More Planting Accomplished

Gee, I could hardly have missed with this forecast. It has been fantastic outside. I planted Okra, Onions, Bunching Onions, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Beets, Lettuce and Carrots today. This leaves the beans (a number of varieties) and potatoes to be planted directly in the ground, and the tomatoes, peppers and cucurbits to be planted when all danger of frost is past. I know it is not likely at this point, but we could still get snow or at least some heavy frosts before the middle of next month, but I am taking a chance this year that it will not happen from now on.
The daffodils keep getting closer to blossoming. Maybe tomorrow or the next day they will begin.

The Weather Stick Is Up
The other instruments are all indicating a positive tendency toward fair weather as well, and I cannot dispute that. I have heard two things; first, that we are under a fire weather watch, and second that we may be in for some rain and showers for most of next week. As I have prepared my garden, I have noticed that the soil is still fairly moist once you get below the surface, so the problem is the dry vegetation left over from last fall, and not the water table.

Another Good One To Be Outside

How many red skies at dawning does it take to disprove an old saw? We have now had at least three, and still there has been no inclement weather, or weather to make a sailor take warning. I am not saying that it does not happen, but this week it has not happened. We do remember that which we want to prove our myths, and I even use the old saw sometimes to tip the balance of some of my forecasts. For the past few days, it has not held true, so maybe it is the quantity of the sky that is red, and we may need to watch that as well. Whatever the case it does, seem that the clear sky, high barometric pressure and rapidly rising temperature indicate another beautiful day for working outside. Even with the cool nighttime temperatures, the soil is warming up.
To keep things in perspective, one of my weather instruments is indicating a negative tendency with mixed sun and clouds. The other two are indicating a positive tendency with clear weather. The weather stick is happily pointed up, so I will happily call for another nice day. It will be interesting to see what tomorrow brings.
The difference between the wind chill and current temperature is the speed with which the temperature is rising. When I started less than half an hour ago the temperature was 27.3°F, and it is now 34.3°F.

A Good One To Be Outside

I checked on the barometric pressure during the day and it reached a high of 30.48, a record since I have been keeping this database. It was beautiful today. I was able to plant my corn and popcorn. Next are the broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, carrots and beets. If I can get them in tomorrow, and we get our promised rain on Monday, it will make for a great start to the gardening season. We shall get everything we deserve on this one. After last year, we deserve a lot of excellent growing weather, and that is my opinion.
All three of the electronic weather instruments indicate that our weather will remain clear today. The weather stick is pointed up indicating the same thing. I guess I will go with all of the indicators and call for another clear day. This prediction is a copy of this morning's, because I cannot improve on it

Three In A Row

If this were a hockey game, it would be a "Hat Trick". Three days in a row of excellent weather. At 30.45 in.Hg, the barometer is higher than I have ever seen it since I started these observations. This certainly surpasses the 30.20 that was the previous high. I guess that high pressure is definitely in control of our weather. It does appear that the planned planting will be done today. Despite the fact that the temperature has been falling below freezing for the past several nights my hose has not frozen because the ground has warmed up and the portion of the hose that is outside is laying on the ground. Further, the temperature inside the barn, where the rest of the hose is, has not fallen below freezing.
All three of the electronic weather instruments indicate that our weather will remain clear today. The weather stick is pointed up indicating the same thing. I guess I will go with all of the indicators and call for another clear day. Wow!

Another Beautiful Day

I have spent this day outside setting up my "beds" in the garden. It has been marvelous. The temperature was delightful in the mid-sixties, and gentle winds. The barometer is as high as I have seen it. The black flies are out and very active, but with Buzz Off Clothing, I was not bothered by them at all. I have almost all those "beds" demarcated, so that I can plant tomorrow. I checked for peas, and I could not find even one seed, so they have been replanted, and not a moment too soon. Corn, carrots lettuce, onions and beets will go in tomorrow with any luck at all.
The weather stick is up indicating continued fair weather. The other three instruments are also indicating fair weather with no inclement weather in sight for the moment. I will accept that! Outdoor acuities are the order of the weekend. Enjoy it!

Warming Quickly

When I opened things up this morning the temperature was at 24.9°F, and now, barely a half an hour later, it is already up to 32.5°F. It certainly has the appearance that it will be another great day for outdoor activities. I am currently planning to plant a large part of my garden. Only those vegetables adversely affected by low temperatures will not be planted outside. The tomatoes and peppers will be planted inside to get them a good start, and the squashes and cucumbers will wait until later in May to have the seeds put in the ground.
The weather stick is up giving an indication that it will be a good day. All three of the electronic instruments are indicating improving weather with fair, sunny conditions. I cannot ask for better weather than this to get the garden started. A couple more days of sunny weather will warm the ground, and then we need some rain about every 3 days, with a good soaking about once per week, and the gardens should do well.

What A Day!!

