost steady (a 0.04 in. Hg rise is hardly enough to measure) and the weather stick has also remained straight. So I guess it can't make up its mind as to what the weather will be. It has been reported to me that my assessment is no better that the prognosticating experts.

Warmer Than Yesterday

The temperature is creeping up this morning, just as the prognosticators said last night. The wind is still out of the north, but it is not as strong as it could be. Even though there is significant cloud cover it is not extremely uncomfortable outside. It is humid, almost like this is a southern air mass loaded with moisture. If the temperature stays close to where it is we might have some snow, and if it continues to rise it may get a bit mixed. I guess we will just have to wait and see how this one plays out. Oh, by the way the barometer has fallen some overnight, the weather stick is straight out and the indicator on the Min/Max thermometer is indicating foul weather.

Not as Warm as Yesterday

According to the prognosticators it was supposed to be warmer today. Well, they missed another one. Our high was not as high as yesterday, our low was lower than yesterday and our current is lower than yesterday. It was mostly cloudy most of the day, and only now has it gotten to partly cloudy in the west. From the forecast that I have seen we are not really supposed to see the sun until around Wednesday, and we are supposed to have a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain over the next several days. Oh well, if you don't like the weather wait a few minutes or days and you might get something you like or maybe you will get something you like less. We are going to get weather, whether we like it or not, so just be prepared for anything.

Getting Warmer

The temperature has already gone up almost 7 degrees since the overnight low of 1.6. I think my thermometer is possessed, although it may be real. It was still a colder low than yesterday despite what the prognosticators said. It was not supposed to be as cold last night as it was the night before. Oh, that was in Portland and Bangor not the interior of the state.
Needless to say I will not be working out in the barn this morning after the chores are done. The animals on the other hand will be going out. The sheep have woolly coats and the goats have a very good undercoat, and they don't seem to mind the cold, although they do seem to enjoy coming in at the end of the day.

Wintry

The vista is snow covered, the air is crisp and the sky is cloud decked. What a perfect description of a winter day. We have had quite a few of these lately, it just has not been winter. Well now it is, and this is a winter day. There have been some brief periods of sun, but mostly it has been filtered sunlight. If the prognosticators had not said no I would say that it felt like snow out there, but what do I know. I can only observe what happens, and watch the icicles form.

Snow Showers to Bitter Cold

I am certainly pleased that there is no wind here this morning. With the temperature where it is it would be abominable. Overnight we have gone from cloudy to snow showers to sparkling clear and very cold. When I did the chores last evening the goats and sheep came in with a light coating of snow, but not enough to measure.
This is the Winter Solstice, that time when the sun crosses the Tropic of Capricorn. This will be the shortest day and longest night of the year. In other words "Welcome to Winter". We have already been having wintry weather, so this should be nothing new.
ADDENDUM: The temperature dropped to 3.6 just before sunrise, and the current temperature is 4.7. So, it got even colder than it was when I started at 05:00. OUCH!

Clouds Moved In

All day long the clouds have been moving in, and they have now taken up residence in the sky over Wilton. We did once again break the freezing mark, but just barely. That temperature has already dropped below the freezing mark by almost 4 degrees. The barometer has fallen a little bit, so it appears that a front has moved through or is in the process of moving through the area. I was in Farmington Falls earlier and there appeared to be a squall over Mount Blue, but it has not made it here yet. The wind is tending to be from the east, but it is also quite variable and gusty.

"Warm" West Wind

The temperature warmed up over night from that low of 18.6 to a current temperature of almost 21 on the west wind. That low occurred before 23:00 hours last night. It is still partly cloudy and that wind is whipping the clouds across the sky. The wind chill is still a significant feature of this morning's observations. It definitely gives meaning to the statement that the wind has teeth. At least the roads appear to be pretty well dried off, therefore a bit safer for travel.

