We Did Have A Shower
It did rain accompanied by a whole lot of thunder and lightning between two and three o'clock this afternoon. We, apparently, did not get the worst of it, since someone reported to me that it hailed in Augusta. Not long after the storm was over the sky cleared and the relative humidity fell significantly. That can be noted by the very low dew point this evening.
It may take a while for the weather instrumentation to catch up with the weather. When I came up here all three instruments were showing rain. Now the Weather Station Console is indicating improving conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. The weather stick points straight out indicating unsettled weather at best.

It Is Not Raining Yet
It is difficult to believe, but it s not raining here in Wilton this morning. We did have a little more rain after my report of last night, and that brings us to just 0.07 inches short of nine inches of rain for the month of June. This is three inches ahead of last year when we had 6.3 inches of rain for the month, and today is not yet over. It is no wonder my garden is a mud hole. It has not yet had a chance to dry out. We wonder why the cost of locally grown food is high. When we as small growers cannot get our gardens in the supply goes down, and the cost goes up. This is the economics of weather.
The weather indicators and instrumentation all agree. The weather stick points down and there is no surprise there. The Weather Station console, the Men/Max Thermometer and the remote weather station are all predicting rain today. We will know soon enough if that is indeed going to be the case or not.

Thunderstorms Walk About
At about 18:30 it began to rain. Will it never stop? Without destroying my equipment I cannot mow, nor can I till, nor can I trim. I cannot cut down the burdock, nor any of the other weeds. This is ridiculous! When I can get out in the morning it is so wet that the equipment cannot cut through the water. By the time it dries out enough to do anything it is raining again. What am I to do?
The weather stick points slightly down indicating the usual unsettled weather. Well that is a big duh. The remote weather station is indicating a forecast of cloudy weather. The Min/Max Thermometer is indicating deteriorating conditions with rain, and so is the Weather Station Console. Rain, Rain Go Away. Come Again Some Other Day.

Humid, Foggy And Overcast
This morning we would probably do better with gills. The humidity is approaching 100%, so it is as if we are breathing water. As I sit here in my chair I feel that I will leave a puddle when I get up, I am perspiring that much. When the weather gets this uncomfortable it makes it difficult to even think, let alone compose some sort of cogent prose.
The weather stick points down again indicating the continuation of the weather we have been having. The remote weather station forecasts clouds for the moment. The Min//Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console both forecast deteriorating conditions with rain in the offing. If you liked yesterday, you should love today.

It's More Humid This Evening
At about 13:30 it started to rain. This rain has continued all afternoon and into the evening. I started to mow the lawn, but that came to a screeching halt because of the rain.
All the instruments are forecasting continued deteriorating conditions with rain. I just do not have anything else to say about it.

It Is Humid This Morning
The humidity is in the high eighties, but has come down a little since I started this. The barometric pressure is steady, so I would expect to see fair weather since it is over 30 inches of mercury. It does not feel like it will be a nice day though. I do not know if it will rain, but the chance of some pop-up thundershowers is high.
The weather stick, as usual, points down, and that is its normal situation at this time of the morning. The Min/Max Thermometer and the remote weather station seem to feel that unsettled weather with a mix of sun and clouds is the order of the day. The Weather Station Console is the only instrument predicting sunny weather. I would like to believe that, but the way the air feels I cannot. I feel that the atmosphere will remain unstable today, and we have a very good chance of having a shower this afternoon. That said it will probably be a beautiful day. Who Knows?

One Small Sprinkle
There was not enough rain to measure from the sprinkle this morning. There have been cumulonimbus clouds around all day, but there has been no rain here. West of h ere we could see rain falling around Mt. Blue, and in other areas, so what showers were around were isolated and very scattered.
Now we have some very different responses by the instrumentation. The weather stick points up, so that is no surprise considering the type of day we had. The Weather Station Console and remote weather station are both calling for improved conditions with sun. The Min/Max Thermometer, which usually agrees with the Weather Station Console, is calling for deteriorating conditions, and a mix of sun and clouds. This should be interesting overnight.

Is It Really Not Raining?
I can actually hear some birds singing thins morning. I cannot identify them, but they are singing. It really is not raining. I am shocked. That does not mean that it will not rain, just that at this moment (05:30 hours) it is not raining. I realize that it is probably too much to ask for, but if we can now get some sun to dry things like garden spots and lawns out something can be accomplished outside. I might even be able to cut some wood. Wow, what a concept!
The weather stick, appropriately, points down, and we all know what that means, if it means anything. My other weather instrumentation is in the same position it was last night. I believe that is the result of the very high barometric pressure, and probably does not mean a thing in terms of the forecasts they are giving me. The only thing different from yesterday morning is the rain. Yesterday it was raining and this morning it is not. That does not mean that it does not feel like it is going to rain, because it does. This morning I sit here trying to cool down, and everything is sticking to me.

Cry Me A River
That is what the sky is doing right now, crying us a river. With 4 days to go in the month of June we now have almost eight and a half inches of rain. How much before we can say hold enough. The bog at the foot of my hill is usually capable of supporting my weight by this time, but this year I can still swim in it, if I were so inclined. At some point this will all even out, when I am not sure, but eventually everything will average out.
The weather stick and the instruments are saying the same things they did this morning, so refer to this mornings Blog for that information. The thing that still intrigues me is that with a barometer this high we usually have clear crisp sunny weather, not rain. Today we have rain, rain and more rain. I am incredulous.