This has been a beauty. The temperature has been great for working outdoors, and the wind has just been strong enough to keep the black flies at bay. Yes, the black flies are out and about. I have, as you will note from the photo below tilled the garden. This is the earliest I have gotten the ground prepared for planting. Now, over the next week or so I will get the cold weather crops in the ground. I will also put some weed blocker in place in some areas of the garden. The price of food, like everything else that is moved by motor freight, is going to go up exponentially as a result of the price of fuel. I am going to get mine grown so I do not have to deal with that to the same extent as I did last year.
All the weather indicators are calling for fair weather, and I believe them. At least I am not going to be walking in oatmeal like I did last year.

The Sky has Cleared

With the exception of a few puffy cumulus clouds to the east the sky has cleared. The sunrise was a beautiful shade of red indicating who knows what. This is starting out to be a nice day. It was a bit cool with the temperature near the freezing mark, but it is climbing quickly, and is now nearly 37°F. The barometer is up over yesterday afternoon, the relative humidity is as well and the winds are calm. It appears that this will be a pleasant spring day.
There are some interesting contradictions among the weather instruments. The weather stick is straight indicating a change or fluctuating weather. One of the electronic instruments is calling for cloudy weather, one calling for improvement with sun and the last with mixed clouds and sun, but deteriorating conditions. So, there is no agreement among the electronic prognosticators or the old style weather stick. I am looking for a nice day, and I think we will have one.

The Barometer is Falling

It does appear that we have another front passing though. The wind has increased, but the direction is the same as this morning. I checked on my garlic this morning, and it does appear to be starting to grow, yippee. I did not get the tilling done today, but I did plant a Blue Spruce seedling.
The temperature and barometric pressure are falling quickly, and the wind is over 10 mph right now. The electronic instruments are calling for stormy conditions, but the weather stick is pointed up and calling for fair weather. Taking into consideration the red sky this morning I am going to guess that we are in for some inclement weather in the next twenty-four hours.

Clouds Have Left Again

As I noted yesterday, from the time I started the commentary the clouds parted and the sun came out. This morning the sky is clear, although there was a little red in the east before the sun came up. The sun continues to rise earlier and earlier, and I need my flashlight less and less when I take Bart out in the morning. When I started this commentary the temperature was 29.6°F, and now it is 29.3°F. Noting the temperature it did drop below freezing, but not by much. With clear skies it should rebound nicely.
The weather stick is slightly up, again indicating fair weather. Two of the three electronic instruments are indicating sunny weather with an improving tendency. The third instrument is indicating cloudy weather. I suspect from the radar, the sky conditions, the barometer (which is rising) and the relative humidity I can agree that we should have a nice day.

Some Sun, some Showers

This morning we had quite a bit of sunshine, but this afternoon the clouds have returned bringing with them some off and on showers. There has not been enough rain to measure at this point. The temperature did climb into the mid-sixties, and currently it is in the mid-fifties. The wind has picked up from the southwest, and it has a damp, raw feel to it.
The weather stick is pointed up, again forecasting nice weather. The three electronic instruments are indicating rain. With the look of the sky, the direction of the wind and the relative humidity I would need to agree with the electronic instruments. Just to show how quickly things change, I finished that statement and the sun came out. Well, that just proves that none of us know what will happen from one minute to the next.

A Bit More Rain Overnight

When I went out to do the chores yesterday evening it was raining, but we did not have a lot of rain. When I took Bart for his walk this morning it had stopped raining, and the clouds were beginning to dissipate. Right now the sun is out, and the temperature is rising rapidly. With this kind of weather it will not be long before it will be necessary to mow the lawn. I have noticed that there are several farms where the ground has been plowed, and made ready for planting. I am going to get my garden prepared this week, and probably plant some of the "cold weather" crops like lettuce, beets and carrots.
The weather stick is down and indicating continued foul weather. All three of the electronic instruments are indicating rain, but the sun is out, so I will suggest that we are in for a change. It looks like that change will be for the better.

Now it is Cloudy

The rain did stop around noon, but the clouds did not move out. They are still very much in evidence. It is still cool, although not below freezing. Once again, the best description is a dismal day, punctuated with showers. The past four days have been enjoyable, meeting old friends and making new ones, but I am glad it is over, and all the officers of the Grand York Rite Bodies have been installed.
The weather stick has finally caught up with the rest of the instruments in predicting foul weather. Sometimes it is just slow.

It's Raining

The required rain is falling here. The temperature is rising rapidly, and the relative humidity is also. There is no wind associated with this system at this point. The old saw at this point, and it is hopeful only, is, "Rain before seven, stop by eleven." I just looked at the radar, and it appears that it may be possible for us to have some very nice weather later in the morning.
All three of the electronic instruments are indicating rain and foul weather. The barometer is falling, but the weather stick is stubbornly pointed up, and indicating fair weather. I do not believe the weather stick or the old saw. At this point, I will put my trust in the modern technology, because that is what I see happening outside.

