What A Difference A Day Makes.

Last night and today were quite comfortable. It did get warm, but we were able to clean all but one of the stalls in the barn. It is great to have that job completed, and I appreciate the help I had. We did in four hours what it would have taken me the better part of a week to get done. Incredible! The barometer has remained steady over the course of the day, which should indicate a stable weather pattern. There are some predictions of precipitation tomorrow, but from what I see I have very little confidence in those predictions.
The Weather Stick is straight indicating some unsettled weather in the offing. The Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console are continuing to indicate improving conditions with sunshine, and the remote weather station still forecasts clouds. Once again it is a case of who do you believe? I am not going to stick my neck out and make a prediction tonight. That is one of the advantages of not being in the position where I have to make such a prediction. Yeah, I am a chicken sometime, particularly when the data does not give a clear signal of the weather to come.

A Repeat Of Yesterday?

The temperature is finally down in the comfortable zone, and so is the dewpoint. This is (I think) the first time this month that the dewpoint has been in the forties. It was a great night for sleeping. The barometric pressure rose a little bit over night, indicating a continuation of the good weather we had yesterday. The relative humidity is still quite high, but should decline during the day. There are some clouds on the eastern horizon, but I do not think they pose a threat to us at this time.
The Weather Stick still points down in the morning (I observe it at about 05:00 hours) when the humidity is usually at its highest. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer indicate continued improvement in the weather with sunshine. The remote weather station still calls for clouds in its forecast. I have checked the N.O.A.A. forecast, and they indicate some rain late this afternoon. The Weather Underground forecast model map does not see any rain today. I tend to feel that we will have a very good day to work outside. The forecast is for temperatures in the eighties, low humidity and bright sunshine, and I believe that.

A Very Pleasant Summer Day

The humidity was low enough that, even though we had our third day over ninety degrees, the heat index was lower than the actual temperature. It was a pleasant day to work outside, and that is what I did. I have accumulated a significant amount of wood toward the winter heat. My daughter has also found the place where the chickens have been hiding their eggs for the last two days. They are good at what they do, and hiding eggs is what they do best. There were almost two dozen between what they had hidden and what I had collected. The barometer is on the rise, the temperature is into the fifties and the relative humidity has gone up a bit. The sky was clear and the stars quite visible.
The Weather Stick points up, and that once again is no surprise. The Weather Station Console is calling for a mix of sun and clouds with improving conditions. The Min/Max Thermometer predicts improving weather with sunshine. The remote weather station says it will be cloudy. I like the Min/Max Thermometer, and with all the data I think that it will be correct.

A Little Less Humid

The sky this morning is clearer than it has been in recent days. There were no clouds, but the eastern sky was red. This is the first morning in a while that the dew point has been below sixty degrees. It is much more comfortable. From the model maps, that I have checked the forecast appears to be a clear day. The Weather Stick still points down and I am beginning to believe that has no portent at all. It is a great conversation piece though. The Weather Station
Console and Min/Max Thermometer indicate improving conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. The remote weather station still calls for rain. From the maps mentioned above and the sky this morning, I suspect that it will be a nice day to work outside. It may even be less humid, making it more comfortable.

Hazy, Hot And Humid

The atmosphere is not giving us any relief. Unless there is a change we will have a third day above ninety degrees and that will constitute another heat wave. I did check out the view toward Mount Blue and the air was blue with haze. The smoke from my wood boiler was blowing down indicating low pressure in the area. The heat and humidity have been oppressive this afternoon. I did get my field mowed, so the golden rod may not get to go to seed and make the field inedible for the goats. I have noted that where I had thistle I no longer do because they were cut down before they could go to flower. The goats don't eat thistle either.
The relative humidity at 44% has had an effect on the Weather Stick and it now points up. The three electronic instruments are in the same mode they were this morning forecasting rain. I guess a scattered shower is not out of the questing this evening.

Rain Ended For The Moment

There is not a cloud in the sky, but there is a little bit of very low level ground fog. The sky, as you can see from the photograph below was a beautiful shade of red. I am not sure if that indicates a continuation of the weather we have been having or not. If we are to believe the old saw, then we will see some more rain today. That is indeed unfortunate. There is much that needs to be accomplished, and it cannot be done in the rain.
The humidity seems to be creeping higher and higher every morning, and that is having its effect of the Weather Stick, which points down again this morning. All three electronic weather instruments are predicting that the conditions will continue to deteriorate, and we will have rain. According to the Weather Underground Model Map today is supposed to be clear, but according to N.O.A.A. rain will begin to move into the area by 14:00 hours and continue into this evening. I have a tendency to go with the rain based on the indicators outlined above with my instrumentation.

How About Some Rain

The models certainly have gotten it right today. I got to stack quite a bit of the wood that fell over yesterday, but both Bart and I got wet enough that we gave up and came inside. The rain continues to fall, and there is occasional lighting and thunder. Remember if you can hear the thunder, you are all right because the lightning has already passed. Oh, by the way, there appears to be quite a bit of rain headed our way according to the NEXRAD Composite Radar.
I have a very big surprise, the Weather Stick points down. (P.S. Joke) (Laughter Now!) All three of the electronic instruments currently say the same thing, Rain Now. Oh well, maybe tomorrow will be a better day.

Welcome To The Northern Sauna!