Southwest Wind Plus Clouds

There has been a blustery and variable wind at around 10-15 miles per hour the better part of the day. That has made it rather uncomfortable to be outside. There is a fairly hard crust on the snow, so not much of it has sublimed even with the wind. For those of you who don't know sublimation occurs when a solid (in this case ice or snow) becomes a gas without going through a liquid phase. This can occur when there is a wind and fairly low relative humidity. We did by the way get above freezing today, but not by enough to cause any significant melting. I did notice this afternoon that the ice and snow at the edge of the road did melt, and that may well have been because of the residual salt mixed in with the snow.

Black and White

When I looked out at the landscape this morning at 05:15 I saw a colorless vista. It was dark enough that the evergreens looked black, the deciduous trees which are now leafless were also and the ground is covered in white. Sometime the moon will have the snow sparkling like diamonds, but the partly cloudy sky did not let enough light through to do that.
It is warmer this morning than it has been, and I guess that the temperature will rise a bit more. I do not believe that it will get warm enough to do any major damage to the snow cover on the ground. With conditions as they are I think that we will have our White Christmas. In order for that to change here it will need to get well above freezing for several days, and I do not see that happening

Red Sky and Clouds

In the twilight we have a red sky in the west, but there are more clouds than clear areas. For all the clouds we had today it was pretty comfortable. The temperature cracked the freezing mark making it fairly pleasant to work outside, and I did some of that clearing the snow off the driveway. Cloudy Bright

The clouds are thin enough to allow sunlight through, but not enough to totally brighten the landscape. Unless there is a drastic change in the weather pattern the snow is here for the duration. Blustery and Cold

It has been a busy day. I have been from Skowhegan for a farmer's meeting to a Christmas party in Topsham, and places in between today. The weather has been busy too. The temperature has gotten above freezing for a little while, but with the clear skies the temperature has fallen back to the low twenties so far, and I would expect it to continue for a while. The wind has taken center stage right now and is making it rather uncomfortable to be outside. That is where I will be going as soon as this is done. While I was out with Bart I heard our Columbia Ram complaining. I told him to meet me on the other side of the barn and I would let him in shortly.

Storm's Over

Wow, is the temperature ever confused. Last night at 23:00 hours we had our high for the day at 26.3, sometime overnight we had a low of 16.1 and now it is already up to 24.1. Like I said, confused. The storm ultimately dropped about 7 inches of new snow on top of what we had. This should make the local ski area happy, but I understand that the areas further north got even more. I don't know what the temperature is going to do today, but as clear as it is now I would suspect a very nice day.

It Sure Is!

All those indicators certainly got it right. The barometer has continued to fall, the overcast thickened some more and lowered, the weatherstick is pointed down and by 08:00 the precipitation started to fall in the form of snow. There has been some mixed precipitation late this afternoon, but it has been changing back and forth between snow and freezing rain (not sleet). With the temperature where it is anything that falls will be frozen either as it falls or when it hits the ground. The roads have become treacherous so be careful out there if you have to go out.
Kudos to the prognosticators they seem to have gotten it right this time.

Storm Coming?

The barometer has continued to fall over the past 24 hours, the temperature has gone up by 5 degrees since 02:30 hours, the weather stick is straight, the wind (gentle breeze) is out of the east northeast and the indicator on my min/max thermometer is indicating precipitation. So, is there going to be a weather event? In my poor, humble and uneducated opinion, yes. How much precipitation will we get? All of it is the best answer I can give. It depends on how long it takes for the storm to go through. Therefore, please be careful out there on the roads today. There is no doubt that travel will get a bit difficult, and I would like everyone back for tomorrows installment, to find out how much precipitation and of what variety we got.

Cooling Quickly and Bright

The moon is out and it is very bright, but the temperature has already dropped over 12 degrees. So it is cooling right off. It was a nice afternoon even though the temperature never did break the freezing mark. It seems that there are some clouds on the horizon, particularly in the south and west.
I did go to sing with the Kora Shrine Chanters this evening and we had a good time performing at Montello Heights in Lewiston. This is certainly a time for Christmas Celebrations and that is what this was. We enjoyed doing it and the residents seemed to appreciate it. Now I need to finish this and go do my milking chores and take care of my animals. I am sure they will appreciate getting into the barn for the rest of the evening.

