Some Cirrus Clouds
We have gone through some periods of clouds and sun today. Right now, 16:15, there are some cirrus clouds from the zenith to the eastern horizon, and very bright sun from the same zenith to the western horizon. It is as though there has been a line drawn across the sky. All the electronic instruments are indicating an approaching storm, while the weather stick goes on calling for continued fair weather. We shall have to wait until tomorrow morning to find out who is right on this one.
Bart and I took a great walk this morning, and I started on the third stall. Mud season has gotten in the way of my barn cleaning. With all the warm weather, the ground has gotten so soft that I could not get the garden cart through it. I will need to use the garden tractor and trailer now to try to get through the mud. At least the tires are wider, and may not knife into the mud as readily. Man, it is always something. I don't think Mud Season will last that long anyway this year.

Light Red Sky
The sky this morning had just a few clouds on the eastern horizon, and it was a light red. I have seen some spectacular sunrises, but this was not one of them. This does not seem to portend rain, particularly when taken with the forecasts of the electronic instruments and weather stick. All the indicators are showing a tendency for continued fair weather, at least for the next 12 to 24 hours.
I do not have any errands to run today, so a walk with Bart, and work on the stalls in the barn are going to be the order of the day. I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but if you are tired, you have a right to be. You have just endured a 31 day March. Oh, a bad pun is what that was. The summary report will be out tomorrow before I go fishing.

Just a Few Clouds
This has been another gorgeous day. I cannot remember when I have seen a relative humidity of 24%. The barometer is still over 30 in.Hg, and with the exception of a few cirrus clouds on both the eastern and western horizons, the sky is clear. Despite the beautiful day, I did not get the stall finished, because I had to take Bart for a walk, and I needed to go to town for some errands. Fortunately, tomorrow is another day.
All the weather instruments, including the weather stick, are calling for continued fair weather. At this point, I must agree, at least for the next 12 hours or so.

Still Some Cirrus Clouds
The temperature was almost 10°F warmer overnight than it was yesterday morning. There was a thin blanket of cirrus clouds over us which helped to hold in a little of the heat from yesterday. We still have not had any precipitation, and that makes March, so far, a very dry month. To date we have had less than 2 inches of precipitation.
With these warmer mornings, Bart is enjoying his early morning walks, and, to be perfectly honest, so am I. So far, I have not seen any black flies or mosquitoes, and that has made being outside quite pleasant. I have seen a few small spiders and some house/barn flies, but they do not bother like the black flies. The barn has warmed up, so it should be possible to get the number 3 stall cleaned out today. That will leave me with two stalls to finish. This is very early to have that job done.
The electronic weather instruments and the weather stick are promising fair weather again today. In fact, the weather stick is not just up a little bit, as it has been, but the overall angle is 90°. Not only that, but for the first time since I installed the weather station I have seen the icon for the synchronization connection with the WWVB atomic clock in Colorado. I am finally impressed with that.

High Thin Cirrus Clouds
After two picture perfect days, this one is ending with some high thin cirrus clouds. As I noted this morning there was a line of clouds, barely visible, on the eastern horizon. These high thin clouds will probably not, in and of themselves, cause the weather to deteriorate. They do portend some inclement weather in the not too distant future though. The temperature did approach 70°F and that is wonderful for this time of year.
Now on to the instruments. We do have some disagreement there. The Weather Station is calling for continued fair weather, while the Min/Max Thermometer is indicating a change in the weather with deterioration. It seems that the weather stick agrees with the Weather Station in predicting fair weather. Based on the sky and the falling barometer I have to agree with the Min/Max Thermometer, and I suggest that we are in for a change.

Moving Backward?
Our low overnight temperature was the lowest we have had since the 22nd of this month. The sky was essentially clear, but there was one thin line of clouds on the eastern horizon. I don't think that it will affect our weather today, but it might portend something for later in the week. There appears to be plenty of water in the ground, but at this point we do need a bit of rain to quell the fire danger, which is getting quite high. At this time of year, in order to get the frost out of the ground, and get the plants started we do need rain about every 3 days or so. Not like last year where it was impossible to get onto the garden, but a little bit.
All the electronic weather indicators are calling for fair weather, as is the weather stick. When they all agree like this, and the sky is as clear as it is, it is difficult to disagree with them. I would suggest that we will have fair weather today.

It has Finally Happened
What you may ask is it? The temperature has gone over 60°F. Not since last fall have we had temperatures in that region. It has been an absolutely gorgeous day. There was very little wind, the temperatures were up and the sun was shining with no clouds to obscure it.
All of the weather indicators are showing fair weather, and after a day like this I cannot argue with them. For this stretch of weather the weather stick has led the way over the electronic instruments. Can you beat it?
Two things happen on Saturday, the first is the opening day of open water fishing season, and the second is the loss of an hour's sleep. Yes, daylight savings time starts Sunday morning at 02:00. Oh well, we just have to take the bad with the good. (Can you say All Fools Day?)

Frosty & Clear
The sun is up, and there is frost on the grass and the vehicles. As cold as it is, it does not feel very bad outside. It appears that we are going to have another delightful day. There is not a great deal more that one can say about a day like today. It seems that it will warm up and be sunny. Just an awesome day for doing those things outside or in that need doing.
All three instruments (old and new technology) are calling for sunny skies and improving conditions. It is impossible for me to argue with that assessment when I look outside.

