Filtered Sun And Cold
It got one whole degree Fahrenheit warmer today than it was yesterday. With a wind chill of -3.2°F, it feels almost 6° warmer than yesterday. Talk about being thankful for small favors. The cirrocumulus clouds are letting through some filtered sun, but that is not warming things up at all.
There were two indoor projects I wanted to do today. For a change, I got them both done. The first I started yesterday, and that was about 3 lbs. of cottage cheese. It is absolutely delicious. The second was to replace a pull chain light fixture. That also has been completed, and without feeling the effects of alternating current on my body. As I have said before, there are always things to do inside during the winter.

Overcast Again
It was almost 10° warmer this morning than yesterday, when Bart and I took our walk. The sky was between mostly cloudy and overcast this morning when I was outside. Both of my electronic instruments are calling for mixed sun and clouds with improving conditions. Even the weather stick is getting into the act by pointing up, calling for improving conditions.
We have now reached the last day of February, and the weather has given us one wild ride. In terms of winter weather it has been a month of extremes. It will be interesting to look at the highs, lows and averages when I do the summary tomorrow.

Clouds Are Still On The Horizon
The clouds from this morning provided us with nothing. There was no rain, no sleet, no snow or any other precipitation. It has just been cold. The two electronic instruments have been giving storm warnings all day. The weather stick, on the other hand, seems to have it right with an upward swing and a call for fair weather. I guess I have to agree with the weather stick, although with a wind chill factor of -9.8°F I can hardly call that fair weather.
This is the kind of day when inside projects like making cottage cheese are in good order. That is what I am doing with three gallons of my goat milk. Other great activities on a day like today are caning chairs, knitting wool socks, reading or anything else that you can do inside would be appropriate.

Arctic Blast
This is truly a blast of arctic air. By the time we went outside, my Min/Max thermometer was registering a -2.2°F. That sensor is in a small cul de sac of the house where there is no air movement. The other sensor is in a very open field where there is a lot of air movement, and it recorded a low of -0.5°F. It is now 6:00 and the temperature has begun to rise.
The prognosticators are saying, "It will be clear this morning.” I think they need to look out the window because right now, it is partly cloudy, and the clouds look like they are moving in from both the east and the west. At least they are on both horizons. This confirms both of my electronic instruments indicating deteriorating weather.

Freezing??
Once again, we have not gotten above the freezing mark. In fact, the temperature has fallen faster and further than it did yesterday afternoon. It is already down to 14.5°F. Not only that, but the wind has started to blow. It will get downright uncomfortable out there this evening. Around noontime, the water was flowing off my carriagehouse roof, but now there is an icicle about 2 feet long hanging from the edge of the metal roof.
Once again, there is some disagreement between my electronic instruments and the weather stick. My electronic instruments are still calling for deteriorating weather, while the weather stick is calling for fair weather. Looking to the west, I see significant cloud cover moving in. Therefore, my best guess is that the weather stick is wrong. That is my guess and I am sticking to it.

We Had Snow
Overnight we did have snow. There was not much, a little less than a half inch. It has also remained cold. At least the sun is up and out, which should help to warm things up a little bit. It is obvious; we are in the grip of an arctic cold front.
With the sky as clear as it is, and with the sun out it is very puzzling why both of my electronic instruments are indicating deteriorating weather. There has been no significant decrease in the barometric pressure to warrant that tendency. Since I started this commentary, the temperature has gone up 2° to 7.7°. Further, the wind has begun to blow at 1.1mph. That ought to make it feel a little cooler

It Looks Like Snow
The temperature today did not get above freezing. Despite the cloud cover, the temperature is falling rapidly. It has already fallen to 17.4°. Fortunately, there is no wind to make things feel even colder. Both of the electronic instruments are showing a tendency toward deteriorating weather. The weather stick, on the other hand, is showing a prediction for fair weather by pointing up. I do not know if it will snow this evening, but it certainly looks and feels like it will. Well, this is the weekend, is it not supposed to be inclement weather?