Bright Moonlight and Cold

When I took Bart out this morning I did not even need a flashlight because the moon was that bright. Again, this was very like a midwinter night with the air cold and crisp, a light breeze from the Canadian North and a lot of moonlight. My weather stick is straight out, the barometer is high and the wind is from the North. All of these parameters seem to indicate that we are going to have a clear day today, but I am not prognosticating. It would be just like Mother Nature to dump a foot of flurries on my prognostication. As I said yesterday we take what we get and unless we want to move elsewhere we like it.

Cold, Angry Wind with Fangs

The combination of the cold and wind had more than teeth in it. The fangs were bared and very sharp. I took a ride to Augusta and when we got out of our vehicle into the parking lot I thought the wind was going to rip my ears off. I wore a gator when I did chores, but left it home while riding. I very definitely wished that I had it when I got out of the vehicle. There was plenty of sun all day, but that did not warm it up all that much. The 20 degree rise in temperature did not feel at all like 20 degrees because of the very brisk northeast wind. As I noted this morning this is weather I would associate with January or February not mid-December. Oh well, we must take and deal with what we get.

Even Colder

If I thought it was cold yesterday morning wasn't I in for a surprise this morning. These are temperatures that I remember in January not early December. Yet I was comfortable taking Bart for his morning constitutional with a sweater, watch cap, gloves and jeans on. It was definitely brisk, but without any wind not too bad. Needless to say though Bart did not tarry outside.
The sky at sunrise was red for what that is worth and the weather stick was pointed slightly down. Here comes the confusing part, and that is the barometer which is quite high. So, I guess that Mother Nature has not made up her mind what kind of weather we will have. The one thing I have noticed is that no matter what we will have weather, it is just the variety that changes.

Just Cold

No, I won't grace this with cool. When the temperature does not even get to 20 during the day, and there is as much sun as we had today I will call it COLD. I know as always this is not the coldest we will see, but we are still in Autumn. It just seems a little early to be this cold. In fact the prognosticators are currently saying that the temperatures are below normal for this time of year. I guess there is a reason why the moon for this 4 week period is called the COLD Moon.

Windy and Cold

This morning there is a definite chill in the air. The wind, although it is only an estimated 7 miles per hour has really put the chill on things. I am glad I have plenty of indoor projects to work on after the chores are done. Even Bart did not want to stay outside for very long this morning. I don't think we spent 5 minutes taking the usual morning constitutional. Please note the changes in low temperature and wind chill. I Was Fooled

When I looked out at 08:00 hours I saw several flakes of snow falling. As time passed enough of them fell that they could be seen on the ground. By noon it was all over. We did not even have enough to cover the bare spots where the cars had been parked for the last storm. In fact they are bare again. So, yes I was fooled into thinking that there was going to be an event, and it turned out to be basically nothing. That only goes to show that I can't do any better (or worse) than the experts. They have studied it for years, and I have only been at it seriously since May. I will learn.

Nothing Yet

It is 06:00 hours and all we have right now are some clouds. So far there has been no precipitation. All the indicators are still in place for an event, but nothing has happened yet. It is cold outside, and with 93% humidity it feels raw, so if we don't have some precipitation I will be quite surprised. At least we have some snow on the ground to slow the infiltration of the frost deep into the ground. A bit more would be nice though. That would be good for the farmers as well as for the ski areas. Let's all think snow, and maybe it will happen.

Is Another Storm Coming?