Not Quite Pleasant

Today has been overcast and threatening since I left early this morning. By the time we reached mile 63 on the Maine Turnpike it had started to rain. In Portland today we had showers off and on all day. Here in Wilton any showers we had were not enough to register on the rain gauge. It is still overcast, and we may yet receive some sky juice before the night is over. It has been basically a dismal, damp and raw day, and we still need enough rain to wet the vegetation from last year to reduce the fire danger. Right now the lawns and flower gardens need a drink too.
The weather stick still has no clue to what the weather is going to do. Two of the electronic instruments are calling for a change with deteriorating conditions. The third electronic instrument is saying that we will have rain, and I tend to agree with that assessment. The one indicator that has tipped the balance for me is the red sky we had this morning. I would therefore guess that we might have some rain, but certainly cloudy sky overnight

Not Quite Freezing

So far this morning (04:45 AM) the temperature has remained above freezing, but not by much. There are some stars in the sky, which are visible, although there are some clouds. The barometer has fallen a bit, and the relative humidity is up, so it does feel a bit more humid than it has over the past few days. The sunrise has not yet started, so I do not know if the sky will be red or not.
The three electronic instruments are calling for a change in the weather, and deteriorating conditions. The weather stick is pointed up indicating fair conditions. With the changes that have occurred in the atmosphere, I tend to feel that we are in for a change. Time will tell.

Still spring

The temperature rose again into spring-like regions today. It remained clear until around noon, and then the nimbostratus clouds moved in to take up residence in the sky. As we traveled from Portland this afternoon, I did note that the forsythia was in bloom along the way south of Auburn. We also saw a rabbit on the road this morning that ran off into the ditch. I have some forsythia in bloom here too.
The electronic instruments and the weather stick are reporting the same forecast as they did this morning. I am not quite so sure that fair weather is in the offing for us because the sky was quite red this morning. I think that we may be in for a change, but what do I know?

A Return to Colder Climes

The temperature has indeed fallen through the floor this morning. It has done what it does every spring, given us hope that winter was indeed over, and then sneaks back in to surprise us with some winter like chill. The best thing is that it will not last. A morning or two like this and the temperature will rebound into warmer territory. Right now, the sky looks like a sheet of black velvet with tiny holes and a strong light behind it. It is gorgeous. The wind is calm, and with the clear sky, it is no wonder that the temperature fell as far as it did. It may, or may not be at its low, but I will make the appropriate change this evening when I get back from my meeting.
Just as it was last night, all the electronic instruments and the weather stick are indicating fair weather, and I will stick my neck out and say the same. It is difficult to argue when all the indicators say the same thing.

Overcast Gone

By the time I left for Portland the overcast was mostly dissipated. The sun came out and the weather cleared. It was a delightful day. The wind became a gentle zephyr, the temperature rose into the mid-sixties and the skies were clear. The temperature now is lower than it was this morning, and at this rate, it may freeze. It is already down to 35.4, and it has another six hours to go. I will be going to Portland again tomorrow for the second of the three Grand York Rite Masonic sessions. Today was the Grand Council of Maine, tomorrow is the Grand Chapter of Maine, and Sunday and Monday are the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar Sessions. These are all good men doing good work for some excellent philanthropic organizations, along with the Masons in the state.
The weather stick is pointed up again, and the three electronic weather stations are indicating fair weather. With the clear skies and all this instrumentation, who am I to argue?

Gone to Overcast

I need to be in Portland this morning by 08:00, so I was out early to observe what I could. The sky, surprisingly, is overcast, but with a barometric reading over 30.2 inches, I do not believe it will rain. The temperature is already starting its pre-dawn fall, and is at 40.2°F. That is cool, but it is not below freezing. By the way, all 8 of our crocuses were in full bloom last night.
All three of the electronic instruments are indicating sunny weather, with no indication to deteriorate. The weather stick is saying the same. The overcast above us says we may get some precipitation, but I just am not sure. With the way the temperature is falling (now at 40.2°F at 04:54), I suspect that the cloud cover is dissipating, so I would have to say that we will have clear skies as well today.

Virtually No Clouds

If you looked really hard you could see a few clouds on the western horizon, and a few on the eastern horizon. The sky is, with those exceptions clear. It has been warm, with low humidity and gentle breezes that ranged from calm to around 11 miles per hour. Just enough wind to keep the black flies off, and they are coming out to visit.
All the instruments and the weather stick are predicting fair weather for now, and I think I need to agree with that.

A Few Clouds in the East

There were just a few clouds on the eastern horizon that gave us the red sky this morning. I do not think it portends any foul weather for the near future. If the wind was out of the south or east I might think differently, but it is out of the north and northwest. The sky is mostly clear, and the wind is variable and gentle. It has now been over a week since we have had a low temperature below freezing. I hesitate to say it, but winter may actually be at an end. While I was out for the bicycle ride yesterday, I noted that one of the farmers has tilled his cornfield, and prepared it for planting. If my garden spot is dry enough I will be doing the same in the next week. As I noted in an earlier commentary the garden may go in earlier than it has for the past several years, and that may well be a good thing for all of us that garden or farm.
My weather stick is pointed up this morning indicating fair weather today. All of the electronic instruments are indicating changing weather with a tendency to improve. This is quite a change from last night's indications. From the look of the sky, the improving barometer, low relative humidity and light winds I would tend to agree that we will have some pleasant weather today.