Moving in the Right Direction
Spring certainly seems to be on time this year. It is warming up during the day, and getting quite cool at night. If you have looked at the trees, even from a distance, you can see the colors of the branches changing, and that means that the leaves will be out soon, and so will the black flies. I started to work on the number 3 stall, but it is still frozen hard enough to make it very difficult to get everything out and clean it. I would guess that by the end of the week I would be able to get it done.
Finally all the instrumentation and the weather stick are in agreement. They are all calling for nice weather. After this past week I can certainly handle sunny and warm, as I am sure everyone else can. It would be nice to have good weather on Saturday, the first day of open water fishing.

Cooler & Less Wind
This morning the sun rose to look on clear skies and slightly cooler temperatures than yesterday. The clear sky is the predominant feature this morning. Unlike the last several mornings there are no clouds to be seen. This has led the weather stick to continue to point up indicating fair weather, while the electronic instruments are calling for unsettled weather. One of those instruments is calling for improving conditions, while the other is calling for deteriorating conditions. Once again the old technology wins with the weather stick. Lately the weather stick seems to be more accurate in predicting the weather than the high tech instrumentation.
I hope that everyone that went to a "Sugar Shack" yesterday got their fill of Maple Syrup, and had an enjoyable time.

Warm, Windy & Cloudy
Despite the NOAA weather report and the electronic instruments predictions the weather stick has won this round. It has not been a perfect day, but it has not been a bad day either. As the sun rose this morning the clouds dissipated. By noon some nimbostratus clouds had started to move back in, but there were still some breaks in the clouds. Right now (14:15 hours) we are back to being overcast, but it is still pleasantly warm. With all the clouds around we still have not had any precipitation.
We did visit a couple of places where they were celebrating Maine Maple Sunday. The one we visited in Weld was the more traditional, and more pleasant. Their equipment was quite new and up to date, and their syrup was very good. The other one was more interested in selling meals than informing the public about the making of Maple Syrup.

A Blanket of Clouds
Once again we are greeted by a blanket of clouds cast over us. As a result we are warmer at 05:30 than we were yesterday at the same time. It did get a little colder overnight tonight though, and that is probably because it did not get as warm yesterday as it did the day before. The air pressure is not as high as it was yesterday, so I suspect that we have a slightly different air mass over us than we did yesterday. As the sun is rising some of the clouds appear to be dissipating in the east. That may bode well for the upcoming day, particularly since the sky is not red.
That leads me to my indicators. The weather stick is straight out calling for a change in the weather. The electronic instruments are calling for deteriorating weather with clouds and/or rain. I am still not sure who to believe, the sky, which seems to be clearing, or the instruments and their prognostication. I see the sun and the clearing skies, so I am going to stick my neck out and say that it looks like it is going to be a fairly nice day. Oh, by the way the temperature is already above freezing.

Another Dismal Day
With the overcast, even though the temperature approached 50°F it was not a pleasant day. I did the morning chores, went to the transfer station and then went to the hunting and fishing expo in Wilton. Last year there were several fly tyers there. This year there were none. I saw two spinning lure manufacturers, and while I do admit to spin casting at times, I prefer fly-fishing. Many of the other exhibitors were outfitters and guides that wanted us to go to their states or provinces to hunt and fish. To be honest I learned more at the L.L. Bean Fishing Expo last week than I did at this one and that one was "free" except for the gas to get there. Sorry Folks!
Back to reality, the weather stick is up, calling for improving weather. The other indicators are calling for cloudy or unsettled weather with a tendency to deteriorate. I do hope it gets it out of its system overnight, and we have a nice day for Maine Maple Sunday.

Overcast & a Little Below Freezing
Unlike yesterday, the temperature has dipped a little below freezing. There is no wind at this point, and both the barometric pressure and relative humidity are quite high. Combine all this with the overcast sky, and it is difficult to tell what the weather is going to do. From the reports I have heard and read this will not be the pick of the weekend. Tomorrow is supposed to better than
today, and that should bode well for the celebration of Maine Maple Sunday. Here in Wilton there is a hunting and fishing expo at
the Nichols Exposition Center (the old Bass shoe factory). I will probably go over there later.
The weather instruments are in total disagreement with the Min/Max Thermometer saying rain and deteriorating and the Weather Station saying sunny and improving. The weather stick is saying unsettled since it is straight out. I think I will go with the weather stick for today, since I cannot figure it out from the signs I see outside.

Cool, Damp and Raw
Despite the fact that we did not go below freezing last night or today it has remained a particularly unpleasant day. It is overcast and with a relatively high humidity, it has been raw. Earlier this morning, while I cleaned the second stall, I was even able to work up a good sweat. Next week I should be able to finish what I have started. The photo below is of Abby, our first sheep. She was part of a 1989 crop of lambs, quite old for a sheep.
There has not been any precipitation from the clouds that have been hanging over us for the past two days. The weather indicators are in total disagreement. The weather stick is pointed slightly up calling for fair weather. The Min/Max Thermometer is calling for a change with deteriorating conditions, and the weather station is calling for sunny and improving conditions. I guess that you can take your pick as to a forecast. The best I can come up with is unsettled.