Raindrops So Many Raindrops
Yesterday was the first day since Father's Day that we did not have any rain. Well, that streak of one is now over, and we are back into the overcast and rain again. I am not quite sure how to break this news, but according to the forecasts I have read and heard this is what we have to look forward to all this week. I am not impressed, rather I am depressed with the prospect that my lawn keeps getting taller and my garden keeps getting weedier.
The weather stick, appropriately, points down, and we all know what that means, if it means anything. My other weather instrumentation is in the same position it was last night. I believe that is the result of the very high barometric pressure, and probably does not mean a thing in terms of the forecasts they are giving me. I look outside, and it is raining, and the sky is overcast with what appear to be stratus clouds. That, to me, indicates continued foul weather with rain.

A Nice Day Today
Indeed, this is the nicest day we have had since the Trek Across Maine. The sun was out most of the day, and I was able to get some things done. I do not hold out a great deal of hope for tomorrow, but where there is life there is hope.
The weather stick indicates somewhat unsettled weather pointing slightly up. The rest of the instruments indicate fair weather, or at the worst a mix of sun and clouds. I can accept either of those scenarios. We will just have to wait and see what happens

Overcast With Light Ground Fog
At least it is not raining this morning. It is quite humid right now, and all clothing is just sticking to me. It is most uncomfortable. I looked at a couple of forecasts, and today is supposed to be the pick of the week. If we have any outdoor projects to do we need to do them today, because the rest of the week looks like we will have rain every day. Am I not the bearer of such good news? Find some indoor projects that do not require low humidity for this week. Gee, I hope I am wrong.
The weather stick has taken up residence in the down position, so the indication there is for foul weather. The remote weather station is hanging onto a mix of sun and clouds for its forecast. The Weather Station Console and the Min/Max Thermometer are going blithely on calling for improved conditions with sun. We, once again, have our choice of forecasts, so the best I can say with the high barometer and other factors is unsettled summer weather for today, with a return to rain tonight. I think I am becoming an amphibian and growing webs between my fingers and toes to deal with all the wet weather.

A Little Bit Of Sun
Right now, (17:38 hours) there is a little sun showing through. We had some more rain this morning, but that has finally ended for now. I cannot say what we will have overnight, and the instruments are not being very clear about it. I understand that tomorrow is supposed to be the pick of the week, next week that is. Maybe I can cut some wood, and cut some grass as well tomorrow.
The weather stick points straight out indicating, as we know, unsettled weather. The remote weather station is forecasting mixed sun and clouds four a change. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer indicate improving conditions with sunny weather. Take your pick for your forecast, because I do not know what is going to happen.

In The Early Morning Rain
That is correct; we are once again having some early morning rain. Do we really need this? Bart is starting to call for his Bantu guides when I take him out in the morning because the grass is getting that tall. I still cannot get into the woods to cut down or cut up the "blowdowns" that are out there. If people are becoming a bit testy, it is no wonder. We are not getting enough sunshine to stimulate our third eye or Pineal Body. A few days of sunshine will do wonders for everyone's attitude as well as their outdoor projects.
The weather stick points down, and I guess that it is the most correct of the indicators right now. The remote weather station currently predicts clouds. The Weather Station Console and the Min/Max Thermometer both predict sunny weather. I do not know what planet they are predicting that for, but it certainly is not this one.

Clouds And Sun
After this morning's showers, we have played peek-a-boo with the sun for the rest of the day. How does one characterize a day like today? It was quite warm and humid, there was not a lot of sun, but when it was out the air became oppressive. It was a summer day and yet it was not. We really need to get rid of this constant rain or we will have no hay and no gardens. This is not a good situation. If I do not get the garden prepared in the next couple of days, I will have some real problems. In large measure, this is my food for the winter, and it needs to happen.
At least the instruments are beginning to get their acts together. The weather stick points slightly up giving us hope for unsettled, but improving weather. The Weather Station Console predicts improving weather with sun. The Min/Max Thermometer and remote weather station are indicating improving yet mixed clouds and sun. That is the closest they have been to agreement for a while. Let us hope that they are right, particularly about the improving part.

An Unfriendly Sky
When I went outside at about 05:30 hours the sky was overcast, the air oppressive and the ground fog was in place. Now, barely a half hour later, we are in the throes of a pretty significant thunderstorm. The rain has been falling at a rate of almost 1/4 of an inch per hour. There has been some lightning and thunder around making Bart quite nervous. We must be on the edge of the storm, because as quickly as it started it has stopped.
The weather stick points down, and that is a no brainier, as usual. The interesting thing is the complete disagreement among the electronic instruments. The Weather Station Console is calling for sunshine and fair weather. The Min/Max thermometer is forecasting stormy weather, and finally the remote weather station forecasts cloudy weather. You may take your pick, and believe the one you like the best. There is no danger of snow here, so that is not an option, but you select anything else. When instruments disagree like this, I am less and less surprised at the inaccuracy of the "experts" forecasts. Mother Nature will do whatever She wants to, and that may or may not match what we mere mortals predict that She will do.

The Humidity Is Back On A SSE Wind
It has become uncomfortable at just over seventy-nine degrees. In fact, the sun has just come out (17:19 hours) and the temperature is rising again. I am sitting here at my keyboard typing this and getting drenched. We did have some sprinkles during the day today, so I worked inside most of the day. There was not enough to measure though, just enough to make one not want to be outside.
We have the same situation with the electronic instruments that we had this morning. The remote weather station is forecasting clouds, even with a barometric reading above 30 inches of mercury. The Min/Max Thermometer is forecasting a mix of sun and clouds with a tendency for the conditions to deteriorate. Finally, the Weather Station Console is forecasting improving conditions with sunshine. The weather stick is the only one that has changed, and it points just slightly up. The atmosphere is still quite unsettled, and I guess that what we have are some line storms. (Storms that follow the sun as it crosses the tropic of Cancer, Capricorn or the Equator).