A New Batch Of Arctic Air
We rose this morning to very cold temperatures. While they are not as cold as they could be, they are still cold. The sky this morning was mostly cloudy, covered mainly by nimbostratus clouds. There is some filtered sun, but I do not expect it to warm things up very much. This arctic air should give the ski areas an opportunity to make large quantities of snow.
My two electronic instruments are showing a tendency toward fair weather. If the clouds continue to break up I would tend to agree with them. Just to note, the weather stick can't make up its mind, it is straight out.
Yesterday afternoon we saw the male and female cardinal at our feeder, along with the usual variety of chickadees, a downy woodpecker and nuthatches. Feed must be becoming difficult to find in the woods since the population at our feeder seems to be increasing.

A Total Of An Inch Of Snow
We did have a total of an inch of snow, but it melted in the rain gauge and showed up as 0.04 in. of precipitation. It melted because the temperature got to 37.0°. The wind has also started to blow making it feel much colder outside. This is a northwest wind, which probably means it is ushering in a blast of cold arctic air. That is to be expected, since we have not had much of that this winter. It will probably not last very long, just like the last time, simply because is so late in the season.
At this point in the season I feel, as many others do, that it is time to begin gardening. During the next couple of weeks I will probably start my tomatoes and peppers. I am ready to begin to see green and growing things. Of course, I said that right after Christmas. I have a whole bunch of seed catalogs that I'm just aching to order from.

Some Accumulating Snow
Well, wasn't I surprised this morning, there is snow accumulating on the ground. There isn't much, only about a half an inch, but at least there is something. It is not very cold, and the relative humidity is high, so the snow is rather wet and heavy. It is warming up, even as I speak, so while it is snowing now, it may not be for a long.
Obviously, the sky is overcast, and all three of my weather indicators, including the weather stick, are predicting continued foul weather. I just looked outside again, and it is snowing even harder than it was earlier. The visibility has been reduced, and the roads in this area have not been treated. It would be advisable to leave extra time for your morning commute.

A Prophecy Fulfilled
It has been snowing lightly since about 10:00 this morning. We have had virtually no accumulation of snow. There is almost enough to see on the ground. Currently, the predominant feature is the fog.
The temperature has once again gone above freezing. This is actually great weather for collecting sap from the maple trees. It goes below freezing at night and warms up to a little above freezing during the day. The people who make maple syrup from that sap should be having a banner year. If there is a maple syrup producer reading this blog I would appreciate it if you would let me know how this season is going.
My three weather indicators are, for a change, in agreement. They are all indicating deteriorating weather. Even the prophecy of this morning's red sky has been fulfilled.

An All Day Snow
A Cloudy Start
When I first went out this morning, the sky was clear. The moon was rising, and it was an eerie orange crescent. Since then, the clouds have moved in, as you can see from the photo below we definitely have a red sky this morning, and the sun is a big red ball on the horizon. The cloud type is nimbostratus if I read the description correctly. The temperatures are still quite moderate for this time of year, and if they continue to climb the way they are we will, once again, have rain instead of snow (If we have any precipitation at all).

Clouds Moving In
The clouds are moving in this afternoon. It has again warmed up to almost 40° making it very pleasant to be out and about. The sun has played hide and go seek most of the day, but that has not slowed the temperature very much. This afternoon none of my indicators are in agreement. My weather station console is calling for continued fair weather, the min/max thermometer is saying mixed with downward tendency and the inevitable weather stick is up indicating fair weather. Our other indicators, the red sky this morning (was not prophetic yesterday morning) and a steady or slightly falling barometer cannot seem to agree either.

A Clear Red Start
The sky this morning was clear and red to the east. The temperature is continuing to moderate making this a relatively pleasant morning. The temperature is already in the mid teens. The two electronic instruments are indicating improving weather, while the weather stick is confused, calling for deteriorating weather. Of course it usually calls for deteriorating weather in the morning.
We continue to look for the snowstorms that would keep the frost from going to the center of the earth. Those storms, I fear, are not going to arrive this year, and we are going to be tilling up chunks of frost well into June. We will just have to deal with that in our gardens.