Abby--Our 17 Year Old Sheep
Not Quite Freezing
There was a blanket of clouds over us last night, and the temperature did not quite make it below freezing. Those clouds still have not produced any precipitation, and with the barometer as high as it is I am not sure that they will. It is still nice to be able to take Bart out at 05:30 in the morning and not need a flashlight to see where we are going. I noticed that where I had some serious mud in past years the ground appears to be drying out. Even the driveway is only showing a little bit of water on top and very little mud. Yesterday afternoon I took a walk on the garden, and while it was soft, it did not appear to be particularly muddy. I did check to see if any of the peas or garlic had started to grow, and they have not, so I recovered them with their mulch.
The two electronic weather instruments are showing sunny weather with a tendency to improve. The weather stick is not quite sure, as it is straight out indicating a tendency to change. We will see what happens over the day.

Lots of Clouds, but Warm
The temperature has gone over the 50° mark for the first time since early this month. It seems that the extreme cold we have been experiencing has finally broken. The goats have been enjoying being out in the lower field nibbling on whatever they can find. It was such a delightful day that I was able to get into the barn and start cleaning stalls. The first one is done, and its contents are now compost. Depending on the weather, the next stall may be done tomorrow. This seems a bit early to be starting this, but maybe we will have a slightly longer growing season this year.
Today the three weather indicators have it right, sunny weather with improvement. I am not sure how much more improvement we can stand, but a few less clouds might be a good start. I am not complaining, just commenting and observing. Now that I have said that, the clouds are getting thicker. A few more days like this and I will have the barn totally clean and start on finding places for much of the "stuff" that has been stored in the barn for the past several years. What a project that will be!

We're Out and About and It's Spring
Clouds Breaking Up?
The clouds appear to be breaking up and leaving without producing any precipitation. This morning was the first time in quite a while that I have been able to go outside, taking Bart for his morning constitutional, without wearing a coat. That was, indeed, a unique experience. I guess that spring really is on its way. We still have the potential of some winter weather between now and May, but I think the worst is behind us.
Once again, all three of the indicators are calling for fair, improving weather. The sky, early this morning, did have a tinge of pink on the clouds, but I don't know if that is enough to call it a warning sky. Looking out my windows it appears to be getting brighter, but I will report on that later this afternoon.

Stratocumulus Clouds Hanging In
There has been some flurry activity today, but id did not leave a trace on the ground, let alone enough to measure. The clouds have appeared to get lower and lower throughout the day. My electronic weather station is calling for deteriorating conditions and inclement weather, while the weather stick and Min/Max thermometer are predicting fair weather. From the look of the sky and the feel of the air, I must disagree with the two latter indicators and say that I think we have a good chance for some precipitation.
We are now 10 days from the start of open water fishing season, so before long, it really will be spring and we can rejoice.

Clouds Moved In
Last evening I went to a meeting, and when I got home, the sky was star studded. Orion was clearly visible as were the big and little dippers. When I took Bart out this morning for our early morning constitutional all that could be seen were clouds. It was nice, though, at 0530 hours to go out without a flashlight and be able to see everything clearly.
The electronic instruments are calling for inclement weather with a tendency to deteriorate, and the weather stick is calling for fluctuating weather, as it is straight out. There is no fog or any other precipitation, but the air feels "thick". I would guess that is because of the 71% humidity. In reality, it feels like it is going to rain. Even though the temperature is below freezing it does feel like rain rather than snow or other frozen precipitation. Just a note, there was no frost on the grass or vehicles this morning.

A Lot Warmer
This is more like spring! The temperature has warmed up into the mid-forties, and the wind is out of the south pumping some of the warm southern air in here. The animals are enjoying the outdoors instead of huddling where they can be out of the wind, and yet in the sun. Speaking of the sun, it is absolutely brilliant. It would be nice to see a day like this for the celebration of Maine Maple Sunday on the 26th of March.
My weather instruments are in the same mode they were in this morning calling for inclement weather and deteriorating conditions. So far, the weather stick is the only one that has gotten it right today.

A Little Warmer
Everything is relative! At 23.5°F and no wind it certainly feels much warmer than it did yesterday morning. There are a few clouds in the sky, but nothing that appears to be a weather system building toward a storm. Bart was in a hurry to get outside and take his morning constitutional because there were two cars parked in his driveway. There was a third car parked in the ditch about halfway down the hill from his house. I do not know why the car was parked in the ditch, since the air was clear and the road dry. At least now I know why Bart was barking at 04:30 hours this morning.
Both of my electronic instruments are indicating "cloudy conditions" with deteriorating weather. The weather stick continues to indicate fair and improving weather. I am not sure if any of them have it right. The only way to know for sure is to live through whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at us.

Windy, Windy, Windy!
By the calendar and the sun this is the start of Spring. Of course spring arrives 1 day later for each 100 feet of altitude. It also creeps 1°N along the globe every 4 days. It will be a while before it gets here. This is according to my "Weather Wizard's 5-Year Weather Diary" published by Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill.
We have not gone above 40°F since the 14th of March. It has remained windy and cold all day today, and even with the bright sun we could only manage a little over 35°F. We certainly seem to have been in a pattern for the past week. It seems to be continuing. The weather instruments seem to be agreeing that the weather will deteriorate and we will have some inclement weather to deal with. The weather stick, however, goes blithely on calling for fair weather. Wow!

Clear, Cold and Windy
Welcome to Spring! Today is indeed the Vernal Equinox, but we are in the midst of some of the coldest weather we have had all year. For spring like weather, we will have to wait for a few more weeks. So much for the green grass I saw in my lawn the other day. This weather has been pretty good for the maple syrup producers though, I would guess. We have been going below freezing at night, and getting just above freezing during the day.
There was a red sky this morning at sunrise, but it is absolutely clear. The weather stick is pointed slightly up indicating fluctuating weather with a tendency to improve. My electronic instruments disagree with one another. The Min/Max thermometer is calling for fluctuating weather with a tendency to deteriorate, while the weather station says the weather will be fair with a tendency to improve. If people are predicting from this information they will have a difficult time. Two signs are calling for deterioration in the weather and two calling for improvement. All we can do at this point is be prepared for anything.