Another Very Foggy Morning
The fog was so dense this morning that it was not possible to determine the cloud type or cloud cover. With the temperature in the mid-fifties, it is comfortable even with the high humidity. This should burn off reasonably soon, so that it will be possible to cut up some more wood, and possibly get the lawn mowed. I have a lot planned for today. As the saying goes, "Make hay while the sun shines." These days we don't know how long it will shine.
The weather stick still points down in the morning and that can be discounted, I do believe. With instruments this confused it is no wonder that the professionals have a problem forecasting the weather. No wonder the forecasters have been saying that we will have unsettled weather with a chance for showers, and the possibility of some sunny breaks. In that way they cannot be wrong, since they have covered everything except snow, sleet and freezing rain.

A Very Bizarre Sunrise

Finally, No Rain
Since this morning, we have had no rain. In fact, it has been an exquisite early summer day. The humidity was low, and for that reason, the heat index was lower than the recorded temperature. There should be no complaints about a day like today. Unfortunately, the garden is still too wet to work in, and it is really getting overgrown with weeds. If I do not get a break soon, I will not have a garden for a third year, and that is not good. There are a few mare's tails and mackerel scales around, and that could mean trouble tomorrow. If it does not rain overnight or tomorrow morning, I should be able to get the garden prepped for the second time.
The weather stick points up as it usually does when we have low humidity as we do today. The Weather Station Console predicts continued fair weather, as does the Min/Max Thermometer. The remote weather station is back to clouds for the forecast. I cannot help but wonder who is correct. We shall see.

Does This Portend Foul Weather?
More Rain
Since May 1, we have collected almost fourteen inches of rain. That is enough to put a damper on anyone's outdoor activities. Today is the summer solstice, so we can look forward to warm weather, we hope. After all, we have seen it colder on the Fourth of July than it was on the fourth of January, but I do not think that will happen this year. Right now, the sky is clear, and the sun is shining brightly. With the temperature in the mid-fifties, it is quite comfortable. It certainly feels like a front has passed through bringing us some delightfully cooler air. The barometer has risen significantly overnight, and that accounts for the change in the air mass.
The weather stick still points down as it does almost every morning, and I am beginning to discount that. The remote weather station has now shown a change from clouds to a mix of sun and clouds for its forecast. The Min/Max Thermometer and the Weather Station Console are both forecasting improving conditions with sunshine for today. We need this not only for our gardens, but also for an attitude adjustment.

And The Rain Came Tumbling Down
Just as it did yesterday, as the afternoon wore on the clouds moved in. It started to rain by about 16:00 hours. At least I was able to get one tree cut down. I also am cutting it into four-foot lengths. The ground is still too wet to till, but I hope that situation will change soon.
The weather stick points straight out; therefore, it is predicting unsettled weather. All of the other weather instruments are calling for storms, and that is exactly what we are having.

A Little Ground Fog
We have a little ground fog this morning, but not nearly as dense as it was yesterday. Didn't we have some thunderstorms late yesterday afternoon and evening? We did not have any hail here, but we did have almost a half an inch of rain. There were a few clouds on the southern and eastern horizons, but not enough to worry about for now. As humid as it is, and as oppressive as the air is right now I would not be surprised to see the cumulonimbus clouds bubble up this afternoon for another round of thunder storms.
The weather stick, as usual, points down, indicating foul weather. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer are indicating deteriorating conditions with storms. Finally, the remote weather station is forecasting cloudy weather. I am not sure why that one shows clouds so often, but it must be the way it was set up at the factory, and depends on the amount of change in the barometric pressure.

Hazy, Hot, Humid And Overcast
Clouds have built in to the point where it is now overcast with what appear to be stratus clouds. There does not appear to be any rain around right now, but the air is absolutely oppressive. It certainly feels like there could be a shower around before the evening is over. We have gone from a cold wet spring to the very oppressive dog days of summer. Bart, my oppressive hot weather indicator, has remained virtually motionless all day. He and I have gone for several short walks, and that is about it. Right now, I am pretty well recovered from the Trek Across Maine, so tomorrow I will be out slaving in my garden to try to get it done.
The weather stick is not quite sure what it is going to do, so it points slightly up. The rest of the electronic instruments have agreed in no uncertain terms, and they say that we will have stormy weather.

A Rather Interesting Iris
Dense Fog
This morning the fog is so dense that it is not possible to evaluate the sky conditions. This appears to be the start of a summer weather pattern, and that is appropriate. The Summer Solstice is Wednesday. As usual the weather pattern that is developing is unsettled, and that does not bode well for getting the garden up and growing, but I am going to try.
The weather stick is in its usual down position, so that portends nothing, in my opinion, at this point. All three of the electronic stations are calling for unsettled conditions with a tendency to deteriorate.

Hazy, Hot And Humid Today
This afternoon the temperature at the coast was in the mid to lower seventies. It was a great finish to the twenty-second Trek Across Maine. We had nearly perfect weather for all three days. As we approached home, the temperature climbed through t the seventies into the upper eighties. Here as you may have noticed It reached into the nineties. I have been away on the Trek Across Maine, and have many things to do now that I have returned home. It was my three-day vacation, and I do appreciate the help I received from my family and friends to allow me to do this.
The weather instrumentation has returned to its former confused self. The Min/Max Thermometer indicates continued fair weather and sun. The Weather Station Console indicates deteriorating conditions with a mix of sun and clouds, and the remote weather station in still indicating cloudy conditions. Happy Father's Day
Good morning, and may all you dads have a fantastic day! The sky is hazy this morning, with clouds on the horizon. Already it feels like it's going to be a real scorcher! Then again, it is a good day for all you dads to go out on the water, fish, lounge in a hammock, or go fishing. Enjoy! Many have been grousing about no summer weather, that is, no heat. From what it's been the last few days, anyone can conclude that summer is, in fact, here. The electronic instruments all show different icons. The remote station is still showing clouds, the min/max shows a change afoot (sun and clouds) and the weather console is still showing sunny weather. Perhaps if all three show different predictions, one of them will get it right!