The Mare's Tails and Mackerel Scales moved in around noon and have continued to thicken and lower all day. The barometer has continued to fall. The relative humidity is in the "high" range. There is a ring around the moon. My weather stick is pointed slightly down. My weather indicator on my min/max thermometer shows clouds and precipitation. With all of these indicators in place I don't think we can miss having some sort of weather event within the next 24 hours.
Overall today we have had a very nice late autumn day. The temperature got above freezing, not by much but above is above. It did give me the chance to continue working on the lamp I mentioned the other day. That piece is coming along very well. I should be able to start painting the ferrous metal parts in the next couple of days. I still have some paint and rust to remove, but it has gone much better than I thought it would. This is good weather for indoor labor.

Clear Above The Fog

When I took Bart out this morning I watched as fog began to develop, and it seems to be hanging in right now. The relative humidity is quite high which would give some impetus to the formation of fog with the snow on the ground and the temperature increasing.
The barometer has fallen significantly, which may indicate a low pressure system moving into the area. If that is indeed the case we are looking at the potential for a storm in the next 24 hours or so. As long as the temperature remains below or near freezing it will not be rain that we will be dealing with. The last storm (Friday the 9th) was not enough to warrant getting out the snowblower and clearing the driveway. Maybe, if there is enough, I will need to do that tomorrow or Tuesday.

Finished Like We Started

Around noon the sun came out and the clouds dissipated for the mot part. Along with the sun came some elevation in the temperature to just above freezing. With the high relative humidity it still feels quite raw out, and my animals are doing a bit of complaining about being outside right now. They will be coming in shortly for grain and milking since it is getting close to that time anyway. There has been some wind because the rise on the west side of the house has been pretty well scoured, and while most other areas around the house are snow covered the grass is visible on that rise. The wind has not been a major factor today like it has been after other storms. Here again the prognosticators missed the mark for this area.

Does Not Look Promising

With a red sky yesterday afternoon I would have expected a much clearer sky this morning. However, it is threatening, and not warm enough for rain. Red Sky Tonight

For a storm that was supposed to be our first big one this is a bit of a disappointment. My best estimate of the amount of snow we had is about 3 inches. From the way the prognosticators talked we should have at least 6-8 inches on the ground after this one. It is a fluffy light powder which will blow all over the place. I am sure that the animals did appreciate staying inside today because of the falling precipitation. I preferred staying in myself.
I think I will wait until after the wind gets done before I snowblow the driveway. In that way I won't have to do it twice, and no one needs to go out until later tomorrow. Just as a point of interest we had one beautiful sunset this evening

Is a Storm Coming?

It is cold enough to snow this morning, in fact the temperature has already climbed almost 4 degrees since the early morning low. The atmosphere currently is holding as much moisture as it can at a relative humidity of 100%. The weather prognosticators are saying that we are going to have a storm. In fact they are saying the coast is going to get clobbered. In this area, because they do not have the exact track and position of the reformed low, they do not have a clue as to how much snow we are going to get. The estimates range from an inch up to almost a foot of the white stuff. All I can say is that from this storm we are going to get it all, every last flake that we have coming to us. How much is that? I don't know!

Brrrrr-It's Still Cold

The temperature did not crack freezing again today, although it did get to the same high temperature as it did yesterday. The western skyline is red this afternoon, and in another 15 or 20 minutes it will be black. Amazing how early it gets dark these days. We seem to say that every year around this time. Just think in 13 days the day length begins to increase. Isn't that a pleasant thought? The one thing we need to remember is that as the days grow longer the cold gets stronger. Am I not the bearer of wonderful tidings? For every silver lining there is a cloud. I am just full of good cheer.
Today I spent working on a very old floor lamp. It has some rust on the cast iron base, as well as on the column. As I have removed the paint I have found that some of the parts are brass plated, while others are truly painted. Once the parts have been cleaned up I will paint the ferrous metal with rust inhibiting primer and paint, but the plated parts will not be repainted. This is one nice piece. I don't know if it is an antique, but I do know it is over 70 years old, and once it is cleaned up and restored it should be quite stunning. This is good cold weather activity.