A Cloudy Finish
Once again, the temperature has gone above freezing. The two electronic instruments are indicating deteriorating weather, and the weather stick is ever so slightly making a positive statement about the impending weather. I have a tendency to go along with the red sky from this morning, the clouds from this afternoon and the electronic instruments. The barometer has also fallen indicating a negative change in the weather. On a brighter note, there are 5 weeks and 3 days to the start of open water fishing season. Even now, there is plenty of open water, so we should be able to do some fishing on April 1st.

A Very Cool Start
This morning has dawned very cool, with a red sky. It is nice to see the sky beginning to get light before six o'clock. Of course, the old saw that "As the days grow longer the cold grows stronger" certainly seems to apply this winter. There is some moderation in the temperature as was evidenced by the excursion of the temperature above the freezing mark yesterday. The indicators on my electronic instruments are calling for changing weather, and even the weather stick is pointed slightly down indicating the same thing. Looking west there are some clouds moving in making this a mostly cloudy start to the day.

A Very Pleasant Day
This has been a delightful day. The temperature actually broke the freezing mark which was very nice for a change. It was sunny most of the day, and this evening the sky was star studded. In fact, I was able, for the first time to see Orion and Cassiopeia. I have never been a student of Astronomy, but with a clear sky like this it is hard not to be. Of course everyone knows the big and little dipper, and those were quite bright this evening. All three indicatiors are calling for a change in the weather.

Nice Morning
The temperature is already above 20°. The sun is shining, and the wind is blowing moderately around the three miles an hour. My electronic instruments are indicating continued fair weather. The weather stick, as usual, is not quite sure what the weather is going to do. With the possible exception that there is no snow or very little snow on the ground, this should be a delightful midwinter day. I am sure that the ski areas have been able to make copious quantities of snow for the downhill skiing trails. Those of you that enjoy Nordic skiing may find it a bit more difficult to exercise that option.

The Cold Moderates
At nearly 18° it is much more comfortable than it was this morning. It appears we have survived this arctic blast. There are still some clouds on the western horizon. The sun has gone behind them, but there is no red sunset. With some clouds moving in, I do not expect it to get as cold as it did last night. This has been a good day to work on inside projects.

The Cold Remains
This morning the cold remains in place. We had one wind gust of about 25 mph around midnight, but since then the winds have stayed around five miles an hour. My electronic instruments are indicating continued fair weather. The weather stick is still confused indicating changing weather. The sun is quite bright, but there are a few cirrus clouds around giving us partly cloudy skies. The majority of those clouds are on the western horizon. I do not think they are going to develop into a precipitation event, at least for the present.

Here Is The Cold
Right now, the temperature is falling faster than I can get the blog done. In the past ten minutes, the temperature has fallen 0.6°. All of the weather indicators including the weather stick are calling for fair weather. The barometer has risen also indicating fair or improving whether. The winds have finally diminished and right now are running at 1.1mph. If you notice on this morning's blog I have changed and the low temperature from 11.8° to 11.1°. I think the overnight low tomorrow morning will be significantly lower than that. (It already is.)

There Goes The Wind
It is just before 05:00 hours, and the winds have decreased in intensity. They are still out of the South Southeast and running at 4 to 7 mph. That is a lot better than 10 to 25 miles an hour that they were around midnight. The skies have cleared and the temperature has taken a real nosedive. It appears that it will not be as cold as the forecasters predicted yesterday. For this area, they were calling for sub-zero temperatures. Right now it is 11.8°, and for the middle of February that is not too bad.