Definitely Summer
Record Number: 34 Date: 06/17/2006 AM/PM: PM
It's been another very warm, summerlike day. The slight increase in humidity was evident. Around 1800 hrs, a breeze picked up and the air was refreshing, although the humidity still was felt. Jeff called this afternoon and the ride today went well. Hopefully, with the weather forecast for tomorrow, all the bikers should take heed and hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Starting very early would also be a good thing. The weather stick is curled up, the Min/Max still shows clouds but the Remote Wx Station still hasn't caught up because it still shows clouds, and the Weather Console shows sunny weather.

We Are Not Taking Warning!
There is a red sky this morning as you can see. We are going to ride anyway. The temperature right now is just about perfect for bicycling, and soon we will take advantage of that. Yesterday was very nearly perfect. It did get a little warm by the time we reached Farmington, but still was an excellent day. We will keep our fingers crossed for the rest of the weekend. There are just a few clouds, as you can see, on the eastern horizon, but I do not believe they mean us any harm.
The weather stick is in its usual morning position, pointed down. The Min/Max thermometer and Weather Station Console agree this morning, indicating clear skies and fair weather. The Remote Weather Station still has not heard the news, or is just stubborn indicating unstable weather with clouds.

Summer Is Here
It was a cool start to the day, but by late morning, it was evident that the day was becoming rather warm. What a beautiful day for a bike ride!! Despite the heat, however, the humidity was relatively low. After lunch, I waited for Jeff to ride by and it was downright hot in the sun. Many bikers that passed were already sunburned and several looked quite hot (understandably so)….I don’t envy them and from what I understand from the professional forecasters, Sunday is going to be a real scorcher. I have heard the 'Triple H' phrase bandied about for that day. From what he said when he stopped, he was not alone in doing limited training due to the inclement weather. In fact, there were people who had ridden less than 100 miles in preparation for the ride, much like him. As long as the riders stay well hydrated, they should be fine.
The three instruments are not in agreement with each other. The weather stick points up, indicating continued fair weather. The electronic instruments disagree with each other. Min-Max thermometer and the remote weather station both indicate unsettled weather. The weather console indicates fair weather, with sun.

Cumulonimbus Clouds Without Rain Here
It's a Beautiful Morning!
It is truly a great morning for the first day of the Trek Across Maine. With temperatures near or just above 50 to start, we could not ask for better. This is not a race, but a fun ride to raise money and awareness for lung health in Maine. There was a tinge of red in the sky at 04:00 hours when I got up, but not enough to photograph. I do not think it portends any foul weather.
The weather instruments on the other hand do not strike me with confidence. The Min/Max Thermometer indicates improving weather with sun. The weather station console is calling for unsettled weather with improving conditions. Finally, the remote weather station is forecasting clouds or at least unsettled conditions. Finally, the weather stick points slightly down and we have been there before. I guess if you pay your money, you take your choice as to the forecast for today. I am hoping for nice weather, but I am not predicting anything.

Double Halo Around The Sun
Did anyone happen to notice the double halo around the sun at about noon today? From what I understand, this is a very rare occurrence. My best guess is that it was the result of the remnants of tropical storm Alberto. Whatever the cause it is still an interesting phenomenon. The Trek Across Maine starts tomorrow, and I will be riding in it. I am leaving the data collection and publication in the capable hands of my wife.
The weather stick points up indicating fair weather, and I hope it is correct. The other electronic instruments all indicate deteriorating conditions with rain. That is probably due to the presence of Alberto just off shore.

No Showers But Overcast
That is correct. Overnight we have had a very heavy dew, but there has been no additional precipitation. The sky is currently overcast and there seems to be some threat of showers. The lawn needs mowing again, and the garden still needs to be cultivated. The barn also needs to be finished. I will get something done today even if it is wrong. The garden is out of the question because it is still so much like walking in oatmeal. The lawn can probably wait until Monday, and that leaves the barn. "The die is cast," as Caesar said when he crossed the Rubicon.
The weather instrumentation and the weather stick finally are all in agreement. They are all calling for deteriorating conditions with rain, and the weather stick points down. I did see the glow of a red sky this morning as well. All of these portend some foul weather for the next 12 hours anyway.

Showers Still Happening
We went for a bicycle ride this morning, and we got back just before we had another shower. It turned out to be a good one with almost a quarter of an inch of rain. Let it get it out of its system before Friday and the start of the Trek Across Maine. For the past 4 years, we have had rain on the ride, and I would like to have a dry ride for once. Oh well, I can dream can't I?
The weather stick points down, and that has been the closest to correct that we have had lately. Two of the three electronic instruments are still saying sun and improvement. That is just wrong. The third is calling for clouds. The rain says otherwise.

High Pressure Building In
Despite the rising barometer, we had a significant shower this morning between 02:30 and 04:30 hours that deposited another tenth of an inch or precipitation. At this rate, I will need to wait until after the Trek Across Maine to Cultivate my garden. It is just so wet that I sink in over my ankles when I step into it. If I use my big tiller it will go to the center of the earth, and my little tiller would become a mud mixer. I just cannot win. The next 3 or four days should dry things out so I can get that job done. I mowed the lawn on Monday, and it could be done again today. I cannot mow the ditches because of the standing water in the bottom of them. The mosquitoes are vicious.
The weather stick is slightly down indicating our usual unsettled weather. Because of the high barometer, the Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console are indicating Sun and improving conditions. The Remote Weather Station is still calling for unsettled weather with clouds. Whom do you believe? I guess we will believe whoever turns out to be right.