I just looked back at the records from last year, and I was correct when I thought that it was not as hot or as humid last year. This has been a very long stretch of hot and humid weather. Relative humidity last year ran in the fifties, and with a few exceptions highs were in the seventies and eighties with a couple of nineties. The summary for this month should be very interesting. There is some ground fog this morning, but it is not as dense as it was yesterday. Further, it is still very oppressive this morning despite the showers we had yesterday afternoon.
With a 93% relative humidity the weather stick still points down. There has been a change in the electronic instruments. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer both are forecasting deteriorating conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. The remote weather station forecasts a cloudy day again. According to the models I have looked at rain should be moving into the area later this morning, and will last into this evening.

Weather To Melt In

Once again we are faced with high relative humidity and warm temperatures. The dew point is 67.8°F, which indicates a very uncomfortable night ahead. We had a shower again this afternoon, and that produced only 0.02 inches of rain here. There were other areas that received much more. This weather is quite reminiscent of weather we had when we lived in New Orleans. There would be a thunderstorm between 13:00 hours and 16:00 hours every afternoon during the summer. Thank goodness that does not always happen here. Oh, by the way it would be just as humid after the storm there as it has been here.
The Weather Stick points slightly down, and that may indicate some slight improvement. The electronic instruments remain totally confused. The Weather Station Console says improvement with sunshine. The Min/Max Thermometer indicates a mix of sun and clouds with improvement. The remote weather station still shows clouds. Anybody want to guess at a forecast. How about unsettled weather with a chance of showers tomorrow afternoon?

Fog Clinging To Everything

It looks like it has rained, but it has not. The fog has coated everything that is outside. It looks like the fog will hang around for a while this morning, before it dissipates. According to N.O.A.A., we will have some light rain this morning, but the Weather Underground prediction is for a clear day. There is a lot of moisture off shore, and it stretches the entire length of the east coast. It is quite humid yet, so we have not had a real change of air mass.
The Weather Stick points down, (no further comment needed there.) The Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console both indicate sunshine and improving conditions. The remote weather station predicts clouds. With this much disagreement we will just have to wait and see what happens.

Some More Thunderstorms

That scattered shower did occur with quite a light show and sound effects. As you can see we did have almost a half an inch of rain, and that came down in about 45 minutes. The storm did not alleviate the humid conditions we are experiencing, and I understand that will not change until the weekend. That seems to be the opinion of N.O.A.A. and the Weather Underground model. The NEXRAD radar shows that there are no storms behind the one we had.
The Weather Stick prognosticated well, and points down. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer are in the same mode they have been lately with improving conditions and sunshine. The remote weather station still predicts clouds. We may yet have some more showers.

Somewhat Oppressive

The warmer temperature and high humidity are reminding us that it is still summer. There was a red sky this morning, but it was not impressive, and the clouds that were present were non-descript (basically cirrostratus). Even though we have not had a lot of rain over the past week my lawn is screaming to be mowed, and I still need to finish cleaning the barn. I have checked the NEXRAD radar map, and that is showing nothing in our area. The Weather Underground model map indicates a clear day today, but the N.O.A.A. forecast map shows some light rain this afternoon.
My Weather Stick still points down, and with the relative humidity and oppressive feel to the air I am not surprised. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer still forecast improvement with sunshine. The remote weather station may not be able to predict anything but clouds, and that is what it is doing. With the red sky, Weather Stick and oppressive feel to the air a scattered shower is not out of the question today.

A Pretty Good Finish.

This morning started out fairly clear, but by noon, clouds had moved into the area. We did have some spattering of rain, although there was not enough to measure. This was the same pattern that we had yesterday, although the showers we had today were not as heavy as the one I rode through yesterday. I did get some more wood collected from the shed that we are tearing down. If it continues like this, we will have it done by the end of the week. We are going to attempt a bicycle ride tomorrow morning before we continue the deconstruction of the shed.
The Weather Stick continues to point up in the afternoon with the lower relative humidity. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer also continue to indicate improving conditions with sunshine. The remote weather station still thinks (if that is appropriate) that clouds are the order of the forecast. The Weather Underground model map indicates that we will have good weather tomorrow, while the N.O.A.A. forecast is for light rain in the morning with clearing by mid-afternoon. I guess we can only say unsettled weather is in the offing.

A Good Start?

It is indeed nice to have the temperature in the mid-fifties. The dewpoint is even in the low fifties, which made it very nice for sleeping last night. There was a bit of valley fog visible from my vantage point on top of a hill, but it did not seem to be widespread. The modeling maps indicate that there may be some rain in the area later today or this evening. With the amount of outside work that needs to be done, very late this evening would be best, but we don't always get what we want.
At a 91% humidity the Weather Stick points down, and by now that should not be a surprise to any of us. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer both predict improving conditions and sunshine. The remote weather station forecasts cloudy weather again.

Another Nice Day

I took a bicycle ride late this morning out route 2 to New Sharon and back into Farmington. When I got to Gage Corner it started to ran, and it did not stop until I got to Frenchman Flats. Needless to say, I got soaked. The rain was not very cold, so it was not too bad, and by the time I got back into town, I was almost dry. There was no rain here, as far as I could tell, so it depended on where you were if you got wet or not. The rest of the day was quite nice, warm, but not oppressive.
The Weather Stick, under the influence of the low humidity, pointed up. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer both predict sunshine and improving conditions. The remote weather station still predicts clouds. The Weather Model from Weather Underground is calling for light rain tomorrow afternoon, and so is the N.O.A.A. forecast. I do hope they are wrong, and we have another sunny day, but we will need to wait until tomorrow to find that out.