We have had just over 0.1 in. of rain. That did not approach the torrential amounts that were forecast. The rain has stopped, and the predominant feature is now the wind currently blowing at 15.6 mph. The temperature is falling out of the sky. It appears that the arctic air mass is on its way for a visit. I thought we were supposed to have some snow from this storm, but that just did not happen

Snow Disappearing
The snowpack has been reduced even more overnight. The temperature only got to about 30° which was not cold enough to freeze what little snow was left on the lawn. We still have had no rain despite the threatening clouds. Both of he electronic instruments are calling for deteriorating weather. The weather stick, on the other hand, is not sure what it is going to do. The weather forecasters are now saying that the storm will start sometime this afternoon. Further, they are saying that it will only last for a few hours. We will know that it is over when the wind shifts to the west, becomes much stronger and the temperature goes well below freezing. No Rain Yet
There has been no rain yet. The ground is thawing out and there are patches of mud here and there. The snow pack here in Wilton is all but gone. There is a pile here or there where it was plowed, but on my lawn, there is almost none. It has continued warm again today, so all there is left to do is to wait for the rain to start and erase the rest of the snow from the lawns. If it gets as cold as the forecasters say it is we will be in for a surprise on Saturday. Again, if they are right, it will not last long. I did say after Christmas that I was ready for spring, and I guess this is one of the longest I can remember here in Maine.

Rain in the Offing?
Although the indicators on my electronic instruments are calling for continued fair weather, the sky and the weather stick are saying something else. With the temperature at 30.3°, I suspect any precipitation will not be snow. Once again, we are on the wild weather rollercoaster.
I have just looked at the regional radar, and it appears that there is a large mass of moisture headed our way from Toronto down into Virginia. It appears that this storm, as many of them have this winter, will be somewhat west of us putting us on the warm side of it. This will probably result in rain rather than frozen precipitation. The weather prognosticators are calling for the temperature to take a nosedive after the storm passes. They are calling for us to have our first serious sub-zero temperatures of the season. The one thing we can be thankful for is that it is late in the season, and should not last very long.

Another Very Warm Day
It is difficult to comprehend the middle of February and temperatures in the low fifties. That is just incredible. The barometer has started the slow spiral downward and the indicators are calling for the weather to deteriorate. All of them, except, of course, the weather stick which is pointing up indicating fair weather. Oh, well we can't all be right all the time. Of course, we will take this kind of weather when we can get it during the winter. We may yet, however, pay for this stretch. I have heard that we had best get the woolies out over the weekend because the arctic is getting ready to pay us a visit.

A Hazy Old Moon
The sky, before dawn this morning, is nearly covered by cirrostratus clouds giving a hazy appearance to the nearly full moon. It is not cold outside either with temperatures in the mid-twenties. The last wind we had was out of the south southeast, but now it is calm, making it reasonably comfortable outside, Despite the clouds the barometer is rising, the weather stick is straight and both of the electronic instruments are showing improving or good weather. How can I argue? If we start to have precipitation with no change in those indicators, I will argue. Can you tell I am not sure I trust the indicators based on what I see in the sky?

Water Dripping Off The Roof
The temperature has once again reached the forties. The snow that fell over the weekend (what little there was) is almost all gone. The water is dripping off my carriage house roof with no sign of icicle formation. The barometer is rising and both of the electronic instruments are indicating fair weather. Even the weather stick is pointed up. There are some clouds around, and the sky is mostly cloudy, but it is a pleasant day anyway. Those clouds, by the way, are what I used to call "fair weather clouds". They are big puffy and individual, not the kind that usually gang up on us and bring inclement weather.

Temperature is Up
Overnight the temperature did not approach the lows of the thirteenth. We were fully 12° higher than that. When Bart and I went for our morning constitutional, the moon was so bright that I did not need a flashlight. There was, and is, some wind, making it feel colder than it really is. It certainly helped to get us in more quickly. The temperatures are certainly showing some moderation. This is not unusual at this time of year with the sun getting higher in the winter sky.
This is the kind of weather that the producers of maple syrup look for. It gets warm during the day and cools off at night. This gets the sap running so that it can be collected for boiling. There is one producer not far from us who has been collecting maple syrup for over a week. If the weather continues as it has this will be one of the longest syruping seasons that we have had in a long time.
All three of my weather indicators are calling for improving weather, and I must agree.