The Sun Went Away
Not long after my early morning report of clear skies, I noticed that thee were an awful lot of Cumulus and Cumulonimbus clouds moving in. Then at around 13:30 I heard the pitter patter of rain on the roof. I could not clean the barn today after I got my errands done. Gone too is another opportunity for a bicycle ride. I am going to be in horrible shape for this weekend's ride from Sunday River to Owl's Head. I guess that I will just have to take my time and do the best I can.
The weather stick points toward unsettled weather again. The remote weather station does not know what it is going to do, so it is showing clouds. The other two electronic instruments call for sun and improvement. The only other indicator is the smoke from the wood boiler, which was moving up when I saw it a couple of hours ago. That is the only positive sign.

Just Since This Morning It Opened
The Sun, The Sun
The sun is up, and it is shining brightly. I looked at areas of my lawn that I mowed on Sunday, and I could mow them again. These are areas D.O.T. ditched and have water lying in the bottom of. Not only are these areas growing grass as fast as it can be mowed, but also they are growing an exceptionally good crop of mosquitoes. If government is concerned about mosquito borne disease that should send up all kinds of red flags about West Nile Virus, etc. Maybe those ditches should not be as deep as they are where there is a probability of water standing in them. This is just a thought from a biologist that lived and worked in a swampy state a little south of here (Louisiana).
The weather maps that I consulted are showing a mostly clear day, with some clouds later this afternoon. The weather stick currently points down, and we all know that is normal, signifying nothing. The Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console both indicate continued improving conditions with sun, and the remote weather station still calls for clouds or unsettled conditions. Maybe it will catch up with the others later.

The Peonies of Summer Are Blooming
June 12, 2006
A Great Day For A Change
What a day to get some outside work done? This was that kind of day. Wood was stacked, the push mower used to trim the lawn and the riding mower to finish the job. I did get to step into the garden on a couple of occasions, and it is still far too wet to cultivate, let alone walk on. The asparagus has gone by, but the lettuce and other vegetables that had come up are doing all right. Some of the garlic seems a bit stunted, but time will tell on that. Before the end of this week, I hope to have the garden planted. I do not know what I will have for results. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
The weather stick finally points up, so it is calling for some good weather. The Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console are both calling for continued improving conditions with sun. The remote weather station is indicating clouds or at best unsettled weather. The other indicator, which is not positive, is the smoke from my outdoor wood boiler which is drifting down indicating unsettled weather in the offing. There was no red sky this morning, and there is no red sky tonight, but there are some mare's tails and mackerel scales, so we may be in for a bit of foul weather. I am just not certain enough to make a prediction at this point.

No Showers Overnight
That is correct. There were no showers overnight. This morning, as I looked east, there was a very dark cloudbank. The temperatures, right now, are quite comfortable, in the low sixties. The relative humidity is down from the 90% + levels, where it has been. The barometric pressure is rising from the levels around 29.50 in.Hg. What does all this mean? In my humble opinion, we are experiencing some unsettled, but improving weather. There may be some instability in the atmosphere this afternoon.
Currently the weather stick points slightly down indicating that instability. The Min/Max thermometer and Weather Station Console are indicating improving conditions with sun. The remote weather station indicates clouds or at least instability. We shall see what happens as the day unfolds.
It should be noted that for the month of June we have had more rain than we had for the entire month of May. Just think, if it were snow we would have had almost 12 feet of the white stuff.

One More Shower
The rain just did not give up without a fight. Around 11:00 hours we had a 0.02 inch shower. For the rest of the day we have had intermittent sun and clouds. Right now, (18:00 hours) the sky is mostly cloudy with some very small patches of blue between the cumulus clouds. I do not know what is in store for us, but it is my opinion that we are in the middle of some more unsettled weather.
The weather stick points straight out, indicating that we are having some unsettled weather. The remote weather station is calling for clouds again, and that is unsettled. The other two electronic instruments are calling for improving weather with sun. I am not sure I believe that, so we will need to wait for morning to find out the next installment.

Storm Clouds Breaking Up??
At the risk of being accused of being optimistic, it appears that the storm clouds are beginning to break to our west. It does seem that the rain stopped around 02:30 hours this morning If that is indeed the case, then maybe, just maybe, we may begin to dry out a little bit. Among the positive signs are a slightly improving barometric pressure and a shift in the wind to the southwest.
The weather stick still points down, but that is not unusual in the morning, and I am still not sure if it is just a result of the amount of humidity in the air or if it is just the nature of the wood. The remote weather station still indicates rain. The Min/Max Thermometer indicates unsettled but improving conditions, and the Weather Station Console says the same thing. I would like to believe that the conditions are improving, and the weather will finally break. I saw some farms yesterday that were nothing more than mud between here and Fryeburg. They had been plowed, but the water was just sitting there, and there was no evidence of germinating seed. As someone mentioned to me, it is getting late to get crops planted, and expect to have anything to harvest before frost.

Another All Day Soaker
Fortunately, I had a meeting in Fryeburg today, so the fact that it rained did not hurt me in terms of what I need to do. It has finally stopped raining (19:00 hours), so it may have the opportunity to dry out a little bit overnight. I am going to get the lawn done, even if it means that I have "pesto" under my mower deck. What must be done must be done. The next task is to either get some wood or get the garden plot tilled again to get rid of the weeds. My guess is that wood will be cut tomorrow. Tuesday will be set aside to till the garden, and Wednesday to plant what I can. We are beck to the rush to judgment.
The weather stick is pointed down, so it is calling for more of this weather. The Min/Max Thermometer is calling for unsettled weather with improving conditions. The other two electronic forecasters are calling for rain with continued poor conditions. I am currently hoping for clearing weather tomorrow and continued improvement for the week. I am entitled to dream, am I not?