It Must Be Monday

Now that the weekend is over the sky has cleared, and it is looking like the start of a very nice day. The relative humidity is still quite high, but the temperature is low, comparatively speaking. As I sit here writing this (at 05:30 hours) I see some ground fog moving in. That was not present 30 minutes ago when I took Bart out for his morning constitutional. See, if you do not like the weather here, wait a minute or two and it will probably change. You may not like the change, but it can change again in a few minutes.
With a 92% relative humidity, can you guess where the weather stick points? (Down would be a good guess.) The electronic instruments are another matter altogether. The Weather Station console indicates improving weather, but unsettled conditions. The Min/Max Thermometer forecasts sunshine with improving conditions. Finally, the remote weather station predicts rain. If this sounds familiar, it is the same set of forecasts that we had last night. The modeling maps show a storm system extending from the Maritimes to the Gulf of Mexico, but it is far enough off shore that it does not appear to affect us.

A Grey Day

This afternoon it drizzled off and on. There was no additional precipitation recorded, it was just not conducive to working outside. I got some wood taken care of and stacked, but I need a lot more. A grey, overcast day like today is good for doing some things inside, and that is what I did.
The instrumentation and indicators do not seem to agree this evening. The Weather Stick points slightly down giving the impression that we are in an unsettled pattern. The electronic instruments all differ in their forecast. The Weather Station Console indicates improving conditions, but unsettled with a mix of sun and clouds. The Min/Max Thermometer forecasts sun with improving conditions. The remote weather station forecasts rain. Do you have a particular forecast you would like to see happen? You may take your pick from the above. The modeling maps are saying that tomorrow should be a good day.

Some Additional Rain

Overnight we did have some additional rain to the tune of 0.16 inches. The current wind direction is from the north northwest, and that usually ushers in some clearing weather. At this point, though, it is still quite humid, and the sky is overcast. From the Nexrad composite radar there appears to be rain around Portland, but it has ended here. The modeling maps seem to indicate that we will gradually clear today, but from what I see outside right now, I have my doubts.
The Weather Stick still points down and looking at the current conditions I am not at all surprised. The electronic instruments are in the same mode they were in last evening, and that is a rainy forecast. I certainly hope they are wrong!

Rain Most Of The Afternoon

It has been raining since around 15:00 hours. Most of the day we have been saddled with stratus clouds and overcast. Now, at 21:00 hours it is still raining. We got a lot done tearing down a shed, but we still have some to go. I shall off load the trailer and stack the wood, but we will be back at it on Monday. Much of our time was spent working in the rain, but it was not very uncomfortable. Tomorrow may be a better day than today for outside work, and we will make use of it.
The instrumentation and indicators are ominous. The Weather Stick points down, and with rain and a 91% humidity that should not shock anyone. The three electronic instruments are calling for deteriorating conditions (I don't know how they could get worse) and rain. Well, that is a no-brainer because it is raining now, and shows no inclination to stop. Go figure.

Rain Continued Into Fog

The thunderstorm of yesterday afternoon continued for a while, dropping over a quarter of an inch of precipitation before it ended. Some ground fog began to show up after the storm was over, and by the time I got outside to do my milk chore, it was fairly thick. It is still the dominant feature this morning. Weather Underground is reporting that we have overcast skies this morning, but I cannot verify that, since I cannot see through the fog. It is quite humid this morning. I feel that I should grow some gills in order to breathe more efficiently.
At 93% relative humidity, the Weather Stick points down. Would we expect it to point up with those conditions? All three of the electronic instruments are also predicting rain in their forecasts. I would guess that I have little choice but to agree with them, and suggest that during the next twelve hours we will probably have some rain.

Donder And Blitzen

At four o' clock we started a thunderstorm here. In less than 15 minutes we had 0.47 inches of rain. That is significant. The rain keeps coming down, so tomorrow morning I will add to the monthly totals. All the indicators said we would have more rain today, and they were correct. Bart is currently curled up at my feet looking very worried. At least he is not trying to hide under the bed as he used to. With age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone.
The Weather Stick points down, and since it is raining and the humidity is up there is no shock there. The three electronic instruments indicate continued rain with deteriorating conditions. Since we are in the middle of a thunderstorm, I would have to agree with them. Oh, the sky is overcast with cumulonimbus clouds. Isn't that a surprise?

And The Rain Came Tumbling Down

This morning we have had almost a quarter of an inch of rain. I have checked the Nexrad Composite Radar and the Model Maps from Wunderground. They both indicate that we are now through with the first round of rainstorms, but we are in for some more during the day today. The relative humidity and dew point have crept up overnight, making things a bit more uncomfortable this morning. According to the model maps tomorrow should be a clear day. We can live in hope.
The Weather Stick points down, as usual. With the relative humidity at 88%, that is no surprise. It is a rare thing when it points up in the morning. All three of the electronic instruments are predicting deteriorating conditions and rain. I guess that we will go with that for today.