Very Light Snow Shower
Here in Wilton we have had a very light snow shower. In fact, it was so light that you could almost distinguish the individual flakes on the ground. Needless to say there was no measurable precipitation from that shower. The temperature just barely broke the freezing mark, and with the wind it has not been a great day to be outside. It would have been all right if you could be near a saphouse stoking the fire. Don't forget next Sunday, March 26th, is Maine Maple Sunday. Do get out and enjoy some of that golden nectar.
Back to reality. The weather stick is curled up even more that it was this morning, calling even more adamantly for fair weather. The electronic instruments are not so sure, and are both calling for mixed sun and clouds with deteriorating weather. Since we had one snow shower, I would tend to agree with the electronic instruments this time. Oh well, only time will tell.

Another Red Sky
The way that the cumulus clouds rolled in yesterday afternoon I would have expected to see some precipitation this morning, but such was not the case. There were just a few clouds on the horizon, and the morning star in the east was bright. There is a definite chill in the air again, with the temperature in the low teens. That is right where the National Weather Service predicted it would be.
This morning the weather stick is pointed slightly up indicating fluctuating weather conditions with a slight tendency to improve. This is in conflict with my two electronic weather stations which are calling for fluctuating weather conditions with a tendency to deteriorate. The red sky this morning leads me to suggest that the weather stick just might not have it right. We may yet be in for some inclement weather during the next 24 hours.

Blustery, Cold Finish
There has been quite a bit of gusty wind this afternoon, so if it has felt cold it should have. I went to a fishing expo in Freeport today, and standing outside at some of the exhibits and presentations it got a bit uncomfortable. Most of the afternoon it was sunny, but now the clouds have moved in and the temperature has dropped over 10° F. I should also note that it did not get as warm today, with all the sun, as it did yesterday.
The weather stick is at it again calling for continued fair weather. My Min/Max thermometer and weather station is calling for deteriorating weather, while my weather station console is indicating a downward tendency with mixed sun and clouds. Again I ask, "Who do you believe?"

Clear Cold Start
There really is not a great deal to say about a morning like this. The sky is clear, there is no wind, the sun is bright and the temperature is cold enough to make someone want to be inside where it is warm. The only other point to note is that my two electronic instruments are in disagreement. The Min/Max thermometer downstairs is calling for unsettled weather with a downward tendency, while the weather station says sunny with an upward tendency. The weather stick is pointed slightly up indicating an upward tendency. Who or what do you believe?

Nice Day, but Cool
The Portland forecast called for temperatures in the 40's today, but here we did not get that high. Nonetheless it was a pretty day. I did not get outside to check on the plant growth in the garden, and it is probably just as well. If I had disturbed the mulch it would have exposed the plants (if there are any, to some cold temperatures, and that would not have been good. I will wait a few days before I go poking around to see what is going on in the garden. At least the animals respected the fence today by staying where they belonged. That is always a good sign. They will be coming in soon anyway.
Just to keep you informed, all three of my weather indicators are calling for fair weather. Agreement is good.

Sun's Up, Temperature Rising
It is another cold crisp morning, with the temperature in the mid to upper teens. Most of the water in my driveway has dried up, and there is one more puddle of ice left. The ground is once again frozen, so I can check on the progress of the peas and garlic. If I get to do that there will be a report this afternoon. The visibility this morning is unlimited in the cold crisp air.
Both of the electronic instruments are calling for sunny and improving weather, and the weather stick agrees this morning. There are a few clouds at both ends off the horizon, and what that portends I am not sure. Enjoy the weekend.

Clouds are Moving Through
The temperature did manage to clear the freezing mark. The wind for most of the day did not let it feel that way though. Once again, not only did the wind have teeth, it had very sharp saber toothed tiger type fangs. Ouch! I did get outside to do some fence repair, and it seems to have worked. All the critters are outside and enjoying the freedom of the pasture and field. I am enjoying seeing them outside. They seem to have such a good time.
Just to note all three of the weather indicators a calling for fair weather with a tendency to improve. This is a change that they all agree. I do not think that the clouds portend any significant change in the weather, but I have been known to be wrong.

Sparkling Clear Skies
As the rosy-fingered dawn crept over the eastern horizon, there was not a cloud to be seen. The moon setting in the west was clear and bright. The air was cold and crisp with a light breeze making it feel significantly colder than it actually was. The ground has firmed up again with the cold weather yesterday and during the overnight. Bart and I certainly did not waste any time on our first excursion outside this morning. I was as anxious to get back inside as he was.
Instrumentally the indicators are for fair and improving weather, while the weather stick is only slightly elevated above the horizontal indicating a slight tendency toward improvement. We are still on that weather rollercoaster that we get onto every spring and fall. We just don't have the snow to melt off this year that we have in other years. This should make for an interesting mud season.

Snow Flurries
We have had snow flurries off and on all day today, along with a lot of wind. To be perfectly honest this has not been nearly the pretty day that I thought it would be. It has been a blustery day where the wind had very sharp fangs. The temperature did not rise more than about five degrees, so it has been quite cool, and overall (I say again) not very pretty. My three indicators are still calling for fair and improving weather. I just don't believe them at this point. Things appear to be in a state of flux, and that is not likely to change for a while.

