Starting Out Overcast This Morning.

We had no further rain overnight, but what we had was impressive. I misspoke last night. We recorded the highest rainfall/day at 1.36 inches and the highest rate per hour at 1.14 inches/hour for the month of August. Overnight the temperature dropped into the mid-sixties, and the relative humidity remained quite high at 92%. The overcast from the frontal boundary that brought us the thunderstorm has not progressed very far according to the NEXRAD radar. The line of storms appears to be at the level of Augusta, Maine, and there are still some light showers around the area. They appear to be sagging south, but moving northeast.
For today, the N.W.S. forecasts light scattered showers for the forenoon, and no precipitation for this afternoon. The cloud cover is supposed to decrease during the day (82%/72%/63%/59%) for our area as the front gradually moves into the Gulf of Maine. According to the Weather Underground model forecast maps that should happen by 18:00 hours this afternoon.
My Weather Stick is frowning again. It just does not like 92% relative humidity. My electronic instruments are all calling for partly cloudy skies today. (I just heard quite a rumble of thunder.) My Weather Station calls for the barometric pressure to fall, while the other two instruments indicate rising barometric pressure. With the storm cells still around it could go either way. Until this front gets off shore I think we will continue to have the chance of an isolated shower, along with the rumble of thunder and the flash of lightning. I guess my forecast is for unsettled weather this morning, with improvement this afternoon, if the front moves offshore.

The N.W.S had the forecast temperature within five degrees of the actual temperature in Wilton, Maine for all of the four periods overnight. Surprise of surprises they also got the relative humidity within 5% of the recorded data for all four periods overnight. That is the first time in quite a while that they have done that. They get Kudos for this one. I wonder if they can repeat.

The Red Sky This Morning Was Right.

We did have a red sky this morning, and we did have a downpour, gulley washer, frog chocker of a thunderstorm starting around 16:20 this afternoon. I did well to get and put into the hay mow my second load of hay (now 96 bales in house). Two more loads should do it. That thunderstorm, by the way had the heaviest hourly rainfall this month (1.36 inches/hour). That also takes our rainfall total for the month to over 4.1 inches. That is significant. I understand there are areas of Wilton and Farmington that had half inch diameter hail from this storm, but we, near Pease Pond in Wilton, Maine, did not have any of that.
For the overnight, N.O.A.A. predicts rain for the first half followed by light scattered showers for the second half. Right now, 23:00 hours, it is still raining. The line of storms on the NEXRAD radar is still sinking south as it moves east, and it is doing so slowly. That is what is predicted on the Weather Underground model forecast maps. They also predict that the rain should stop completely, and the storms move out of our area by around midnight.
My Weather Stick is frowning. Let us see, 91% relative humidity, frowning, hmmmm. I guess that is a no-brainer. There is some confusion among my electronic instruments. My Weather Station sees rising barometric pressure with fair skies. Both the Min/Max Thermometer and my remote weather station forecast partly cloudy skies with rising barometric pressure. I guess that also is a no-brainer. Cooler weather should follow these storms.

The N.W.S had the forecast temperature within five degrees of the actual temperature in Wilton, Maine for all three of the four periods today. I guess the thunderstorm caught them off guard. They could not manage to get one of the relative humidity readings correct. Once again they did not do a good job with this parameter. No kudos here.

No Showers Scattered Or Otherwise Here!

Overnight, as noted above, we had no precipitation here with the exception of some light ground fog. I was a little late rising this morning, but the sun was not (good thing) and it came up as a ball of fire. If the harbinger is to be believed we should take warning due to the red sky. That sky was essentially clear (I did see one very small cloud in the northeast sky), so I am not sure where the estimate of cloud cover (71%/71%/70%/75%) for today came from. It was a good night to catch forty winks though. The air remains hazy at this point (07:15 hours).
For today N.O.A.A. forecasts light scattered showers for our area of Wilton, Maine, and the cloud cover noted above would support that, if indeed it is accurate. I looked at the NEXRAD radar site, and there are some showers showing up. They seem to be moving in a northeasterly direction, and while they seem to be affecting northern Maine, they do not appear to be moving with a direct enough easterly vector to affect us here. If your are wondering why I mention Wilton in my reports, I understand that my reports are read in some far flung places, and that way they can locate what area the report is referring to.
My Weather Stick is frowning again at the 88% relative humidity. Two of the electronic instruments forecast foul weather for today. All three of them forecast falling barometric pressure. The remote weather station only sees cloudy skies in its forecast for today. Based on what is going on outside my house, and the Weather Underground model forecast maps I am going to suggest that we will have a decent day until around mid-afternoon. We may then see some scattered showers around the area lasting until around midnight. Talk about sticking my neck out, but the turtle never gets ahead unless it sticks its neck out. Enjoy this one. It does appear that we may have another high pressure system following this frontal line.