An Excellent Finish

This has been another great day. It was warm, but the lower humidity made it feel cooler than the actual temperature. Dew points in the mid-fifties should make it a good night for sleeping. The wind, during the afternoon has been gusty and mainly from the west, and this evening the wind has been light and variable. It was a beautiful day for a bicycle ride, and I did that, and worked on the woodpile as well. From the model maps and composite radar, it appears that we may be in for a bit of rain tomorrow, but that will be all right.
The Weather Stick this afternoon pointed up, as you can see below. The Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console agree that the conditions will deteriorate, and we will have a mixture of sun and clouds. The remote weather station forecasts sun. Now that is a switch. I am betting on some unsettled weather tomorrow.

At 38% Relative Humidity The Weather Stick Points Up

A Good Start

With the dew point in the low fifties, the sleeping was easy. Even though the relative humidity remains at 90%, a pleasant day appears to be at hand. There was some fog visible to the east and west of us, but it did not affect this area. I have already caught one bat this morning and put it outside. They are very good at helping control the mosquito population, as well as other insects. I am not crazy about them, but I don't want to kill them either.
With the relative humidity at 90%, it is no surprise that the Weather Stick points down. There does not seem to be any particular portent to that indicator. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer both indicate improving conditions with sunshine. The remote weather station forecasts a mix of sun and clouds. It does look like it will be another good day.

WOW!!!

This borders on a Ten. What a delightful day for doing anything at all, or nothing at all. I cut up some more wood, cut down some burdock and did some road running. It was a great day for all of the above and more. Before the evening is out, I plan to take a one-hour bike ride. My birds even seemed to like the day.
The instrumentation and indicators all seem to agree. The Weather Stick Points up, and that is no surprise with a relative humidity of 37%. For that reason, the Heat Index is lower than the high temperature because of the very low humidity. Great!
The Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console both indicate improving conditions and sunny weather. The remote weather station is catching up predicting a mix of sun and clouds. That is the closest to total agreement that we have had for a while. It should be a nice day tomorrow. Here I go again putting my foot in it by predicting the unpredictable.

Red Sky Last Evening And This Morning

What do you believe? Today we have a choice. There was a red sky last evening, and another more impressive one this morning. I did my report yesterday before the sunset, so I have no pictures of it, but I got up in time for the sunrise this morning. I have reviewed the model through Saturday, and it appears that we will not have any inclement weather until then. The dew point is down from yesterday, and despite the 91% humidity reading it is not as uncomfortable as it has been lately.
The Weather Stick still points down, and the 91% humidity certainly confirms that. The Weather Station Console and the Min/Max Thermometer indicate improving conditions with sunshine. The remote weather station still forecasts clouds, but that may change before the day is over. I vote for a nice day with lower humidity and bright clear skies.

Showers May Be Over

We have had at least two showers this afternoon accompanied by some thunder and lightning. It still does not appear to have cooled things off as the prognosticators have been saying for the last 2 days. It is still hot and humid, and even the fans are not helping. The dew point is still nearly 70°F, and unless it falls dramatically, we will still have an uncomfortable night. We will continue to struggle with this heat and humidity, and try to get things done that need doing.
The instrumentation and indicators remain at odds. The Weather Stick points straight out, and the humidity is lower. That indicator would seem to say unsettled weather. The Weather Station Console indicates improving conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. The Min/Max Thermometer indicates improving conditions with sunshine. Finally, the remote weather station forecasts clouds. My best guess, then, would be a chance of showers, but conditions improving over the next twelve hours.

Very Dense Fog

The visibility this morning is less than 100 feet. If you must be on the road be careful of Bullwinkle and Bambi. They can be in front of you in a split second, and they can make an awful mess of your vehicle. With the fog, it is still very humid this morning, and the heat has not yet let up. The dew point is still in the mid-sixties, so it is very uncomfortable. According to Weather Underground, the sky is overcast, and since I cannot see through the fog, I need to accept that.
The Weather Stick points down, and with a relative humidity of 91% that is no surprise. Now we get to the confused electronic instruments. The Weather Station Console is predicting deteriorating conditions and rain. The Min/Max Thermometer predicts deteriorating conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. Finally, the remote weather station predicts rain. With the prediction of deteriorating conditions and rain from two out of the three instruments, I would hope that the heat wave will break today, and we will see some drier air ushered in.

A Virtual Carbon Copy Of Yesterday

This air mass certainly seems to be entrenched. There just is not much more to say than hazy, hot and humid. I happened to look at the remote weather station and it was forecasting clouds during the afternoon, but that is back to rain this evening.
The Weather Stick points up, and with a relative humidity of 60% that should not be a surprise. The Weather Station Console shows deteriorating conditions with rain. The Min'/Max Thermometer shows improving conditions with sunshine. The remote weather station predicts rain. I changed the remote weather station, and that was the only change in the instrumentation from last night. The relative humidity is a little higher tonight, and the weather stick is not curved up as much. There may be some rain tomorrow, but I would not count on it.

A Repeat Of Yesterday?

This morning the weather is starting out just as it did yesterday. The fog is both thick and deep. I cannot tell if there are clouds, what type they are and what percentage of the sky is covered. The temperature is at about the same point it was yesterday, as is the dew point. I have heard that today or tomorrow may be the last of this type of weather for a few days. It will be replaced with some, guess what, rain. Oh well, I guess we cannot have everything.
The weather instrumentation is just about as confused as it was last night. First, the Weather Stick points down, and with a 91% humidity that is no surprise. Second, the Weather Station Console still calls for deteriorating conditions with rain. Third, the Min/Max Thermometer indicates the conditions will improve, and the sun will shine. Finally, the remote weather station now forecasts rain instead of clouds. Once again, I will not hazard a guess as to the forecast for today. Unsettled is the best that I can come up with.