An Angry Winter Sky
A Little Snow
There was a little snow shower last evening before 22:00 hours. It left just a dusting on the ground and at the edge of the road. By this morning, except in very protected areas, it was all gone. Sometime after 22:00 hours also the temperature dipped below the freezing mark. When I was out at 05:15 this morning the sun was just beginning to throw some red rays over the eastern horizon. There were almost no clouds, and the full moon going down was beautiful. Despite the three weather indicators it appears that today will be a pretty day, although a bit cooler than it has been. All three, by the way, are showing fluctuating weather with a tendency to improve.
Just to show you where we are in the seasons Gifford's Ice Cream Shop opens on Friday in Farmington, and I would guess at their other locations as well. That is a sure harbinger of the changing seasons.

Rain Yielding to Sun
The sky currently is partly cloudy, but the rain has stopped. In fact, it stopped right around noon. All three of the weather indicators are still calling for inclement weather. The sun seems to be singing a different tune , however. It seems to be breaking through the clouds and brightening everything up. I still cannot get over the temperature in the fifties though. When I have taken Bart for our little walks I have been noticing that some of the grass is beginning to have some green leaves. I still have not gone out to the garden to see if any of the peas or the garlic have started to grow. If things dry out a bit, and we don't have a half foot of snow I will do that by the weekend. It certainly appears to be getting muddy on the driveway and the lawn, so I can just imagine what the garden is like.

Rain and Fog
The rain has restarted this morning at a little after 04:00 hours. We have now had around 0.8 inches of rain for the month. I hear that this is supposed to turn to snow, and we are to get up to around 5 inches of the white stuff over the next couple of days. That is probably going to help get the frost out of the ground, and shorten mud season considerably. If that is indeed true we may actually be able to get our implements on the garden earlier than usual. I certainly hope so. I was unable to put a garden in last year because of the wet weather we had in April, May and June. My tiller did not like working in oatmeal-like soil, and neither did I.
All three of my instruments are calling for inclement weather this morning. It is not possible to see a red sky this morning because of the overcast, rain and fog. I guess they have it right.

And the Rains Came
It took until after 14:00 hours, but the rain has finally arrived. All the weather indicators are now in agreement with the red sky this morning. This really was a storm warning. The water coming off my carriagehouse roof looks like a waterfall, and a pretty good cataract at that. There is no wind so the rain is falling straight down. I am a little disappointed that it is not snow, but this would be one heck of a snowstorm if it were.
Looking toward the future, we only have 19 days to wait before the start of open water fishing. I'm looking forward to it. Can you tell? It is also interesting that it is possible to write a great deal more about inclement weather than about bright sunny "good" weather. It is funny how the mind works, isn't it?

No Radiational Cooling
When I took Bart out for his morning constitutional the moon was just going down, and the sky was as clear as a bell. Despite that, the temperature was still over forty degrees. The southwest and west-southwest wind seems to be bringing us a great deal of warm air. On the way back in I could hear the wind chimes that we have hanging in the tree near the driveway. They actually sounded quite nice at this early point in the day. It was a gentle breeze that was moving them. That breeze has since died down, and the temperature, which was on the rise, has fallen back a couple of degrees.
Both of the electronic instruments are suggesting that we are in for some deteriorating weather, but the weather stick is still not sure. It is straight out indicating some fluctuation in the weather, but nothing definitive. Further, it is at about the same state as it was last night. Maybe it can sense something that the others cannot. It is 05:30 and I took a look out my east window to find a rosy-fingered dawn on the horizon. Maybe that is what the prediction should be. A red sky at dawning, and sailors take warning. That seems to be tipping the balance of my prognostication for today. Perhaps some inclement weather is in store for us.

Another Warm Day
Even though it has clouded up completely since this morning, and we have had some very light showers it has remained warm. The temperature has gotten into the low fifties. Even now, it is in the mid forties, and that is very warm for this time of year. Fear not, for I understand that by the end of the week we will be back in the thirties for high temperatures. Remember that rollercoaster that I referred to late last week, well, we are still on it.
My electronic instruments are calling for a storm warning. The weather stick, on the other hand is saying we are going to have fair weather. My best bet is that by tomorrow morning the weather stick will catch up with the other instruments. No matter what, our weather is in a state of flux, and it will continue so at least until the end of this month or the middle of next month.

Just Below Freezing
The temperature dipped just below freezing last night, but it is rebounding very nicely this morning. The winds of yesterday have died down, but there is a milky look to the sky as a result of some cirrostratus clouds over most of it. I did not see the sunrise this morning so I do not know if there was a red sky or not. My electronic instruments agree that we are going to have continued fair weather. The weather stick, once again, is not quite sure. It is straight out predicting a change. The sky seems to agree with it since that milky sky has the appearance of mackerel scales and mare's tails.
This has been an interesting stretch of weather. We have gone from freezing temperatures early this past week, to snow on Thursday, to drizzle and fog on Friday and finally to very warm and pleasant temperatures this weekend. We have even had what appears to be the start of mud season. I know my driveway and lawn was very spongy late yesterday afternoon. I know we are not out of the woods yet in terms of snow, but I would suggest that any snow we have from here on out will be short lived, and for those of us that garden it is a good thing.