Saturday Equals Rain
Yes, this is Saturday, and it is raining again. Overnight we have had almost an inch of rain bringing our total, so far, to almost five inches for the month of June. In the first third of June, we have had almost as much rain as we had for the month of May. In addition to the rain, we are also having a little bit of fog. It is not a serious detriment to visibility at this point, it is just there. It just makes it a little more dismal. I have heard a ridiculous rumor that for the next ten days, we are going to have mostly sunny and pleasant weather, and that includes the Trek Across Maine. That would be delightful if it is true. I will believe it when I see it.
Right now, my weather stick points down indicating continued foul weather. My three electronic instruments are indicating a storm. That is exactly what we appear to be having. It is continuing to rain, and we are now over 5 inches of rain for the month.

The Model Was Not Quite Correct
We did have a few minutes of sun this morning, but just a few. Most of the day it has been overcast and remains so. Around 16:00 hours we did have a sprinkle of rain, but not enough to measure. It is still threatening. With the look of the sky and the feel of the atmosphere, I suspect that we will get some more sky juice tomorrow. We can only hope for the first part of the week for some relief. I need a day or two to dry out the ground, and then I need to get the garden planted before it is too late. I still cannot believe that we have had this kind of weather two years in a row. Mother Nature has not been kind to us. The only thing we can do is move on from here as best we can. The longer I have it, the more I like my Wood Boiler. It is keeping my water hot, my house warm and my fuel bills lower.
The weather stick is now indicating unsettled weather by pointing slightly down. The other three electronic instruments are all indicating stormy weather in the offing. I tend to agree. Let's hold out hope for next week.

It Has Stopped Raining
It actually stopped raining around 02:30 hours this morning. Right now, the sky is overcast and hazy, but it is not raining here. With the temperature in the mid-fifties and the relative humidity at 92% it is actually fairly comfortable. I have again checked on the model weather maps for the next couple of days. It appears that the clouds will move out during the day today, only to return early tomorrow morning with another dose of rain for tomorrow. The sky and ground appear to have a chance to dry out Sunday and Monday. That is the prediction from the maps. I would not take bets on any of it, other than the rain tomorrow.
All of my electronic instruments are calling for continued unstable conditions with rain, and that includes the weather stick. Even the smoke from my wood boiler is drifting down, and that indicates continued low pressure and unstable conditions.

No Change From This Morning
Just for fun, I looked back at last year's data. By this date, we had about 0.5 inches of rain for June. Right now, we have had 3.89 inches of rain for the month of June. For the entire month of June last year, we had a little over 6 inches of rain. Much of that fell on the Trek Across Maine. We can only hope that the rain will end soon, and we will have pleasant weather for that ride. As an additional bit of information, the rain has been falling at 0.06 inches per hour for most of the day, with the exception of 10:00 hours to around noon, when it fell at 0.02 inches per hour. This has definitely not been pleasant. I am hoping for a better day tomorrow in order to get some outside work done, but from what I hear that is not going to happen.
With the exception of the Remote Weather Station, all of the instruments, including the weather stick, are indicating continued foul weather and deteriorating conditions. The Remote Weather Station is steadfastly hanging onto its forecast of cloudy weather. Oh well, it will get with the program eventually.

Cold, Blustery And Rainy
There is continued rain this morning, therefore it must be Thursday. Do we detect a pattern? It seems that whatever day it is it must be raining. I am becoming a true pessimist, and a cynic. I not only see the glass as half empty, but it is also probably poisoned. I cannot get over the amount and duration of this stormy weather. I have spoken with several people that are in the same situation I am concerning their gardens. They have parts that are planted, and the seed has rotted in the ground. Their weed crop is excellent. There are some vegetables that have come up and are doing well. They also cannot get out on their gardens to finish planting or replanting, because the soil is so wet. We need at least three days of warm dry weather to be able to get the gardens finished.
The instrumentation tells the basic story. The barometer is falling, and the weather stick points down. The Weather Station Console indicates deteriorating conditions with rain, and the Min/Max Thermometer is calling for the same. The Remote Weather Station still calls for cloudy weather (I see the rain; therefore I do not believe this one). The modeling map shows us in the soup today, clearing tonight and tomorrow and back in the soup on Saturday. It would be nice if it would stay clear on Saturday for all the weekend warriors.

The Showers Continue
It is raining therefore this must be Wednesday. The best I could do today was unload the wood that I picked up yesterday and run some errands. There is just nothing redemptive to say about a dank, dismal, depressing and rainy day. I feel like the kid at Camp Granada writing a letter to his parents on a rainy day, but the sun has not come out for us as it did for him. I am whining again!
The weather stick has it right by pointing down, indicating foul weather. The Min/Max Thermometer says the conditions will deteriorate to a mix of sun and clouds, and that is wrong. The Weather Station Console is indicating improving conditions with sun (I don't believe it). The Remote Weather Station is just calling for cloudy weather. None of them has it all right. It is raining, and it appears to me that it is going to continue to rain. I am whining again!!