The N.W.S had the forecast temperature within five degrees of the actual temperature in Wilton, Maine for all four periods overnight. Just Another In A String Of Delightful Days!

I was all set to clean a couple of stalls today when I decided to check to see if I could acquire hay for the winter. I went to my regular supplier, and indeed he did have hay that I could procure. I estimate that I need 180 bales for the winter, based on previous use. The first 43 are now in my hay mow, stacked and ready for the winter. I still have 4 stalls to clean, but they will be OK for the present. By the way, as I was starting this last night I fell asleep at the computer, so it is a little late. The weather today was outstanding for any outdoor activity. It did get a little warm, but not terribly uncomfortable. N.O.A.A. did get the predominant weather correct, and the cloud cover as well. Nice job.
For the overnight the N.W.S. forecasts fair weather for the first half, with light scattered showers for the second half. I did check the NEXRAD radar, and found some echoes well west of us, moving in a northeasterly direction. I am not sure that they will affect our area of Wilton, Maine. The Weather Underground model forecast maps do not indicate any precipitation until sometime tomorrow afternoon. We shall see who is right.
My Weather Stick is straight faced in response to the 78% relative humidity. The remote weather station and Min/Max Thermometer indicate unsettled weather with falling barometric pressure. My Weather Station forecasts foul weather with falling barometric pressure as well. I do not think we will have any rain, because there does not seem to be sufficient cloud cover to support it. I think it will be a bit warmer and more humid tonight than it has been, but not an altogether bad weather event.

A Foggy Greeting This Morning.

In a couple of days we will begin to count the foggy mornings to give us an idea of what we can expect for "significant snowstorms" for the winter. For now, we can just look outside and see that it is indeed foggy, and that N.O.A.A. did not predict it for this area of Wilton, Maine. They did predict the low cloud cover though Despite the high relative humidity it was a comfortable night for sleeping. By the way, if you do not think Autumn is on the way just look at the Maple trees and note the change in the color of the leaves.
100b4550.jpg
Autumn Is Coming, It Is Unstoppable
For today, the N.W.S. suggests that there will be no precipitation, but the cloud cover will increase over the day (5%/16%/26%/37%). This is in preparation for the passage of a front that is supposed to pass through this area tomorrow afternoon. That front is expected to touch off some showers, but we shall see about that tomorrow.
My Weather Stick is frowning at the 89% relative humidity. My Weather Station is forecasting partly cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer is forecasting fair skies with rising barometric pressure. Finally the remote weather station, like the WS 2308 weather station is forecasting partly cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure. My take on all of this is that we can expect to see the barometric pressure fall, and clouds movie in gradually. We will probably have no rain today, and maybe not tonight. Tomorrow may be a very different matter. I have some errands to run this morning, but I still hope to get two more stalls cleaned in the barn. As has been noted before, you do not own a farm, it owns you. You have to love it!

Once again this was not a good showing for their capability to prognosticate temperature and relative humidity.

Under A Clear, Blue Summer Sky!

For today the N.W.S. forecast no precipitation and very little cloud cover. They were right on both accounts. The sky, all day was the clearest and the bluest I have seen in a very long time. It was such a great day that I was able to trim Daisy and Minerva's hooves. I also cleaned the calves stall and James' Stall. The claves were funny when I put the shavings down. They literally rolled in them to spread them around the stall.

Brownspot in the cleaned stall
100b4620.jpg
Inkspot in the cleaned stall
They are eating between 25 and 30 pounds of grain per day plus hay and a gallon of goat milk apiece. It is no wonder they are growing rapidly.
For the overnight, the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation with zero cloud cover until 05:00 hours when it is supposed to increase to 10%. There is still a shower on the Canadian side of Lake Erie, and the only change is that it appears to be less intense. There is nothing else on the NEXRAD radar, or the Portland/Gray radar either. The forecast is for a calm night.
My Weather Stick is smiling a little bit, and with 71% relative humidity I am too. My Weather Station sees falling barometric pressure with a mix of clear and cloudy skies. The Min/Max Thermometer sees fair skies with rising barometric pressure. The remote weather station forecasts a mix of clear and cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure. I think the Min/Max Thermometer has it right along with the N.W.S., and we will have a nice night with comfortable temperatures and almost no cloud cover. This should give us the opportunity for some real radiational cooling.

No Lunar Eclipse In Wilton, Maine!