Mud Season??
Could this really be the start of mud season? From the look of my driveway, it certainly could. Almost all the snow is gone, even from my garden spot. I have not tried to walk out there, but my guess, based on last fall, is that it would be like walking on oatmeal. This has been an absolutely gorgeous day. The sun made it out and the winds have been light, so the temperature soared into the fifties. The skies are clear right now (17:30), and the sun is going down with the sky a gorgeous crimson red.
Just to keep things in perspective the red sky, both electronic instruments and the weather stick are calling for continued fair weather. Wow, can you believe it, that all the portents are for another nice day tomorrow.

All The Snow Is About Gone

Sun Goes Down as a Ball of Fire
March is Confused
It is still supposed to be Winter, but this is really beginning to feel like spring. There is some wind this morning, but it is warm and the sun is beginning to shine as the clouds begin to part. That should give the temperature a real boost as the day goes on. I think that the rest of the snow that we had on the ninth will be gone by the end of the day, and that some more of the patchy snow from earlier in the season will be gone also. The kind of snow that we had the other day is the kind that takes the frost out of the ground, and helps to melt the remaining snow as well. The fog also helps to eat the snow that is on the ground. We are closing in on spring, of that there is no doubt. I am ready for green vistas and balmy temperatures.
My weather instruments are in agreement that we will have fair weather with improving conditions. The weather stick is not quite sure calling for changing conditions by being straight out. Oh well, we can't have everyone in agreement. That would be too much to ask.

Overcast, but Warmer
Little did I know what a rollercoaster we were going to be on in terms of the weather. Yesterday afternoon it snowed a lot, but by this morning the snow had turned to drizzle and fog, so most of the snow is now gone. The temperature has also remained above freezing tonight, and that is most unusual. We do have some wind tonight, and that is bringing us warm air from the south-southwest.
As usual, there is disagreement among my weather prognosticators. My two electronic instruments are calling for fair and improving weather. The weather stick is still saying the weather is going to be inclement. At this point, I am not sure whom to believe. I have heard rumors that tomorrow may be the first day of spring bicycling season. With temperatures approaching the mid0-fifties, I would not be surprised, in fact, I may be out there on mine. We will have to see what happens. Just to note the amount of precipitation is the snow that melted and the rain we had today between the drizzle and fog.

Snow Replaced by Fog & Drizzle
Although it is warm, it is still a dismal start to the day. The fog is as thick as pea soup and combined with the drizzle it is making the snow that fell last night very wet, heavy and sloppy. That snow will go away on its own, particularly if it gets as warm as the prognosticators say it will today and tomorrow.
My electronic instruments and the weather stick have finally reached a consensus. The weather stick is curled down over 90 degrees, and the electronic instruments are calling for inclement weather with a storm warning.

Snow Finally Arrives
The inclement weather that was predicted by red skies for the last three days is finally here. It started about 14:00 hours and has picked up in intensity since then. We have had about 3 inches so far, and it is still snowing. The weather stick has finally got it right. It is curled down indicative of deteriorating weather. The electronic instruments however are not quite sure. They are indicating fluctuating weather wit a tendency to improve. I am just not sure of that. For the overnight, I think I will stick with the weather stick. By the way, travel on the roads is terrible. The side roads like route 133 are plowed, but very slippery and route 2 is wet and slippery. So, be careful out there if you must go out this evening.

The Rollercoaster Returns
For the third morning in a row we have a red sky at dawning. If the sailors are taking warning for red skies then they must be sitting in port a great deal here lately. The weather forecasters are threatening us with some precipitation today, but overall it is supposed to be light and very mixed. The temperature here is below freezing right now, but as the day progresses it is supposed to warm up, and anything that starts out as snow is supposed to change to rain as the temperature warms up above freezing. That is a lot of supposition in my book.
My weather instruments are showing fluctuating weather with a tendency to improve. I suspect that is because the barometric pressure rose overnight to the same level it was yesterday morning and the day before yesterday. The weather stick still has not gotten the news, although it is pointing just slightly up which could be taken to be the same prognostication as the electronic instruments.
I have just checked out the NOAA site at http://www.weather.gov/forecasts/graphical/sectors/conus.php?element=PoP12 and they are calling for a wintry mix starting this morning and continuing all day. I cannot say that any of the prognosticators have it all right, so we will just have to wait and see what shows up over the next 24 hours.

Here We Go Again
Both of the electronic instruments are calling for a storm warning. The High thin Cirrus clouds are moving in from the west, so there is a portent of a storm with them. The weather stick is saying it is going to be nice weather because it is curled up higher than usual. According to one of the forecast models from the NOAA, we will have rain tomorrow. That agrees with my electronic instruments. By tomorrow morning the weather stick may catch up with the new technology.
It was a great day today though. The sun was warm, and the snow just kept on melting. I had several errands to run in town, so I was kept busy most of the afternoon. I was still able to take a 3-mile walk with Bart though. As my daughter said "Fat boy squared went for a walk." It is claimed that I am out of shape, but round is a shape, just not the one I need to be in. I am now working on that very hard.

There has been virtually no wind during the overnight, and as a result the temperature has plummeted to 13.2°F. While not as cold as I have seen it (during this week in 1989 it got down to -20°F) it is still cold. With the sun higher in the sky, it will probably warm up nicely during the day. If it does indeed warm up, I will take Bart for another walk, like I did yesterday. It does feel good to be able to get outside and begin an exercise program to get ready for the bicycling season, that will be here before we know it.
Both of the electronic instruments are calling for continued fair weather, but the weather stick is calling for a change. With the barometer as high as it is I have a tendency to go with the electronic instruments today. Once the sun gets up the weather stick may change its tune as well.