It Looks Strange Outside

The filtered sun looks very eerie. It is not bright and has the appearance of shining through frosted glass. The humidity is so low that if any precipitation were to fall from the altostratus clouds it would dry up before it hit the ground. The wind has been blowing constantly and with considerable force all day. In fact, three of us went for a bicycle ride this noon and we felt the effects of that wind. I know I was being blown all over the road, and the headwind was very difficult to deal with.
All three electronic instruments are indicating deteriorating conditions with a potential for stormy weather. The weather stick is pointed up, so it does not have a clue. At the very least, I would say that these blustery conditions will prevail.

A Carbon Copy

It looks like this is a repeat of yesterday's weather. We still have had no rain despite the clouds in the area. It is not quite as windy as it was yesterday. There has been no rain, and with the clouds starting to break up, I do not think there will be any today. The weather appears to be remaining unsettled.
The weather stick is pointed up indicating some improvement in the weather. The electronic instruments are indicating a mix of sun and clouds with a tendency to remain unsettled. I am not sure what to believe, but unsettled seems to be the order of the day.

Not Much Sun

As has been the case for the past several days, the clouds have taken center stage in the weather. The other thing we are having quite a bit of is wind. The wind direction has been quite variable, but it has been there nonetheless. The temperature topped out at just over 66°F. We have had no rain today, but the weather has been quite blustery.
The weather stick has made it into positive territory, and is now pointed up. The electronic instruments are now showing mixed clouds and sun with no tendency to change. Therefore, if I read all this correctly we are going to remain in this blustery pattern for a while longer.

Moon and Stars Shine

When I stepped outside this morning the moon and some stars greeted me. The sky was not completely clear, but it was better than it has been for a while. We had no rain overnight. I noticed on my willow trees and some of the maples that the leaves are out. If the old timers are to be believed this would be the time to go fishing, since the leaves are about the size of a mouse's ear. I will definitely need to put that to the test some time this week.
The weather stick is still straight out, and still indicating unsettled weather. The electronic instruments are taking the same tack they did last night with two of them indicating improving weather with sun, and one indicating clouds. The sky was tinged with red when I was first out this morning, so I guess I will stick with the forecast of unsettled weather again today.

Trace of Rain

I guess it all depends on where you were today as to how much rain you got. At this location, we had a couple of showers that barely wet the pavement on the road. The best we can manage then is a trace. The ever-present overcast skies are still with us, so we may yet get a bit more rain before they move out. We still need to have last Autumn's foliage wet down a bit more to help prevent fires from breaking out and causing real problems.
The weather stick continues straight out, indicating unsettled weather, as I understand it. Two of the three electronic instruments are indicating improving weather with sun, and the last is calling for cloudy weather. I guess that I will stick with what the sky and weather stick are showing, and call it generally unsettled conditions.

It's Looking Like Rain!

If I were to suspect anything this morning, it would be that the maple sap-collecting season is over. For the past several mornings, the temperature has been above freezing, and the afternoon temperature has been well above 40°F. It is overcast again this morning and the relative humidity is elevated. The wind has been gusty to around 10 miles per hour since midnight. There are some light patches in the clouds as I look to the west, but I am not sure if those are truly breaks in the clouds or just places where it is looking to rain again.
The weather stick is straight out this morning indicating a change in the weather. Two of the electronic instruments are calling for improving conditions with sunshine, and one is indicating cloudy weather. With those as indicators, I am going to stick with my suggestion of yesterday evening that the weather will remain unsettled.

The Clouds Won't Give Up!

This has not been the prettiest Easter I have seen, but we did not have rain until very late this afternoon. The showers we had were not heavy enough to record on either the electronic or the analog rain gauge, so we had a trace of precipitation. It has remained overcast, and that appears to be continuing. So, on the whole the day turned out to be not as clear, warm or pleasant as I had forecast. I blew another one, and so did the electronic instruments.
Two of the electronic instruments are indicating clear weather with improving conditions. One is indicating rain, and the weather stick is straight, up from its morning down. From that I would suspect that it is indicating a change in the weather, but improving. I have no idea how to call this one, but I will suggest that the weather will remain unsettled for now.

Changes Afoot

Happy Easter! For those who celebrate this Christian Holy Day there is no better way than with some sun, warm temperatures, and light breezes. That should put everyone in a celebratory mood for this Holiest day in the Christian Calendar. We finally have some crocuses up and ready to bloom, and if the light is right I will include a picture with this afternoon's commentary.
The weather stick has taken its usual morning stance of pointing down. The electronic instruments are all showing mixed sun and clouds with a tendency to improve. We did not have any more rain here overnight, so I guess I blew that one.