The fog was so thick this morning during the time that we would have been able to observe the Corn Moon Lunar Eclipse that it was not even possible to see the moon. We did have a pleasant night with the temperature reaching the high forties, even though the relative humidity remained quite high. Is it any wonder that we had fog since around 02:00 hours this morning. It does appear that the N.W.S. had the predominant weather forecast correct.
For today, N.O.A.A. forecasts no precipitation with very low cloud cover (13%/9%/12%/11%). There is a shower cell on the Canadian side of Lake Erie, but it does not seem to have moved. I do not believe it will affect us. The Weather Underground model forecast maps also show us in the clear for today. It looks like we will have another day to work outside, and that is good.
My Weather Stick has responded appropriately to the high humidity by frowning. Two of the electronic instruments are calling for fair skies with rising barometric pressure. The remote weather station also calls for rising barometric pressure, but with a mix of sun and clouds. I think we will have another day like yesterday, and that will allow me to get quite a bit done outside. At least I do not have a lot of errands to run, which would make serious demands on the time I have for tasks that I need to finish.

This Was A Beautiful Late Summer Day!

This was an excellent day to be outside, and the goats were. I needed to have the two new ones disbudded, and that cost me almost 3 hours of beautiful time to work outside. N.O.A.A. said it was going to be a great day with very low cloud cover, and indeed it was.
For the overnight the N.W.S. is calling for no precipitation for the first half of the night and fog for the second half. That may make it difficult to see the lunar eclipse of the Corn Moon tomorrow morning. I am going to try to set up my video camcorder, and if it is not too foggy I will try to record it, then do some outtakes for pictures to submit. I have not tried this before, but I understand it can be done. The cloud cover is expected to increase slightly (0%/10%/20%/28%), but there does not seem to be any chance for precipitation overnight.
My Weather Stick is almost straight, but slightly down, responding to the 83% relative humidity. All three of the electronic instruments indicate rising barometric pressure and fair skies. Who am I to argue with all these indicators? I think we will have a good night, but fog in the morning. Sorry, for all those of you (including me) that wanted to see the Lunar Eclipse.

A Foggy, Foggy Dew.

When I first stepped outside at 05:30 the air was as clear as a bell. By the time I started writing this report we had gone through almost 2 hours of fog, and it is burning off. So we are once again back to clear air. N.O.A.A. predicted no precipitation and dissipating sky cover, and they were right overnight. We had no rain, but the grass is very wet, and so is everything that was not under cover. At 92% it is still quite humid, but that should go down as the day progresses.
For this morning the N.W.S. forecasts fog to start and no precipitation for the rest of the day. The radar sites also show no storms in our immediate future, and the Weather Underground model forecast maps call for fair skies today. I think we can all accept that after this weekend. Just a note, tomorrow morning, just before it sets, there will be a total eclipse of the moon. We, here in Maine, will have about 2 minutes to observe this phenomenon.
My Weather Stick is frowning again, and with 92% relative humidity I cannot really blame it. That level of humidity makes me frown too. My electronic instruments are now in agreement. They all call for fair skies with rising barometric pressure. Who am I to argue? I too will call for fair skies with pleasant temperatures, low cloud cover (13%/12%/10%/10%) and lower relative humidity. This should be an 11 on a scale of 10. (P.S. Joke)

Red Sky And Less Humid Tonight!

This evening, as the sun was setting, the sky was quite red, a harbinger of a nice day tomorrow. Not only that, but also the air felt cooler and much less humid. N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct today, it was hazy this morning, and then the haze dissipated leaving us with partly cloudy skies, but much lower humidity.
For the overnight the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation with decreasing cloud cover (42%/32%/21%/17%). From the top of the hill by the Douglas farm it was possible to see a line to the north where I expect the front was, and it seemed to be moving toward us. There are no storm cells moving toward us according to the NEXRAD regional radar, and the Weather Underground model forecast maps are clear through tomorrow.
My Weather Stick is frowning just a little as a result of the 85% relative humidity. My electronic instruments are beginning to fall into line. The Min/Max thermometer and Weather Station are calling for fair skies with rising barometric pressure. The remote weather station forecasts fluctuating weather with a rising barometer. I would believe that we have turned the corner on this system, and are headed for high pressure with clear skies.

It Is Still Hazy, Hot And Humid!