Winds Calm
After this morning's red sky, the winds have calmed down, and the sky has been mostly sunny, although late this afternoon we do have some clouds floating around the area. They do not appear to building into any sort of storm at this point. It has been another very warm day for the time of year, but we can handle that. I was talking with one of the people who is collecting sap, and he said that if this kind of weather does keep up it will be a pretty good Maple Syrup season. I certainly hope so.
All three of my weather indicators are calling for continued fair weather, and from the look of the sky, I would have to agree. Just to note the clouds I talked about at the start of this commentary seem to be dissipating. I know, "If you don't like the weather wait a minute and it will change.” I took Bart for his first walk since my injury, and we both enjoyed the sun and the warmer weather. By the way Maine Maple Sunday is coming up soon (I think it is the fourth Sunday in March, but someone can correct me if I am wrong). Now that winter is drawing to a close we have many things we can get involved in to occupy our time.

Will Sailors Take Warning?
As the photo below shows, there was a very red sky this morning at sunrise (05:30 AM). What does that portend? Both of the electronic instruments are calling for continued fair weather, and the weather stick is straight out indicating some change in the offing for this area. All of this being true, I wonder if the sailors will take warning, or perhaps there is some feature that I am not aware of. I guess that we will have to wait and see. The barometer is definitely up at 30.04 in.Hg, and the temperature finally reached its low of 13.8°F at 06:26 AM.
When I first went outside the sky was absolutely clear, but as I look out of my west window, I can see some clouds on the western horizon. I have now checked several sources, and there does not appear to be any precipitation on the horizon using satellite or radar imaging. I did listen to a weather report this morning and that forecaster was saying that there is a system to our west, but that it was going to move out to sea south of us. That is what I see this morning, and I cannot make more out of it than that. We will just have to see what happens by this afternoon or early evening.

Another Delightful Day
I would have to guess that the sap is certainly flowing now with daytime highs in the low forties and overnight lows below freezing. I may tap a few trees myself next year just to check it out. Our snow pack here in Wilton is almost all gone. There is a little bit of snow on part of my garden plot, and a small pile here and there where it was plowed off the driveway. Other than that, there is virtually no snow at all.
One of my does was bred over the weekend, so if calculation serves me right we should have one set of kids around June 2 and another set around August 4. Ah, just a little something to make life interesting. Right now, I do have some doelings and a couple of wethers for sale from last spring's kids.
All three of my weather indicators are now in agreement, and are calling for continued fair weather. That certainly is something different. Now we will probably have 2 feet of snow just to prove them wrong. We all know that with weather we can never talk in absolutes, because as soon as we do it does something the complete opposite of what is expected.

The Clouds Are Back
Once again the clouds have rolled back in to cover the sky, making it a dismal start to the day. My weather instruments are calling for fair weather and improving conditions. Guess what, the weather stick is not quite so sure, since it is calling for a change. It is straight out indicating fluctuating weather. Looking at the sky I might have to agree with the weather stick. Isn't it nice being able to pick and choose the technology we want to agree with. Of course, the future will prove that technology right or wrong.
There seems to have been a sudden turnaround in the temperature. We have gone from 3.7°F to 23.3°F as our low temperature in less than a week. The high temperature has done the same going from 25.8°F on the first of March to 42.2°F on the fifth. To me that is impressive. From that data I would have to say that spring is on its way. We may yet have a few cold days, but we will survive.. We may even have some more snow, but even that will come and go quickly at this point in the season.

An Almost Spring Day
We have, today, experienced an almost spring day. The temperature has gotten up to a little above 40°F which is positively balmy compared to the last couple of weeks. With the clear skies the temperature has already fallen to 32.1°F. The air is clear and crisp, just the way we like it at this time of year. All three of the weather indicators are calling for fair weather, and compared to what we have had lately it is more that welcome.
I looked at a radar report and did not see anything on the immediate horizon. There is a storm in the middle of the country, but I am not sure when or if it is going to affect us.

Weather Stick Correct
This time all the electronic prognosticators got it right as well as the weather stick. We have had several days where the clouds have moved in and moved out, but we have had no precipitation. During that time the electronic instruments were showing storm warnings or deteriorating weather. The weather stick has continued to show improving or fair weather. I guess that even old technology can get it right sometimes.
I don't know if anyone caught it yesterday or not, but I made an erroneous a statement. I said that it made it above freezing yesterday, but it did not. It made it to 31.8°F, which is not quite the freezing mark. Even though it is windy this morning I think it will make it above freezing today. I should point out the Confucius saying, "A man with a one watch always knows what time it is; a man with two watches is never quite sure." The same can be said for a man with two thermometers. I have one in an alcove on the north side of the house, and the other in the middle of a field on the west side of the house. The one on the north is reading 34°F, and the one on the west side of the house is reading 28.5°F. Go figure!

Up and Down Temperature
It depends on which way you are looking what you see . The sky, when you look west is mostly cloudy, and when you look east is partly cloudy. Since most of our weather moves from west to east I would suspect that we may be in for some inclement weather. My Min/Max thermometer is calling for fair and improving whether, while my weather station console Is calling for fluctuating weather and also improving. The weather stick still does not have a clue and is going along blithely calling for fair weather.
This afternoon it is almost 8°F warmer than it was yesterday afternoon. In fact the high temperature at least made it above freezing today. There has been wind almost all day, and while the temperature may have been warmer it certainly did not feel like it. Welcome to March, and particularly March in Maine.