Brrrr--it's Cold

Yes, less than 10 degrees and it is cold! The air is crisp, and a couple extra layers make it feel better. When I took Bart out there was no wind, and I could not see any clouds, but there was still some snow in the air. I don't know where it was coming from because all I could see in the sky were stars. Right now, to me, it appears that we are gong to have a clear cold day. The prognosticators are saying, right now, that we are going to have a snowstorm tomorrow, and that it will be mainly a coastal event, but that depends on the final track of the storm.

Blowing Snow Showers

All day today we have had snow showers. There has been no accumulation, and we have gone from sun to snow showers and back to sun and back to snow showers again . The one constant has been the wind which has made it feel a lot colder than it actually is, as is noted by the calculated wind chill. Right now our temperature is lower than our early morning low of 17.6. It is 16.2 degrees, and with the wind it feels cold. It looks like there will be some inside work to do tomorrow after chores are done.

Snow Shower

With a slight breeze from the west at 05:30 hours it was snowing. This was strange because the sky directly overhead was clear and star studded. There appeared to be some clouds off to the west a fair distance away, yet it was snowing. By 06:00 it had stopped. The sky to the east right now (06:30) is red with a few clouds. This is most strange, and as an observer has me quite confused. With the red sky there is a portent of foul weather, but the barometer is in the normal range and the wind is from the west which portend fair weather, so I just don't know what to expect other than cold.

Cold with a Few Stars

The clouds have been moving in all day, and right now there are just a few stars in the northwest that are visible. It has not provided any precipitation, and I am not sure that it is going to. This was a good day to get some work done in the barn and I got a stall repaired that I have wanted to do for quite some time. Emmett now has an inside stall to keep him out of the weather, and an outside area where he can be kept separate from the does. In that way their milk does not develop the "goaty" flavor that many people object to.

Frosty

There was plenty of frost on the grass, and on the vehicles in the dooryard. The temperature was into the mid-teens overnight, so it was definitely cold. The storm that the weather prognosticators have been predicting for almost a week did develop, but it is too far south to affect us. The most they are saying we will get are some snow showers and clouds. The weather patterns are playing tricks on them again.
The longer we go without snow the deeper into the ground the frost goes. I really would like to see about a foot of snow real soon to slow the frost down. It does act as a blanket of insulation, and once it is down the depth of the frost begins to reverse because it does thaw from the lowest depth up as well as from the top down in the spring. At least that is my understanding of how it works.

The sky right now is almost clear with a few clouds in the west. The sunset was pink, not a full blown red sky, but it was trying. Sparkling Like Diamonds

The snow has stopped here, and the ground is sparkling like diamonds with the new fallen snow. The accumulation from yesterday and last night is about a half an inch more or less. The temperature is brisk, but not uncomfortable. Since there is no wind it does not cut through all the layers of clothing that you have on.
I have noticed that the ground this morning is much more uneven as a result of the frost beginning to move into the ground. It made it much more of a challenge to cover that ground quickly when taking Bart out for his morning constitutional. I thought it would be good for all to meet our new addition, so he is pictured below this morning. He is a full blooded and registered Nubian, and a very pleasant fellow.

Snowing

Yes there is that word again. There is a bare 0.1 inches of snow on the ground. It has continued almost all day, and we have had only 0.1 inches. There is no wind and the flakes continue to fall lightly. Of course they are all light those little flakes. It is when they gang up on us that they become a problem. It is only 16:45 hours and as dark as the inside of a pocket outside. My new breeding buck is adapting very well to his new surroundings. He has absolutely taken over his assigned territory, and seems to be of a delightful temperament. He does not even seem to have the extreme odor I have noted on other bucks I have had, and that is good. He appears to be fitting into our farm very well.