While New York and Boston were being buried under as much as 2ft. of snow, we escaped with barely a half an inch. The most wind we had was a gust of almost 11mph at around 1800 hours yesterday afternoon. The prediction of snowfall for this area was in the three to 6in. range, and obviously, we did not even get close to that. Fortunately, the temperature has remained in the teens and single digits, which will allow the ski areas to continue to make snow. When I started this the sky was mostly clear, but now it appears to be mostly cloudy. Both of my electronic instruments are indicating improving weather. These clouds may just be the remnants of yesterday's storm. I guess we will see what happens later.

Snow, Snow Beautiful Snow
The promise of this morning is being fulfilled. It has been snowing since about 10:00 this morning, but the accumulation has only been about a half an inch. It is continuing to snow so we do not yet know what the final amount will be. The barometer, base station, electronic thermometer and whether stick are indicating continued foul weather. There is wind from time to time so the snow is blowing sideways at times. The visibility right now is about 200yds, so keep that in mind if you need to be on the roads this afternoon.

A Gray Winter Day
This morning has dawned overcast, cold and raw. The electronic instruments are promising a change in the weather, and it will apparently not be pleasant. Even the weather stick is calling for a change in the weather. It appears that any precipitation that we receive will be frozen, and my guess is that it will be snow. By tomorrow morning we will know if the promise of the electronic instruments will be fulfilled.

A Bright Winter Day
The sun has done its job today. It has warmed things up above freezing, in fact 35.2°. There are some clouds on the horizon as I look out my west window. Those clouds appear to be moving in very quickly. One of my electronic instruments is indicating deteriorating weather; the other one is still indicating fair weather and the weather stick is pointed up indicating continued fair weather. Whom do you believe the red sky this morning, the Min/Max thermometer, the weather station or the weather stick? At this point, I am not sure. We will just have to wait and see what happens overnight.

Bright and Very Cold
Wow, if we thought we were in the deep freeze yesterday, this morning gives new meaning to DEEP FREEZE. The temperature has gone up almost 10° since 6:00. This morning the sky was clear, but at sunrise, there was a beautiful shade of red. My electronic instruments are indicating a tendency toward fair weather. The weather stick is straight or slightly elevated, and that also indicates fair weather on the way. Right now, the sun is bright so I have to agree with these indications. The red sky gives one pause to consider a change in weather in the next 24 hours or so.

Winter is Back With a Vengeance
We are definitely back in the deep freeze. The temperature never got above 25° this afternoon. The barometer keeps going up, and the electronic instruments keep indicating fair weather. The temperature has already fallen almost 10° since the afternoon high.
With the exception of a few clouds in the west, the sky is almost perfectly clear. The sun is gone from the hills, leaving a light red afterglow. This is definitely not the sky one expects when the predictions are calling for a significant snowstorm over the weekend. I guess we will see what happens over the weekend.

Colder Than Yesterday
We did have a brief snow shower last evening before 22:00 hours. The temperature is about 1.1° colder than it was yesterday morning. Just a note on yesterday's temperature, it did get just above freezing at 32.1° yesterday afternoon.
Both of my electronic weather sensors are indicating fair weather. The weather stick is calling for unsettled weather. With the current predictions from the weather prognosticators, I have a tendency to believe the weather stick rather than the electronic weather sensors.
The temperature has gone back into freefall, and is now at 2.4°. If the minimum temperature needs to be adjusted, I will do so later

Some Clouds, Temperature Falling
The temperature appears to be in freefall again, even though there are some clouds both east and west of us. It has fallen almost 2 degrees since I started this about 15 minutes ago.
I don't know how many of you noticed the huge ring around the moon last night, but it was there. The sun is setting in the clouds as I look out my west window. The ring around the moon, the cloudy sunset and the mare's tails and mackerel scales all lead me to believe that we are in for some unsettled or stormy weather. Despite all of these signs my weather indicators, including my weather stick are calling for fair weather. I do not believe them at this point, but will go with what I can see on the horizon.