Summer With A Vengeance

For all of you that have wished for some wicked hot and humid weather, your wish has been granted. This is the fourth day of the heat wave, and I have heard a prognosticator say that we will have some more of the same tomorrow. In a way, this is very good because it is drying up some of the excess water we have had since May 1. The heat index right now, 18:40 hours, is in the unhealthful range. So you probably should limit heavy exertion for a little while.
Now to the instrumentation. The Weather Stick points up, and with a relative humidity of 40% that should not be a surprise. The Weather Station Console shows deteriorating conditions with rain. The Min'/Max Thermometer shows improving conditions with sunshine. The remote weather station predicts clouds, which it does a lot. 'Nuff Said. Pick the forecast you like, and I hope you get it.

Foggy, Foggy Dew

Everything is so wet this morning due to the fog and the dew. It looks like it has rained, but it has not. We seem to be in a pattern of heat and humidity, and right now, we need a change in air mass. I have looked at the N.O.A.A. forecast map, and it appears that we will not get that change until Wednesday. So we still seem to have about three more days of this kind of weather ahead.
Currently the Weather Stick points down, and with the humidity at 92% that is no surprise. The electronic instruments have not figured out what the weather is going to do. The Weather Station Console predicts deteriorating conditions with rain. The Min/Max Thermometer claims that conditions will improve, but there will be a mix of sun and clouds. Finally, the remote weather station predicts rain in the offing. What do you believe? I would really like to see some rain after I pick up my hay this afternoon. Of course, that said, it will now rain all day. I am such an optimist sometime.

An Official Heat Wave!

This is the third day in a row that the temperature has been above 90°F. By definition, any three-day period where the temperature is above 90 °F is classified as a heat wave. It does not appear that this heat is going to dissipate before Tuesday. We were coming back from Waterville this afternoon, and from the top of Mile Hill in New Sharon, it was not possible to see Mount Blue because of the haze. The dew point is above 70°F, which means that tonight will be even more uncomfortable for sleeping than last night. Oh well, we are having a summer for a change.
The Weather Stick points just slightly up, indicating unsettled weather and maybe just a little drier than it has been. The Min/Max Thermometer calls for improving conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. The Weather Station Console still forecasts deteriorating conditions with rain in its forecast. The remote weather station calls for rain. That agrees with the cirrostratus clouds that are now covering the sky. A bit of rain would be nice, since it might drain some of the humidity out of the atmosphere, and make it a bit more comfortable.

No Relief Today

It appears that the heat and humidity will continue today. The dew point is already above 60°F. Since I started this data set, the humidity has gone up to 91%. There were a few cirrus clouds, giving us a partly cloudy sky this morning. Other than the heat and humidity, we have had a very nice stretch of weather.
The weather stick points down, as usual, but that apparently means the humidity is high. All three of the electronic instruments indicate deteriorating conditions with a probability of rain. When they all agree like this, they are frequently correct.

Humid, Warm And High Dew Point

The dewpoint at 23:45 hours is nearly 65°F. That is going to make for a very uncomfortable night for sleeping. Oh, by the way, the bats are flying again.
I still have not been able to determine where they are coming in, but they visit us every summer. I do not want to kill the critters because they are one of the more effective controls for mosquitoes. Any suggestions on keeping them out of the house would be appreciated.
The weather stick points straight out, indicating unsettled weather. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer both indicate deteriorating conditions and rain, just like this morning. The remote weather station forecasts clouds without rain. Again, I do not know whom to believe, so I will leave it to all of you to make your own decisions.

Humid And Quite Warm

With the dew point, hovering near sixty degrees it is little wonder that it is uncomfortable. We are definitely in the throes of summer. It is nice, though, to hear the birds singing in the early morning sunshine. It certainly beats the pitter-patter of the rain on the roof. That is a sound we heard far too much of during May and June. Now the lawns are responding to all that rain by growing to over a foot high in the matter of a few days. Ahh, we are never satisfied, are we?
The weather stick still points down in the morning, but with a relative humidity of 92% that should be no surprise. The Weather Station Console is predicting continued deteriorating conditions with rain. The Min/Max Thermometer is predicting the same thing. Finally, the remote weather station predicts cloudy weather. Once again, we can select the forecast that suits us. It may not be right, but it is a forecast. As for me, I am not going to take a chance on this one at all.

The Rain Stopped And The Sun Came Out

By 10:00 hours, the rain stopped, and I was able to get the chores done and get some more wood put by. It has been a nice day with a somewhat lower humidity. I can deal with this. Now, if I can get my garden tilled and the lawn mowed I will be in good shape.

10 Hours Of Rain

Overnight we have had almost 0.4 inches of rain. It is still raining, so that may put a crimp in any outdoor activities for this morning. If you are interested, the site to find out even more about weather sticks is www.new-potato.com/wstick. There is quite a bit of information there. My short study is now complete, and, while it is not perfect, there seems to be some correlation between the position of the weather stick and the coming weather. The better correlation is between the weather stick and the relative humidity. When the humidity is up the weather stick is down, and when the humidity is down the weather stick points up.
This morning the weather stick points at the ground, and the relative humidity is at 92%. The rest of the instrumentation is calling for deteriorating conditions with rain. I think they have it right this time.