Below Freezing, But Warmer
From a low of 14.9°F, the temperature has already climbed to 21.5°F. This is significantly warmer than it has been for the past several mornings. This is definitely a move in the right direction . Both of the electronic instruments are indicating a storm warning with deteriorating conditions. Once again, the weather stick has not got the message. It is curled up indicating fair weather. I will continue to accept the electronic instruments prognostication, particularly since the sky is heavily overcast.
This may be a good weekend to review the seeds that I have, and select the peppers and tomatoes that I want to start. This would be the time when we get them going. With any luck at all I am going to have a garden this year.

And It Stayed Below Freezing
I did not get outside to enjoy this day. A friend and I completed a project that we had started about two months ago. Looking at the history from today, I have the feeling that I was much better off staying inside. My wife and I went out for supper, and as we walked to the restaurant, we both noticed that the wind not only had teeth it also had very sharp fangs. I suspect that the goats and sheep were in equally happy spending the day inside the barn, and not dealing with that wind.
The weather stick is calling for fair weather. My other two instruments are predicting a storm warning. Who do we believe? I think this time I will go with the instruments. Just as things changed a very quickly this morning, they are doing so again this evening. The wind chill right now is -2.4°F. It is interesting that the temperature has gone up 0.5°F. I am not quite sure what that means. I guess we will find out in the morning.

Back Below Freezing
Even at 11°F, it did not feel all that cold this morning when I took Bart for his exercise walk. I noticed a couple things this morning. First, there was a woodpecker in the willow tree pounding out a rhythm, and second that the trees finally have the green aura around them signaling that spring is not far off. That second seems to be a little later than usual. In the instrument sector, all three of my prognosticators are in agreement. They are all saying that the weather is fluctuating, but the tendency is for improvement. Right now, I would certainly have to agree with that analysis.
As we continue into March, we will see the migratory birds returning from the southern climes where they have wintered. As I sit here composing this commentary the temperature has already risen almost 2°F. This is showing the strength of the sun at this time of year. I drove to Lewiston yesterday and was impressed by the amount of open water that I saw. If things continue as they are, there should be plenty of open water on April 1. One other note, we did have a snow shower last night, but there was barely enough snow to see on the vehicles this morning.

It Is Above Freezing
Believe it or not the temperature has broken the freezing mark. In fact, it has been so warm this afternoon that I have been able to exercise Bart without getting suited up in jacket, gloves, hat and whatnot. Even though it has been a dull, overcast day, it has still been pleasant. There are areas on the driveway that are beginning to show wet spots, and at this point that is good.
My instruments, once again, are indicating storm warnings, all except the weather stick, that is. It's still thinks we are going to have fair weather. Fair weather or not, next week I'm going to begin planting tomato and pepper seeds in order to get a jump on the season. Two facts that need to be remembered, first, open water fishing starts in 30 days, and second if you didn't plant them last fall peas should go in the ground, if possible, around April 1. There is a message there, fishing season opens and we should start planting gardens on April fool's day, hmmm.

A Warming Trend
It is definitely warmer this morning than it has been for several days. Well, it may not be warmer, but there is no wind so it feels warmer. The current sky conditions are overcast, and my weather instruments are showing a downward or deteriorating tendency with mixed sun and clouds. Even the old weather stick seems to have it right, as it is straight out.
Since my injury back in January, the goats and sheep have been staying in the barn. This has not been a problem for them, first because they get plenty of fresh hay, water and grain, and second because there isn't very much for them to eat outside. The one other reason for them to stay inside is that they have made it necessary for some fence repair to be done before they can go outside again. If there is some moderating temperature during the next couple of weeks that will be accomplished. If there is nothing for them to browse on, they will work on apple trees, pear trees, fir trees, spruce trees and anything else they can get the lovely little teeth on.

A Pretty Day
This has been a pretty, all be it a cold day. The sun has been out most of the day, but it still has not warmed up very much. As I have read the weather maps there is a low pressure system north of us that is pumping the arctic air straight out of Canada, and keeping us cold. The sun right now is shining brightly as I look at the west window, but there are some clouds on the horizon.
There is some disagreement among my weather indicators. The two electronic ones are showing mixed sun and clouds with a downward tendency. The weather stick, on the other hand, has not heard the news, it is pointing up calling for fair weather. As pretty as it looks, and as bright as the sun is right now I think that the electronic instruments are onto something.

Sun is Out
This morning dawned cold, but not as blustery as it has been recently. It has taken a while to get the February summary done, and that is why this posting is a little late. The temperature has not gone up very much yet, but this is March, and we will get there eventually. The birds will get back from wherever they wintered, and the grass will grow and turn green. I don't know when that will happen, but it will.
Earlier this morning my electronic instruments were almost an agreement. The Min/Max thermometer indicated sun with improving whether, while my weather station console indicated mixed sun and clouds with improving whether. Even the weather stick got into the act by curling up indicating improving whether. From what I see out of my windows, I would have to agree with that assessment.
Just to note we did have a snow shower this morning, but there was not enough to measure.

February Summary
This has certainly been a month of extremes. We have had rain, snow, sleet, heat, cold and wind. We have had more sun this month that we have had in some of our previous months. There were nineteen mornings that were either clear or partly cloudy, and there were thirteen afternoons that were either clear or partly cloudy. The month started warm and ended very cold. The expectation would have been warmer weather at the end of the month