No Precipitation
Despite the fact that we had clouds last evening, there was no precipitation. The clouds moved silently away allowing the temperature to freefall to very cold lows. The sky to the east has some clouds, and a tinge of red, although not as spectacular as I have seen in the past. Both of the electronic instruments are indicating fair weather and the weather stick is straight or just slightly elevated indicating unsettled or slightly improving weather. Once again, whom do you believe? There were some mare's tails and mackerel scales yesterday afternoon, so that could be an harbinger of foul weather afoot.

Sun to Clouds
This morning started with blazing bright sunshine. This afternoon is ending with, by my best guess, nimbostratus clouds. At this point all three of my indicators (electronic and weather stick) are predicting fair weather. The barometer is down slightly, and the sky does not inspire confidence in that prediction. I am tending to predict that we will see some unsettled weather, but as I have said before I am just a weather enthusiast, so what do I know?

Wintry Chill
We have not had many mornings when we could call the weather a wintry chill, but we have some time before winter finally gives up. This morning is one of those mornings when there is definitely a chill in the air. Fortunately the winds are light and variable, so the wind chill is not really a factor here.
All three of my weather indicators are calling for fair weather, and I do agree. This should be a pretty day, albeit a bit on the cold side.

Some Wind, Some Teeth
The temperature has not gone above freezing all day. I guess that winter is back in form. There is some wind and with the temperature where it is there is little wonder that it has teeth. We have been fortunate that we have not had more of this type of weather all winter.
All my weather indicators are professing fair weather, and by the look of the sky I would have to agree.

Some Cold Air
We are starting out this morning with temperatures in the teens and some snow flurries. There is even some wind right now. It is colder this morning than it has been in quite some time, but it is still not as cold as usual for this time of year. Further, it is only partly cloudy, since I was able to see quite a few stars in the morning sky.
The temperature is falling faster than I can keep up with it, so I will need to make the adjustments later this morning. I should also mention that the electronic instruments are indicating fair weather, and the weather stick is straight indicating changing weather. Who does one believe?

Snow Showers
This afternoon we have started to have some snow showers. There has been enough snow to see a buildup on the side of the road, but not really enough to measure. That may happen later this evening. The temperature right now is lower than our overnight low from this morning. Not only that, but we now have some teeth in the wind with a wind chill of 23.4°. The temperature is continuing to fall, the barometer is rising, the wind speed is increasing and so is the relative humidity. The electronic instruments are showing a tendency toward fair weather while the weather stick can't make up its mind. My own best guess is that we will have unsettled weather.

The Fog is Gone
Overnight the wind did pick up and the fog, along with most of the clouds, was gone by this morning. The temperature did fall, but not quite as much as I thought it would. It is actually quite pleasant outside, just a bit cool. The breeze is quite gentle, and at this point is not making it feel colder that the ambient temperature.
Both of my electronic instruments are indicating a return to fair weather, and the weather stick is showing a tendency toward improving weather. It is straight out rather than down, as it usually is in the morning. The roads did dry, in this area, overnight, so the morning commute should not have been too bad.

It Has Finally Stopped
Yes, the rain has stopped, but now the fog is moving into the area as thick as pea soup. The temperature has not dropped very far yet, and as long as the clouds and fog remain, it probably will not. If the wind does come all the way around to the North or Northwest then the fog will dissipate and the clouds will move out so the temperature can fall. From what I see on the radar we may have a little more rain to deal with, and then it will be gone. The temperature can then free fall below freezing where it really belongs at this time of year. I hope that the roads will dry out before it falls very far though.

Another Threat Fulfilled
I got one right! I said that we would have some precipitation overnight, and indeed, we have. All the ice and snow is off the roof of my carriage house, and that is good. The temperature is once again above freezing. In fact, it never did go below freezing last night as noted by the low temperature overnight.
All of my weather indicators are showing inclement weather. For once, it appears that they all agree. Their forecast is for this to continue well into today, and I guess I must also agree.