And The Storm Clouds Gathered

We have finally had some rain out of the storm clouds that gathered overnight. I did try to do a bit of fishing, and I caught absolutely nothing. Once again it appears that the water was a bit too high, and, with the rain in the mountains, too fast. While I was fishing it was raining, which probably did not help. The sun broke through for a few minutes this afternoon and drove the temperature from 47 to 57 in about a half an hour's time.
The weather stick finally got the message and is pointed down. All the rest of the electronic instruments are calling for rain or deteriorating conditions. It does look like there are still some storms around, so we may yet get some more rain.

Fire Danger Relief?

This is the weekend, so there must be inclement weather. That certainly is the way it seems. It is not raining here yet, but the sky is overcast, the barometer is down and the relative humidity is up. It did not freeze last night, and the temperature is already on the rise, therefore any precipitation that falls will be as rain. I have taken a look at the composite radar, and there is rain at the boundary between Vermont and New Hampshire that appears to be moving our way for later this morning. It is moving quickly, so it may not take long to get here.
All the electronic instruments are predicting deteriorating conditions and rain this morning. The weather stick is almost straight with a slight downward bend, so it is predicting a change with deteriorating conditions as well. We need the rain, so I am going to be hopeful that all these prognosticators are correct.

Cloudy in the West

There is a line of clouds to our west, and I am not sure what that portends. It has been warm today, a good day to get outside and start on some yard clean-up. The grass is finally starting to grow in earnest, as are the flowers. The animals are quite pleased to be outside looking for some fresh greenery on which to browse.
The weather stick is pointed up and calling for continued fair weather. All the electronic instruments are singing a different tune. They are all calling for storms to pay a call. I looked at one of the composite radar sites, and it is showing some storms quite close to us, as well as some others that are farther to the west. Most of these appear to be showers of fairly short duration, but we will take what we can get at this point. We do need it.

Clouds Clearing Out

There were just a few clouds on the eastern horizon this morning. The full moon in the west was gorgeous, big, round and yellow. For some reason, at 36 degrees, it was warm enough to take Bart for his morning walk without a jacket or gloves. The buds on the apple trees and maple trees are beginning to expand like it is spring, and I guess maybe it is. Last night as I drove home I heard "peeper" frogs singing along McCrillis Corner Road. It was not a chorus as one can hear as the weather warms, but there were a few.
The electronic weather instruments are indicating mixed weather with a tendency to improve. The weather stick is straight, and indicating a change. I guess that improving weather is the order of the day, and that is all right. We still could use a bit of rain to moisten the left over vegetation from last fall, but we will get what we will get.

Hit or Miss Showers

I went to town and drove through a couple of showers that were enough to get the roads wet, but at this location we have not had enough rain to measure. The thunderheads are around, so you might get a shower and then you might not. It has been windy this afternoon, and seems to be continuing to be so. We have had sun off and on most of the day, but it has been intermittent.
The weather stick still has not gotten the news that we are having some inclement weather. The other instruments have all changed to predictions of storms. With the clouds and showers around I would guess we will have some rain before it is all over.

Very Light Shower

When I took Bart for his morning constitutional, I noted that there were some drops of rain on the vehicles in the dooryard. There was not enough to measure in either the analog or the electronic rain gauge. The sky is overcast and the temperature is high enough that if anything falls it will be rain. I looked at the radar image this morning and it appears that the rain that was present last night in New York has dried up before it got here. There are still some showers, but I am not sure if they will make it to this area or not.
The weather stick is pointed up, but only slightly. This indicates, to me, a change, but in a positive direction. The electronic instruments are indicating stormy weather. With the overcast sky, I tend to agree with the electronic instruments this time.

Is the Bubble Bursting?

It would appear from the cloud cover, a decrease of over 0.1 inches of barometric pressure and the red sky of this morning that we may be in for some foul weather. That is all right because at this point we do need some rain on the surface as I said this morning to quell the fire danger. We have had something else happen today. The temperature at this location has exceeded 73°F. We have not seen that since last year. I went out to the garden today to check on the garlic and peas, and there has been no growth yet. Yes, I am getting anxious.
The weather stick either has not gotten the news or it does not care, but it is pointed up, calling for fair weather. Two of the three electronic units are calling for deteriorating conditions with mixed sun and clouds. The other is still calling for fair weather. If we add to that the red sky of this morning, I would have to suggest that we will probably see rain sometime over the next twenty-four hours.

Still Higher Pressure

Sooner or later the bubble will burst. The pressure is even higher than it was yesterday afternoon, so for now high pressure is definitely in control of our weather. The red sky this morning, even without any clouds to speak of may tell a different story. The clear sky to the west gave us a great view of an orange moon setting as a very large ball. It is full or nearly so (I just checked, it is full tomorrow.) This should be another warm day, like yesterday. Once again, though, it would be a good idea to have a little rain to quell the fire danger, which is getting quite high again.
The weather stick is pointed up, but only slightly. The other weather instruments are all calling for the continuation of fair weather, and with the sky as clear as it is, I tend to agree, at least for now.