Shades of Gray

During the past hour we have gone from mostly cloudy to overcast leaving us with a morning that is little more than shades of gray. It is cold, raw and in general not very pleasant. It is not snowing or raining or presenting us with any other precipitation. It is just dismal.
The frost is finally beginning to get into the ground, and now we need some snow to slow that process. The snow won't make it warmer, in fact if I recall correctly when there is snow on the ground the temperatures are actually colder, but it will insulate the ground so the frost does not go as deeply into it.

Wind with Fangs

The wind this morning was little more than a zephyr compared to this afternoon and evening's. The bite of this morning was little more than a tickle. The temperature right now is lower than the morning low by at least one degree and I suspect that it will continue to fall overnight. The ground is finally beginning to get hard enough to support my weight, although I still will not drive my truck on the circular part of my driveway. I will wait a few more days before I will do that.
It seems that finally we are going to get into some sort of a wintertime weather pattern. There has been talk all week about a plowable winter storm Monday into Tuesday and cold beside. Cold, snow, and wind certainly sounds like a wintertime pattern to me.

Wind With Teeth

There was a definite sting to the wind this morning. You could say it had quite a bite. Overnight we had a little snow amounting to frosting on the grass. A quarter of an inch is generous for the amount. Right now it is not snowing and the clouds appear to be breaking up from the west.
Today will be a good day to celebrate Chester Greenwood Day in Farmington, Maine. If you don't know who Chester Greenwood was, he was an inventor. His major claim to fame was that he invented the earmuffs. So all of you who will wear earmuffs today are celebrating his life.

Cooling Down and Raw

So far today we have had a little bit of everything. There were some rain showers this morning, some snow showers this afternoon, a bit of sun and temperatures in the forties this noon time and now it is overcast and raw. What else can be said about a day like today?

Overcast After The Rain

It rained last night again, and since my rain gauge froze yesterday I brought it in, so I can only estimate that we had about 0.1 inches of rain. It is still overcast, so we may yet have some more inclement weather. The temperature never did quite make it to the freezing mark, and has already risen several degrees. The rain we had was gentle, so it did not make the puddles reappear in my side yard, or even in the driveway. Right now we don't need any more rain, what we do need actually is snow. We will get that when Mother Nature says we will, and not one moment before.

Clouds Moving In

This has been a day of different sky covers. We had gone from sparkling clear to overcast, back to clear, and currently we are partly cloudy (mare's tails and mackerel scales) with more clouds in the west. It seems to be cooling down quickly from our high of 41.4 a little while ago to an even 40 at 15:30 hours. Looking out of my west facing window I would suspect that it will be full overcast by sunset. It looks like we may be in for some weather with precipitation, and with the temperature headed down as quickly as it seems to be white precipitation would not be out of the question. Well, we had a white Thanksgiving, so we might as well start building toward a white Christmas. That would be appropriate. Like most of us I think Spring can come any time after that, but we will need to wait some 4 months for that turn around like we always do. Nonetheless it will be welcomed when it gets here.

Sparkling Clear and Cold

We are starting off the month of December very clear and below freezing. By 23:00 hours the rain had stopped, the sky had cleared and the stars were very prominent. Right now (07:00 hours) the sky has become overcast again which is a tremendous change from when I first took Bart for his morning constitutional. At that point the skies were sparkling clear and the air was crisp. I am not sure what all this means, but I am sure we will find out as the day goes on. Once again the old adage applies that if you don't like the weather here wait a few minutes, it will change.

Summary for November

Once again this month more than half the days were overcast or mostly cloudy. The amount of precipitation was over 6 inches taking into account that we had 9.5 inches of snow which converts to 0.95 inches of rain. The low temperature averaged out below freezing, so on average we had a cold cloudy start to more than 50% of the days, and a cloudy finish to over 50% of the days in November. It is no wonder that it was difficult to get outside to do anything with preparations for the season ahead. If it wasn't cloudy with precipitation it was cold and the ground was to wet to get things done. I feel fortunate that I was able to get the brush pile burned and the peas and garlic mulched. I hope that the seeds and cloves don't rot in the ground as a result of all the wet weather.