The Showers Start Again
I stepped out the door at about 05:00 hours and was greeted by, guess what, raindrops. The rain, according to yesterday's prognostications, was not supposed to start until later this afternoon, but here we are and here it is. This is getting so disheartening. I cannot train for my bicycle ride, I cannot work in my garden, I cannot mow my lawn and I cannot get into the woods to get the wood I need. I can do things inside, and there are things I need to do. I will say this, I have been on several training rides, and so far I do not think I will have a problem as long as I keep my speed down a bit and take my time.
The weather stick indicates unsettled weather again by pointing slightly down. Just like last night, the Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console indicate improving conditions with sun (I don’t believe it). The remote weather station is indicating a mix of sun and clouds, just like last night (I don’t believe that either). The mares tails and mackerel scales of yesterday tell a tale of rain in 24 hours, and I think that is what we will have today, just for something new, unique and different.

Halo Around The Moon
This has been a very busy day, mainly because the weather was very good. I did get in 10.5 miles of a 16 mile ride. At 10.5 miles I apparently hit a piece of glass that some very nice individual threw out of their car to break against the bridge just east of the New Sharon wood Yard at Weeks Mills Road. That is most inconsiderate, and dangerous too. There ought to be a law, oh, that's right there is a law, it is just not obeyed. Fortunately I was able to reach a friend who was able to pick me up so I did not have a 6 mile walk. My thanks to him. I was able to pick up a cord of wood, and haul it home, and went to my rehearsal. Then I got the chores done when I got home.
This was a beautiful day, as I have already mentioned. The weather stick this evening has gone back into unsettled mode by pointed down slightly. The Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console are both indicating continued improvement in the weather with sun. The remote weather station is still calling for unsettled weather with a mix of sun and clouds. I won't even try to call this one.

Partly Cloudy With Fog
Despite the fog, it was a real pleasure to look up and see cirrus clouds with blue spaces between. Once the fog burns off it should be a very nice morning. As soon as I get the critters taken care of, I am going for a bike ride. Time is growing short, so I need to get in as many training rides before the Trek Across Maine as possible. The temperature this morning is quite comfortable, and should go up from here. This is one of the reasons I am going to go for a ride this morning, instead of waiting until this afternoon.
The weather stick this morning is in its usual stance in the morning, and that is pointed down. Obviously the relative humidity has some effect on it, as does the heat of the day. The Min/Max Thermometer and weather station console are both predicting that conditions will improve and we will have sunny weather today. The remote station will not give up the clouds, but it is calling for them to be mixed with sun.
Once I accomplish my ride I have some other errands to run today, but maybe I can get my lawn mowed tomorrow morning before the weather goes south.

The Clouds Have Just Broken
For a day that was supposed to be clear according to all the model maps, radar images and satellite imagery this has been a cloudy, rainy day. Within the last fifteen minutes the clouds have begun to break up and there are small patches of sunlight showing up. If this continues we should have a nice day tomorrow. Finally I should be able to go for a training ride before I go to get some wood tomorrow afternoon. Just a note, the temperature is rebounding very nicely. In the last twenty minutes, since 16:15, the temperature has gone from 66.3°F to 68.3°F, and It is still climbing.
The weather stick still points down, but it will take a while to catch up with the weather. The weather station console and Min/Max Thermometer are finally showing a tendency to improve, although they are calling for mixed sun and clouds. The remote station is steadfastly calling for clouds. Based on all this, and what I am seeing with clouds hanging on the mountains and hills, as well as the smoke from my wood boiler starting to rise, my best forecast is for unstable weather for the rest of the afternoon and evening, but improving conditions.

Rain Started Again
The word had it that the rain was supposed to be gone this morning, and the wind shift to the Northwest. Well, that did not happen! Instead it has started to rain again at around 05:15 hours. As an advocate for both healthy activities and safety I cannot in all good conscience recommend that people work in the woods with sharp instruments like chainsaws or get on a bicycle and ride on the roads. Working in the garden is not possible because it is so wet, and the lawn is in the same position.
This is the third report where the weather indicators and instruments are giving the same report. The weather stick points down indicating continued foul weather. The Min/Max Thermometer and weather station console are calling for stormy conditions. The remote weather station is clinging to its forecast of cloudy weather. I cannot embellish on that, and I cannot make it sound any better.

Rain Stopped, But Still Overcast
This has been one of the dreariest days I have seen in a while. Instead of feeling like the onset of summer, it feels more like the onset of spring, or the end of winter. With temperatures hovering in the low fifties the ground will not warm up enough to allow the seeds, if there are any left, to germinate. I cannot get out to plant my potatoes either, nor any of my other vegetables. Things that I do not want to grow in the garden are growing, and they must be stopped, quickly. Enough of my whining, it is supposed to be nice tomorrow and Tuesday, so we must take hope from that.
The weather instruments are indicating the same things they did this morning, unsettled and foul weather. I do hope they are wrong. By the way I did not go for a bicycle ride this morning, but I did not collect any donations for it either. I paid the registration, and I was going to make a donation to ride, but I find riding needs to be fun, and riding in the cold and wet is not fun, and never has been. Maybe I will be able to do it next year, if the weather co-operates.

Still It Rains
It appears that we are not having an all day soaker, but an all weekend soaker. Right now it is only raining at 0.04 inches/hour, but that keeps adding to our total. That total is now up to 2.06 inches for the month. I would like to put a positive spin on this storm, but I cannon find any redeeming qualities to it. Once again I am in the position of needing sun just to finish planting my garden, and I cannot plant it until it dries out enough to be able to walk on it and cultivate the weeds that continue to grow unabated. My lawn also grows unabated, and it is difficult to mow a swamp. I know, it seems that all I do is complain. The weather is something we can all complain about, and when it is counterproductive we can really complain about it. The weather is not allowing us to do the things we need to do, be it gardening, painting, lawn care or wood harvest, and I have all of those things to do.
At least three of my weather indicators are in agreement. The weather stick points down, the weather station console is calling for deteriorating conditions and rain, and the Min/Max Thermometer is calling for the same. The remote weather station is indicating clouds, and we could not have this rain without the clouds. I have checked the NEXRAD radar and the Model Maps, and they are both saying that this weather may actually end tomorrow, but we all know that tomorrow never comes (we only get today).