Raindrops Are Falling On My Roof
February 04, 2006
It's Overcast Again!
We did have some periods of sun today, but the clouds have moved back in to, once again, become the predominant feature of the day. That sheet of ice and snow together with the icicle have fallen off the carriage house roof. We are on the temperature rollercoaster again, just like last month. At least this is keeping the amount of oil or other fuel that we need to burn at a lower than normal level. That should help our pocketbooks. Right now, we need all the help we can get. Both of my electronic instruments are indicating fair weather, and the weather stick is not quite sure since it is straight out. I think things will deteriorate and we will have some more inclement weather.

Foggy and Cold
Overnight we had a power outage for about seven hours. That is inconvenient, but not the catastrophe it was in 1998. We have a generator, and that is why I am able to do this now. There is a repair crew on scene, but I am not sure, whether a tree fell on the lines, or if there was an accident.
Once again, it is warmer than it should be at this time of year, but with the fog, it feels raw. Looking out my North window, I see that a sheet of snow and ice will probably fall off the carriage house roof by the end of the day. It currently extends about 24 inches over the edge of the roof. Right now, the sky to the east is partly cloudy, while to the west it is overcast. It looks like some more heavy weather is moving in even though the electronic indicators are saying it is going to be fair today. Right now, I will take the weather stick, which is saying it is going to deteriorate today.

Threat Fulfilled!
There was precipitation threatened this morning, and since around 10:00 hours that threat has more than been fulfilled. It has rained enough to melt the frozen precipitation mounded up in my rain gauge and begin to register rainfall amounts. I have done this as an estimate since it has only started to register based on what has been recorded at Souther Road plus what I have seen here for a total right now of 0.84 inches of rain. It is still raining, and looks like it may do so for a while yet. Who says that winter weather in Maine can't be fun and interesting?

Threatening
This morning the sky is threatening. Overnight we did have about a half an inch of snow. Once again, the indicators are confused. The Min/Max station showing mixed weather with a deteriorating tendency, the base station showing fair weather with an improving tendency. The weather stick, as usual, is pointed down. Looking out my west window, either fog or precipitation is moving in. I have heard a report that the maple trees' sap is beginning to run. If this is true this may be a very long maple syrup producing season.

This has been another one of those days. It has remained overcast, and the temperature has barely moved. The sky has threatened precipitation all day, yet we have had absolutely nothing. However, this is only Thursday; it is not yet the weekend so we are not ready for rain or snow. Do we detect a bit of sarcasm? It certainly seems that lately the weekend is when we get our precipitation. Except for my weather stick, which is pointed down, my electronic instruments, are calling for fair weather. I do not really believe them, because from a look of the sky we are going to get some precipitation.

The Sun is Fickle!
This is Candlemas, Imbolc, mid-winter or groundhog day depending on your particular persuasion. On this day you should have half your hay and half your firewood left for the season. On this day also the groundhog comes out of its burrow, and if it sees its shadow it hibernates for six more weeks of winter. If it does not see its shadow spring is supposed to start immediately. Despite the fact that it is overcast I think we will see at least six more weeks of winter.

The Sun Shines!
Yes, the sun does shine! It is absolutely marvelous to look out my west window and see that beautiful golden orb. The temperature has warmed up, and the snow on my walks has melted. The four-foot icicle that was growing off the carriage house roof is gone. Apparently, it fell off sometime during this afternoon. The water is flowing off the carriage house roof almost as it does when it is raining. My electronic instruments are in disagreement, my base station showing a downward tendency and inclement weather, my Min/Max unit showing mixed weather and an upward tendency. My weather stick is straight indicating mixed weather. Things seem to be as confused as they were at the end of last month. Once again, all I can say is who do you believe?

Beautiful End to a Beautiful Day
Storm Ended Overnight
This storm has finally ended. It left us with an additional 2 in. of snow. The temperature bottomed out in the mid teens, and is already on the rise. The cloud type this morning is cirrus, which can indicate fair weather when the wind is from the north. All three of my indicators are showing a tendency toward deteriorating weather.