Rain Began At 19:00 Hours

I guess the portents of the Weather Stick and Red Sky this morning should have been taken seriously. It is still raining, although lightly. The rain has done nothing toward reducing the humidity, making it more comfortable. I did notice today that the bog at the foot of my hill has dried up considerably. It has only taken a week and a half to do so.
The Weather Stick points down. Apparently the cells on one side of the branch used to make the weather stick are more reactive to the relative humidity than on the other side. When the relative humidity is up it causes that side to bend. In nature that would be up, but we have subverted that and it points down. When the atmosphere dries out it bends the other way.
The tree electronic instruments do not agree. The Weather Station Console is forecasting deteriorating conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. Next, the Min/Max Thermometer is calling for deteriorating conditions with rain. Finally, the remote weather station forecasts clouds without rain.

Red Sky This Morning, Take Warning?

This is the first time in a while that we have had a real red sky. The cirrus clouds are frequently an indicator of what is to come. Oh, that indication is for foul weather. I have received a note that there is a site with information on Weather Sticks and how they work. I will visit it and report this evening. It has been interesting to see what correlation there has been between the weather and the forecast of the Weather Stick. It is quite humid this morning, and if I sit here very long I will begin to drip.
The Weather Stick points down, as it usually does in the morning. The electronic instrumentation is totally confused. The Weather Station Console shows improving conditions with sunshine. The Min/Max Thermometer shows deteriorating conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. Finally, the remote weather station forecasts clouds. You have your pick of forecasts for this morning. If we add in the red sky and Mare's Tails and Mackerel Scales, I would guess that the probability of foul weather is pretty good.

Fog, Cloudy, Showers And Partly Cloudy

We have had just about everything today. We had a couple of showers after the fog burned off. There was some thunder. The sky cleared for a little while this afternoon, and now the cirrus clouds are back and it is partly cloudy. All we would have needed would have been some cold air and snow. Thank goodness, that did not happen here.
The weather instruments are totally confused! The weather stick points straight out supposedly indicating unsettled weather. The Weather Station Console indicates improved weather with sunshine. The Min/Max Thermometer indicates deteriorating conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. Finally, the remote weather station forecasts cloudy weather. Anybody for confusion?

Pea Soup Fog

Right now, 05:40 hours the fog is so dense and thick that it is not possible to see the cloud cover above it. The fog is also an indicator of just how humid it is this morning. The other indicator is the way my clothes are sticking to me. I finally got the tree taken care of that I felled two weeks ago, and it is in the wood boiler. It should last a little while, but I do need to get some more, and quickly.
The weather instruments and indicators are definitely confused. The Weather Stick, once again, points down, and that should indicate deteriorating weather, but, since it does that almost every morning, I am not so sure. The Weather Station Console calls for improving, but unsettled weather. The Min/Max Thermometer calls for improving weather with sunny skies. Finally, the remote weather station is forecasting clouds. We have a choice of whom we believe.

Thundershowers

We had a thundershower around noon today. It did not last long, but there was enough rain to measure. It really did not do anything for the humidity. It is still sticky and close around here. It does look like we might have another one before the day is out, and the radar looks that way too. We have some cumulus clouds and maybe some cumulus nimbus clouds. The net result is that we are overcast this evening.
The Weather Stick points up indicating good weather, we hope. The Min/Max Thermometer is mixed up, and that is the forecast, unsettled, but improving. The Weather Station Console is calling for rain, and the remote weather station is back to clouds.

Clouds Moving Back In

Everything is such a verdant green. The lawn is almost a foot high, which means that not only does it need to be mowed, but this time it must also be swept. Maybe I will be able to get a restart on the garden. I have to try. The wood is a no-brainer. Finally, training for the M.S. 150 is a given. Without the training, it will be a pretty miserable ride. All of these things depend on the weather. If there is a lot of rain again, it will make them impossible to accomplish.
The Weather Stick, for four out of the last five mornings, pointed down. This is supposed to indicate stormy weather, but it has not. The Weather Station Console forecasts deteriorating conditions, with storms in the near future. The Min/Max Thermometer forecasts the same thing this morning. Finally, the remote weather station forecasts clouds and rain for our near future. At this point, all I can do is hope that they are wrong, and that my plans for the day will bear fruit.

Still Hazy Hot And Humid

Yes, it is still hazy hot and humid, and the clouds have moved back into the area. We did safely deliver our friends to the airport for their return to Louisiana. It was a great week, and we could not have ordered better weather from the Chamber of Commerce for their visit. We hope to see them again in the not-too-distant future. A brief continuation of this weather would be helpful in, lawn care, Garden care and wood procurement. I am preparing for the M.S. 150, so some decent weather there would also be helpful.
The Weather Stick, as you can see, points up, hopefully indicating continued nice weather. The Weather Station Console is predicting deteriorating conditions with rain. The Min/Max Thermometer also predicts deteriorating conditions with rain. Finally, the remote weather station forecasts rain. Great, all we need is more rain!!

Hazy, Hot And Humid

This morning we are having a typical summer morning. It is hazy, hot and humid. The humidity is up to the point that the ground fog has formed over the last fifteen minutes. This had been an incredible weather week. Truly, it has been Chamber of Commerce Weather. Our friends from Louisiana are leaving today, and we hope they have enjoyed their stay. We saw and did many things that it is not possible to do during the fall and winter.
The picture of the weather stick shows it pointed down, potentially indicative of foul weather moving in. All three electronic instruments currently predict foul weather. Now, that is unusual to say the least. I guess this is a test of all the instrumentation. This afternoon will tell the tale.