Very High Pressure (30.28)

The barometric pressure topped out today at 30.28 which is one of the highest barometric pressures I have seen. It has warmed up very nicely. The animals are outside, and enjoying the search for fresh grass. They are beginning to find some too. All the weather prognosticators at this location are calling for continued fair weather, and I am not going to argue. The only questionable indicators are the mares' tails and mackerel scales in the sky. That usually portends some foul weather in the next 24 hours or so.

High Pressure In Control

With a barometric reading over 30.2 in.Hg, you can be assured that we have a dome of high pressure over us. As I stepped out with Bart at 05:00 this morning two things were obvious. One was the absence of clouds from the sky, but the rosy fingered dawn in the east, and two the frost on the ground. I was a bit surprised to see the weather stick slightly elevated. It also was not as cold as it has been the last few mornings. We should have some good solar heating again today with the clear skies.
All of the weather prognostication equipment, new and old, are calling for the fair weather to continue. I think we can handle that.

Not a 30, but a 40-Degree Shift

It is truly significant when we go from 22.8°F to 63.3°F that is greater than 40°F. That is what we have done today. It has been a great day to be and work outside. My daughter and I did get several sets of hooves trimmed along with some other tasks. There is no snow anywhere on the property, and even the bog at the foot of the hill is open. Right now, it looks like everything is going to be moving earlier than I have seen it in several years, and that includes fishing, gardening and lawn care. This is unreal.
All of the weather instruments are calling for continued fair weather. The barometer is up the weather stick is up and the spring flowers are up, so who am I to argue.

Another 34 Degree Spread

Our temperature has dropped almost 34 degrees overnight. The clear skies certainly contributed to that precipitous fall. That allowed much of the heat from yesterday's sun to radiate into space, thereby cooling the atmosphere. We have started the day with continued clear skies, which should allow the sun to heat things up again. I wonder if the Maple Syrup producers are continuing to have good sap production as a result of the fluctuation in the temperatures. At some point, the Maine Department of Agriculture will give us some indication.
There is very little to report on the instrumental portion of the report today. All of the instruments, excluding the weather stick, are calling for continued fair weather. The weather stick is straight indicating a change in the weather. The only change that I can see taking place this morning is nighttime darkness to daytime light, but maybe it knows something I don't.

34 Degree Temperature Shift

Yes, we had a temperature rise of over 34 degrees today. It really was quite nice, and very appropriate for the time of year. As I looked around my yard today, I see that there are tiger lilies, crocuses and daffodils pushing up out of the ground. The next thing to check is the garden to find out if the peas and garlic made it through the winter, and have started to come up. I have some peppers planted, and my seeds have been ordered for the tomatoes, okra, other peppers and potatoes. The possibility of a good garden is beginning to loom large. There are a few things that have to happen though. One is that we need the right amount of rain and sun, two, the temperature needs to be warm enough and, three, the goats need to stay on their side of the fence. I am not asking too much am I?
All of my weather indicators, electronic and weather stick are calling for fair weather and I must say that when they all agree like this they are usually right and it is futile to disagree with them.

Back to Sub-freezing

I have waited almost 45 minutes to start this report because the temperature had not reached its overnight low. Now, at 06:40 I do believe it has, since the sun is now up and hopefully beginning to warm things up. As the saying goes, "It is always coldest before the dawn." The clouds of yesterday are almost all gone, and last night when I stepped outside the stars were, for the most part, shining brightly. There were some clouds on the southeastern horizon this morning along with a light red sky. I do not believe that the red sky will keep the sailors in port today.
The weather instruments this mooring are all showing improving tendencies with fair weather. The weather stick is straight indicating a change, and my subjective view is that the change will be for the better. We will know this afternoon if all these indicators are correct.

Cool and Raw

This has been another one of those dank and dismal days. The promise was that it would clear off and we would have a decent day. That did not happen. The prospects right now are for a cold overnight with temperatures in the mid to lower twenties. That the temperature never got above forty-five today it would not surprise me to see temperatures that low. Maybe tomorrow we can salvage the second half of the weekend. We can live in hope.
The weather stick is pointed up indicating a return to fair weather, and two of the three electronic instruments are saying the same thing. The third instrument is calling for a change in the weather, but all its icon is showing is clouds, so I do not know whether that is good or bad. Three of the four are calling for fair or improving weather, so I guess we can go with that.

Windy and Warmer

This morning we are having some wind and warmer temperatures. For the first time in a while, the overnight low is above freezing by a considerable amount. When I was out at 04:45, to observe the sky, there were no stars visible, and the cloud cover was nearly complete. The air still feels very heavy, and it feels like it is going to rain. That is just my subjective perception.
By way of confirmation, the weather stick is pointed down and all the electronic instruments are showing a deteriorating tendency with a forecast of stormy weather. When all the indicators are in this position, who am I to argue? Just to note, by the time I finished my report yesterday afternoon the rain was starting to drip off the carriagehouse roof. I, like the expert prognosticators, have gotten one right. Yea Me!