A Single Drop of Rain

Rain Still Falls
We are having the all day soaker. Sometime it was heavier and sometime lighter, but it has rained all day long. This is enough to make any gardener depressed. We did not make 8 inches of rain in May, but we are just 3 days short, and we now have over 8 inches of rain since the 1st of May.
All the instruments are indicating foul weather, and I cannot comment any further on that. If this is going to continue, and it is showing no inclination to stop I will not do the Tour de Cure in Biddeford tomorrow. I hate to ride a bicycle in the rain!

It's Raining, It's Pouring
Well, at least it is raining. The rain started just as I went outside to check on the weather stick and the wood boiler. I am sure that by the time I complete this commentary there will be more rain, but we do have a snapshot in time here, so unless there are drastic changes in the min/max temperatures I usually do not make changes to the data. It certainly looks like this will be a great day to finish some left over indoor projects from the winter. It will certainly not be a great day for working outside.
The weather instruments are still giving me fits. The weather stick points down, and that is a no-brainer, since foul weather is what we are currently having. The weather station console and Min/Max thermometer agree that rain is the order of the day with deteriorating conditions. The remote weather station is steadfastly calling for cloudy conditions, and I guess from the standpoint that we need clouds to have rain it is correct. It has just missed out on the fact that there is rain falling from those clouds. My best guess for today is that we will have showers today at the very least, and possibly a soaking rain.

Clouds To Sun To Clouds
When I checked the model maps and radar, it appeared that there were some storms bearing down on us. I understand that Portland got wet, but we did not. The clouds parted and the sun came out, and it stayed out most of the day, that is until about 18:00 hours. It is right now back to being overcast, but these appear to be altocumulus clouds rather than the stratocumulus we had this morning. I have again checked the model maps and NEXRAD Radar, and the current radar shows the storms sliding off to the south of us. The modeling map shows that most of the morning tomorrow should be all right, but later tomorrow we may well be in for some storms.
My weather instrumentation is in large measure confused. The weather stick is up, and the weather right now is pleasant. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer are indicating deteriorating conditions with rain. The remote weather station is just predicting clouds. Unsettled is the best I can come up with for a forecast based on those instruments.

Another Gray Dismal Morning
Dismal, with the damp musties is what I found this morning. The sky is overcast, and there is a real threat of rain. The puddles from yesterday's thunderstorm have not dried up, and my garden is turning green with weeds. Will we ever have any relief? The lawn is beginning to look like a hayfield, and it has been less than a week since it was mowed. The last time I mowed it I was rained on several times, as you may recall. I understand that the rain today will be more significant than it was last week. I have just checked the model maps and the NEXRAD radar composite, and while the southern end of the state is having some significant showers, there does not appear to be anything in this area.
My weather instruments and indicators are not in 100% agreement, but what else is new. The weather stick points down indicating some foul weather, and from the look of the sky, I would agree. The weather station console and Min/Max Thermometer indicate deteriorating conditions and rain. The remote station is indicating a mix of sun and clouds. It is not raining here yet, but from the look of the sky and the high humidity, I would not be surprised to see some raindrops

Thundershowers Around
The sky has been threatening all morning long and finally the clouds opened up and we had a thundershower. It is as sticky right now, as it was before the shower. I do see the clouds moving quickly, and there is now a breeze, that is helping to make it feel better. There are enough clouds around that they may produce some more rain before the afternoon is over. I have just checked the model and the radar images, and there are some showers headed our way.
This helps to make sense of the instrumentation and indicators. The weather stick is slightly down showing a tendency for the weather to be unstable and deteriorate. The Weather station console and Min/Max Thermometer are indicating deteriorating conditions with rain. The remote station is indicating clouds or unsettled weather. I will agree that the atmosphere is unstable, and that we will probably have some more showers before the system moves out.

May Summary
Our rainfall total is not quite as high as it was last year, but we have still had an inordinate amount of inclement weather. It appeared that April was going to lead us into a great May where planting could be done on time, and then we would have some early crops to harvest. That was not to be. With less than one third of our days starting out clear, and fewer than that ending clear it is not surprising that our crops are slow to come up, let alone bear fruit. We did have almost 6 inches of rain, and that was about 2 inches less than we had last May. With all that rain, like last year, the weeds are doing very well. I do hope to get some things growing, particularly the peas and corn. Some of the other crops are beginning to germinate, and they do need cultivation in order to beat the weeds.

Overcast, Clammy And Showers
We have gone from a Starry, Starry Night to Raindrops Are Falling on My Head since midnight. When I took Bart out for his morning constitutional it was raining, but it had just started. It was possible to distinguish the discrete drops on the pavement. No matter, it appears to be getting darker, and that portends more unsettled and rainy weather. Why should the weather change, just because the month has?
The instrumentation and indicators seem to have reached a consensus. The weather stick is pointed down indicating deteriorating and unsettled conditions. Two of the electronic instruments are indicating rain over the next twelve hours. The remote weather station is indicating cloudy conditions. I think that we are going to have another day of cloudy skies with an excellent chance for showers. I have looked at the radar, modeling and forecast images for this area and there appear to be some showers moving toward us, but NOAA is predicting that the rain will stop between 11:00 and 14:00 hours this afternoon. Once again, we will get all the weather that Mother Nature wishes to throw at us.