Why, Yes It Was!!

First, we had no rain. It did get warm, over 90°F, and the heat index was even higher than that. It was humid as well, and even now the relative humidity is 78%. Next, I was able to go get my grain. Finally, I was able to cut up some wood. This was a very productive day.
The Weather Stick, as you can see, pointed up at 18:00 hours, and that should portend good weather. The Weather Station Console indicates deteriorating conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. The Min/Max indicates the same conditions. Finally the remote weather station calls for, guess what, clouds. I am beginning to believe that not at all.

Another Great Day?

The barometric pressure has risen a bit over yesterday putting high pressure firmly in control of our area. It is a bit warmer, and a bit more humid than it was yesterday, so I do not know where that will take us. The pattern is continuing with great weather during the day and comfortable sleeping weather at night. I think everyone here has slept very well this week.
The Weather Station Console is calling for the nice weather to continue. The Min/Max Thermometer says the weather will deteriorate into a mix of sun and clouds. The remote weather station tenaciously holds onto its forecast of cloudy weather. With the high barometer and clear sky, I tend to like the clear forecast of sun continuing. Of course, the Weather Stick points down, as you can see in the picture below.

Great Day

What a gorgeous day this was. My friend from Louisiana went fishing with me, and we actually caught a few bass over at the Belgrade Lakes. We could not have asked for a better day. In fact, with just a few sprinkles, this has been the best week of the season in terms of the weather.
The weather stick, again as you can see, points up, and this time it appears to have it right. A beautiful day was had over this entire area. The Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station Console also agree with the forecast assessment. The only instrument that remains out of sync with the others is the remote weather station, which is calling for cloudy weather.

Humidity Is Back Up

I saw just a few clouds on the eastern horizon this morning, but the sky was 99% clear. It does appear that we are getting into a dry pattern for a change. I find it as hard to believe this weather as it was to believe the weather of May and June. I am not complaining. This is wonderful. It is definitely humid again this morning, but that is all right, at least it is not raining, and the dew will dry off the grass. We do have a very high barometer, and that should portend well for the weather for today.
The weather stick this morning points down as you can see in the photo. That is not what one would expect with a forecast of clear weather. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer are forecasting improving weather with sunshine. I do not know how much better it can get, unless the relative humidity goes way down. The remote weather station predicts clouds, but then it seems to predict clouds more than anything else does.

Dew point Is Down

For the first time I have gone to Lake Kennebago to try the fishing. I had a few bites, but this time nothing to show for the effort. My fishing partner and I had a good time though. We may try another lake tomorrow. When we got there the sky closed in, and we thought we were going to get very wet. The clouds parted though, and we had a beautiful day. The temperatures there were only in the mid to upper sixties, and it was fantastic.
The weather stick, as you can see, points straight out. The Weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer are both forecasting sunny weather. The remote weather station still forecasts cloudy weather. We shall see,

Still Humid And Still Overcast

There was no red sky this morning, but then, neither was there a "visible” sunrise. It has not rained, but it is still quite humid at 81%. Today may be a good day to go fishing, and I think I will. Since many of us have weather sticks for conversation pieces, or just for comic relief, I thought it might be interesting to look at the weather stick morning and evening. I am using the one nailed to my carriage house (east side) as the example. You can check yours against mine to see how they compare to one another and to the weather, we are having. I will do this for a week, just as a point of interest.
This morning the Weather Stick points straight out, and that usually indicates unsettled weather, or at least that is what it is supposed to mean. The Weather Station console shows improving conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. The remote weather station is forecasting a cloudy day. Finally, the Min/Max Thermometer is forecasting sunshine with improved conditions. What a day to start this study. None of the instruments are in agreement. Well, why not?

Clear, Clouds, Clear

That is the way the weather has gone today. We had periods early this morning that it was clear, followed by periods of clouds. There was no rain, but after a time the sky cleared again. The instruments certainly did not get it right today. I have to wonder about the overnight. All the instruments are calling for improving conditions, or at the best clouds. With the humidity where it is, the barometric pressure where it is and the lack of wind, my best guess is that things will not change very much. We may or may not have a nice day tomorrow. I am just being non-committal.

Still Humid, But Clear Sky

As I sit here trying to write this commentary I am getting wetter by the minute. The humidity is so high that everything is sticking to me. The sky is very clear, so I am holding out hope that some of the humidity sill dissipate over the day. That may be a vain hope since the relative humidity is already up another percent since I started this. If nothing else, it is a pretty morning.
The weather stick as usual is down, so that is no indicator. The Weather Station Console indicates deteriorating conditions with storms in our future. The Min/Max Thermometer and remote weather station are both indicating the same thing. Therefore, I would probably not be wrong in calling for some storms today. It does seem like it is too pretty a morning to have storms in our near future.

Humid, Overcast And Showers

Today has not been one of the best 4th of Julys that I have ever seen. The sun tried to come out at one point, but it just did not make it. It has remained over cast most of the day, and it looks like that is going to continue. I would not be surprised with the overcast to see some rain before the night is over. Now that is just what we need.
The weather stick points down, and all the weather instruments call for rain. Guess what my prediction is?
Just so you know, this entry was ready at 18:00 hours yesterday evening. It did not get put in because Verizon DROPPED THE CALL! For over 4 hours I was unable to contact Verizon or connect to my ISP. This was, according to Verizon, due to an equipment failure.