Warmer Than Yesterday

It was a warmer low this morning and a warmer high this afternoon, and that is good. It certainly shows that spring is on its way, even slowly. It has been overcast most of the day, with the clouds becoming thicker and lower as the day progressed. I still think we are going to get some rain out of this system at some point. In point of fact, I have just looked at both the NEXRAD Composite Radar and the NOAA Radar out of Gray Maine, and they both show that there is light rain just about on top of us. Be prepared, because it is coming.
The Weather Stick is up, but only slightly, which is not a ringing endorsement for fair weather. All of the other electronic weather stations are indicating stormy weather coming. I agree, and I would not be surprised to see rain by the time I get this finished and posted.

Warming Trend?

We are about 7 degrees warmer this morning than we were yesterday at the same time. The clouds have, however, moved back in to cover all but the very eastern sky. The ground is still soft and spongy, but there is no water lying on top of it. Every year since we have been here we have sand in our water for a couple of days at the end of mud season. Usually that occurs in mid to late April. This year it happened on April third. That is very early for an end to mud season. Maybe I can get the garden prepared early this year, if we don't have too much rain.
Speaking of rain, the weather stick is not sure what we will have, so it is prediction some change in the weather. Two of the electronic instruments are predicting fair weather, and the third says change is in the offing, The way it feels outside, and the sky cover lead me to side with the weather stick and suggest that a change is in the offing, and it will be foul.

Still Cool and Raw

Today we have had a mix of sun and clouds, and the only sunshine we had came when spaces between the clouds happened to be where the sun was in the sky. There were not many of those. The weather stick is pointed up, but just barely, so I would suspect that it is not sure of improving weather, and from the look of the sky, I am not either. The electronic instruments are the ones that are going on blithely predicting that the weather will improve and become fair. One of those (and I now have 3) is indicating a storm coming, so I, like them, am completely confused.

A Bit Cool and A Bit Raw

The thing that struck me as I stepped outside with Bart this morning was the amount of humidity in the cool air. That was evidenced by the ease with which I could see my breath. From the time I went out at 05:00 until now (06:00 hours), the sky has gone from partly to mostly cloudy. I have looked at the satellite, and over us, there are some clouds, but no specific front that I could detect. To the west of us there seems to be a major front that may make it in here for tomorrow with some very heavy weather.
The Indicators for Today and Tomorrow
The weather stick and one of the electronic instruments are calling for unsettled or stormy weather, while the other is calling for fair weather or improving conditions. Based on what I can see and the satellite view I think that conditions will start out fair and deteriorate over the next 24 hours. Whether we get rain or snow will depend solely on the track of the storm, hence the temperature.

Maybe Spring Hasn't Left

We are back on the usual springtime weather Rollercoaster, without a doubt. We did spring up over 30 degrees today, and it was quite pleasant. A great deal of the snow did melt during the day, the driveway is clear, and the roads are dry. The snow, sleet and rain that collected in my rain gauge have melted giving us an additional 0.35 inches of precipitation. When the total is compared with my analog rain gauge, the two are equal at about 1.1 inches for the month so far. Gee, I am glad I put that old one out there as a check against the new.
The clouds cleared out completely this morning, but over the last couple of hours they have moved back in, but a different type. These appear to be altocumulus as opposed to the stratocumulus that we had this morning. Right now, the weather stick and the electronic instruments are indicating fair weather with a tendency to improve. The way things look outside with the clouds appearing to break up and the sun shining through I would have to agree with that. That said, be prepared for the foot of snow overnight. I have to cover all the bases. Talk about wishy-washy.

Is Winter Really Back?

As I stepped outside with Bart this morning at 04:45 hours, I had to be very careful because of the ice and snow on the steps. There was a fresh coat of ice and snow on the ground, totaling about an inch. The roads appeared to be mostly wet with some ice at the edges. I noticed that the stones in my lawn were not covered, and in fact were dry because of the heat they have absorbed over the last week or so. Furthermore, it was precipitating, and I had the sense that it was drizzle mixed with a few snowflakes. Even with my "Headlight”, it was still too dark to make a good determination of what the precipitation type was.
The weather stick is pointed down this morning indicating continued foul weather. The electronic instrumentation shows fluctuating weather with a tendency to improve. The sky is still overcast, so there is no sunrise to act as a tiebreaker. This actually is not unusual to have storms like this at this time of year, it is just a little disheartening when we are starting to think about growing things and garden preparation, but it will pass. It always does.

A Mixture

By the time I finished my commentary this morning we had 0.02 inches of rain. In addition, it did rain that hard. Since then we have had a spring-like mix with snow, sleet and rain both mixed and alone. Right now, 16:40 hours, we are having a mix of snow and rain. This mix has been the predominant feature all day. It has netted us a total, so far, of 0.3 inches of precipitation.
As you can see by the photo below, the weather stick has caught up with the rest of the weather forecasting instrumentation. It is finally saying that we are in for some inclement weather, and indeed, we are. I tend not to fly in the face of the obvious.