Humid, Shower And Warm

As I stepped outside to check on the weather stick, It started to shower, but that shower is already over, and the sun is trying to come out. It is a great deal more humid today than it was yesterday, but actually, that is all right. This is, after all, July, and it is supposed to get humid sometime. I do not know if these showers will continue all day, or if they will be hit or miss. My best guess is that they will not totally dampen the holiday. I will, therefore, wish you a Happy Independence Day. Remember what we are celebrating, the declaration of Independence from a despotic King of England that was abusing people too far away for him to control.
The weather indicators and instruments are all over the place, so we have our choice of forecasts. The Weather Stick points down. The Weather Station Console indicates improving conditions with sun. The remote weather station is calling for rain, and the Min/Max Thermometer says we will have a mix of sun and clouds with deteriorating weather. If you pick one you have a one in four chance of being right. I am not selecting any of them.

Continued Fair Weather

This was a delightful day. It did dawn clear and bright, and that weather has continued all day. It did get up to 90.3°F, or a little more, and with the low humidity it was fantastic, That appears to be key to the great weather today. Just so, everyone knows we were out and about yesterday, and I did not get this done. Fortunately, I can go back and get the snapshot in time, and this one came from 18:00 hours yesterday afternoon. There really is nothing more that we can say to describe the day. It was beautiful, and that is it.
The instruments, with the exception of the remote weather station, called for improved weather with sunshine. The weather stick pointed up, and the remote weather station called for clouds. I guess it was trying to call for a nice night.

Starting Out Fairly Again

Right now we are experiencing some of the lowest morning humidity readings I can recall lately. It made it extremely pleasant for sleeping last night. There was some sort of incident around 22:00 last evening that made life interesting. We lost power for several hours. It seems that it was not a weather related phenomenon that caused the general power failure over the town of Wilton. Fortunately, we have a generator to maintain some of our electronics. The computer was not turned on after the outage, so uploads to NOAA, AWEKAS and Weather Underground were lost for the period of the outage and beyond. Again, fortunately the Weather Station Console keeps up to 175 sets of data, so there was no loss of data. All is in order now, since the sun is out, the Robins are singing, and the humidity is in the delightful range.
The weather stick points up, which is unusual in the morning, so maybe it is calling for a nice day. Two of the electronic instruments indicate improved conditions with sunshine. The remote weather station intimates that we will have a cloudy day. You have a choice of whom you want to believe. I think I will go with the improved conditions and Sunshine.

July 2nd, Not A Bad Day

Of course, any day that one can spend fishing is better than doing almost anything else. We spent a couple hours fishing, and later in the afternoon had a barbecue. All of this was made possible by the fair weather. There were periods of overcast, after the morning rain, and there were periods of sun. I would guess that a new air mass is in place, since it became cooler and drier since this morning. We had a good time. The only data I was unable to preserve was the forecast on each of the electronic instruments, I will not, therefore, report them.

Back To June

Would you believe it is raining again? I really thought that the pattern had been broken yesterday. Was I mistaken? This rain started about a half hour ago, and while it is gentle, it is still there. It is making the woods wet, the grass wet, and most disappointedly the garden wet. This means that any thought of getting outside to get any work done, other than the regular chores, will be well nigh impossible.
The indicators and instruments are not holding out a lot of hope. First, there is the rain that can be seen, felt and heard. Next is the weather stick pointing down indicating at best unsettled weather. Third is the remote weather station forecasting rain for the immediate future. Finally are the Min/Max Thermometer and Weather Station console indicating deteriorating conditions and, at best, unsettled weather. Do you wonder at the title of "Back To June"?

Wrong Again

This morning as we all know, it dawned bright and clear. Around 1 o’clock, we did have a shower, but there was not enough rain to measure. We met some friends in Portland and drove through several small showers, but they did not affect us here. That is about all I have to report this evening. The data that I have reported here is from 18:00 hours. I will be back a little later in the morning for the next installment.
The weather instrumentation is all calling for deteriorating conditions with a chance of unsettled weather. At least it is not calling for frank rain. This will be another day.

June Summary

With 9.11 inches of rain this month was terrible. We had 20 days with rain or showers. Can somewone explain that? That certainly did not leave a lot of time to work in gardens or get wood in for the winter. Three of the days were taken up by the Trek Across Maine, and they were three of the best days in the month. This is a new month, and maybe it will be a better one.

A New Month A New Pattern

My 5-year weather diary starts with the following: "If the first of July it be rainy weather, 'Twill Rain more or less for four weeks together. --Folk saying” I think that with 8.95 inches of rain during the month of June we have had enough. It is time for some dry weather. We need to get rid of the webs between our fingers and toes. I feel a bit like an amphibian. Despite the 90% humidity right now (05:22) it is very comfortable. Even though we have a light red sky this morning I do not believe it portends rain.
Here is how the indicators and instruments see the forecast. The weather stick, as usual, points down, but that does not seem to mean anything. What it does later may mean more. The weather Station Console and Min/Max Thermometer are both indicating improving conditions with a mix of sun and clouds. The remote weather station indicates cloudy weather. I can accept either or both of those forecasts. At least it is not calling for rain as it has during the month of June.