A Gray Day

The sky is overcast, and the ground is wet. Right now, my rain gauge has not measured any precipitation, but the air feels very "heavy". It does feel like it is going to rain before long. One of the weather stations not too far from me has recorded 0.01 inches of precipitation during the early morning hours, but we may not have gotten anything from that shower.
The electronic instruments are all calling for inclement weather with deteriorating conditions. The weather stick has not gotten the word, and is pointed up indicating continued fair weather. Usually in the morning it points down, even when the weather is clear, but this morning with the weather obviously deteriorating it is pointed up and not just a little bit.
At just a little above freezing it is raw outside, and most uncomfortable, which is why Bart and I did not linger when we went out for our morning constitutional. From what I heard of the weather this morning, the next couple of days will not be very pleasant with a combination of rain, snow and cold temperatures.

What portent now?

The sky is overcast, the Min/Max thermometer is calling for fair weather, as is the weather stick with an improving tendency, and the weather station is calling for mixed weather with a deteriorating tendency. Who do you believe? I don't know!. I am guessing that we are in for some inclement weather.
This has definitely been an interesting day. We have done some things that will prove out down the road, and we should enjoy.
Today we have had a group effort on a project that Guinness would be proud of. We will see how it all turns out. This has been a pleasant day, even though the sun has not been the predominant feature. The temperatures have been quite spring-like. All i9n all a typical early spring day.

Below Freezing Again

Bart and I went for our morning constitutional, and the sky was clear and star studded. I used to live in a city, and the number and clarity of the stars always strike me visible here in Maine. We do not seem to have the pollution that is found in the city. Oh, well, I ramble on. I did go fishing yesterday, and, because of the wind and high water from the storm on Saturday, I caught nothing. At least I got to wet a line. Now, I will wait until the water goes down a bit before trying it again.
The sky was clear last night, and that allowed radiational cooling to allow the temperature to drop below freezing. Right now, it has already started to rise, and it is up over 2°F. All the weather indicators, electronic, weather stick and sky, are showing a tendency toward fair weather. The forecasters were calling for an inclement mix through Wednesday, as of last night. Right now NOAA is calling for us to have some rain by this afternoon, and it is going to remain cool. We shall have to see what happens.

A Bit Cool and Windy, but Good

The sky became crystal clear after this morning's fair weather clouds, or the remnants of yesterday's storm. It has been quite windy on the streams and rivers where I fished, and I could not find the right lure or fly to entice any of the fish to bite. I have heard that fishing does not get very productive until the leaves are about the size of a mouse's ear and the black flies are out in earnest.
All of my weather indicators are calling for continued fair weather, and who am I to disagree at this point. I have heard rumors and rumblings that we may have snow on Tuesday. Also, it is supposed to get quite cold tonight (in the low to mid twenties). Just a little something to keep us on our toes.

And the Rain Has Gone

Overnight the storm broke up, and some much cooler and drier air moved in. It is quite pleasant outside, and the sun is warming it up very nicely. This looks like it is going to be a great day to be outside. I do not believe that it will be a great day to do any yard work simply because the ground is still too wet, but within a week, we should be able to get the necessary work done to get our lawns cleaned, rolled and prepared for the summer.
The ice is out on many of the lakes and ponds, as well as most of the rivers and streams in the southern part of the state, so with the weather indicators calling for fair weather it is time to go fishing. Remember, "Time spent fishing cannot be deducted from a man's life."

Finally Some Rain

The rain did not start in earnest until around 15:00 hours, but it has continued until now (17:33) The old technology (weather stick) has finally caught up with the modern technology (weather stations) and is indicating inclement weather. Once again, it has been a warm day with temperatures rising into the sixties. I guess that these April showers will ultimately bring us May flowers and hopefully early August Tomatoes. Hey, I can dream can't I?
I am a fair weather fisherman, and I do not like to fish in the rain, although some people have told me that is the best time to fish. I like to be warm and comfortable. I am the same way with my bicycling. Riding in the rain is not fun to me, so I ride in the sunshine and warm weather. Bart and I did not go for a walk today either.
The prognosticators did get it right, by the way, for today's weather. I hope they get it right for tomorrow's as well. I do plan to wet a line tomorrow, if the weather gods co-operate.

Another Red Sky

It appears that we may have a real portent for some inclement weather this morning. The weather stick is looking for a change, since it is straight out, and all the electronic weather gear is showing a tendency for deteriorating weather. Even though the temperarture has dipped just below freezing, there was no frost, only dew on the grass and vehicles. We have had no precipitation yet, but the folks that are paid for that sort of thing are calling for showers and thundershowers today. I would have to agree since all of my indicators are calling for the same.
Usually I decry the arrival of inclement weather, but right now the surface of the ground could use a bit of moisture to quell the fire danger. It is not necessary to see more of the landscape charred by fire. Once the chores are done, I do intend to wet a line to see if I can entice a few fish to join me for dinner. Of course, they will be the main course.