We had another shower overnight that started at about 22:30. That storm knocked me off line from 22:45 until around 01:00 hours, so my rainfall total is probably slightly off, by as much as 0.25 inches based on my analog rain gauge. So our total rainfall for the month of August is 2.75 inches. N.O.A.A. did have the predominant weather correct, in that, we did have more showers after the first one I reported. By the way the light show that was produced by that first one was impressive. If we should have another such storm I will need to use my video recorder to get some footage of the lightning, and then pick individual frames to include with the next report. That will be a bit of a challenge for me.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts hazy conditions to start the day until around noontime, and no precipitation for the rest of the day. There is a batch of precipitation south and west of us that appears to be moving in our direction, but I am not sure it will reach us. The Weather Underground model forecast maps do not indicate any additional rain moving toward us at this point.
My Weather Stick is frowning, and as sticky and hot as it is right now I am too. As I have heard it often said, "When it is cold you can always put on another layer, but when it is hot there is just so much you can take off and be socially acceptable." Right now my electronic instruments cannot agree on anything. My Weather Station sees the barometric pressure rising, and that with partly cloudy skies. My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts foul weather with falling barometric pressure. Finally, the remote weather station sees cloudy conditions with steady barometric pressure. As I look out my west facing window I see partly cloudy skies with cirrus clouds, but a good bit of sunshine. I think the conditions will improve as the day goes on with the hazy, hot and humid conditions giving way to cooler and drier conditions.

The N.W.S had the forecast temperature within five degrees of the actual temperature in Wilton, Maine for tall four periods. They missed the first and last overnight forecast relative humidity data points. They missed two of the eight recorded data points. Once again, I am not sure we are getting fair value for our tax dollars, and they want us to donate to the "findu" web site. As long as their forecasting accuracy is at this level I do not think throwing money at them will improve their accuracy.

Now The Thunder Storms Have Arrived!

The N.W.S. said we would have light scattered showers all day. Well, we did not. It was hot, and it was humid, but I was able to get outside to do some more yard work. With the exception of mowing around the weed patch, the lawn is done. I think I may be able to get that done tomorrow. I will work on the garden for part of the day, and I will empty at least one stall during the rest of it.
N.O.A.A. forecast some severe weather for the 20:00 hour time period. Indeed we did have one heck of a thunder shower. We received 0.22 inches of rain, and at 20:03 we had a wind gust of 33.7 mph. The NEXRAD radar indicates that we are not done with the frontal line of showers yet, so expect a bit more as the night progresses. That is their forecast for the rest of the night, light scattered showers. They claim the cloud cover will decrease until 02:00 hours, and then bounce back up a bit (88%/76%/63%/71%).
My Weather Stick is frowning, and so am I at 86% relative humidity. My Weather Station forecasts improving conditions to partly cloudy skies with rising barometric pressure. The other two electronic instruments forecast foul weather with falling barometric pressure. I think the front will be moving through bringing us cooler, drier air and higher barometric pressure. That is based on the Weather Underground model forecast maps, and what I have seen of the frontal line on the NEXRAD regional radar. We will see how Wilton, Maine fares in the morning.

Hazy, Hot And Humid!

After last week we may have considered summer over, well, it is not giving up without a fight. Yesterday we had lots of clouds, and a threat, but not reality of rain. Overnight the humidity remained quite high, and we did have 0.02 inches of fresh rain early on. That brings our total for the month to 2.22 inches of rain. That agrees with my analog rain gauge. So, N.O.A.A. did have the predominant weather correct, as well as the cloud cover.
For today the N.W.S. predicts light scattered showers again with a cloud cover to match (58%/60%/62%/69%). Right now (09:00) we do have sunshine, but there is some haze or fog and some cirrus clouds. The NEXRAD regional radar shows some storms at the border between Vermont and New Hampshire, and they appear to be moving, slowly, toward us. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that we may well see showers showing up around 15:00 this afternoon, and those lasting well into tonight.
My Weather Stick is frowning again, and so am I with 92% relative humidity. Two of my electronic instruments forecast foul weather with falling barometric pressure. The remote weather station is stuck on clouds with steady barometric pressure. I think we will see some instability in the atmosphere resulting in some storms this afternoon. I also think, based on the Weather Underground forecast maps that once these storms get past us we will see the relative humidity drop, and some dry Canadian air filter in, making things much more comfortable. That would be late Sunday or Monday.

Clouds And Showers Today

This was a good day to start on file rebuilding. There was the constant threat of showers, but any rain that did fall was too light to measure until just a few minutes ago. This will be recorded in tomorrow morning's report. It was also a good morning to sleep in, and I did exactly that. Since we did not have any measurable rain today I cannot in good conscience say that N.O.A.A. got the predominant weather correct. The cloud cover was about where they said it would be.
For the overnight the N.W.S. is again calling for light scattered showers, and we are having one right now. The NEXRAD regional radar shows a shower right over Wilton, Maine, and we are having it. The Weather Underground model forecast maps still indicate that the rain will not abate until sometime tomorrow afternoon, if then.
My Weather Stick is frowning a little this evening, and that in response to the 82% relative humidity. I know my shirt is wet from the warmer temperatures and higher relative humidity. My electronic instruments are calling for falling barometric pressure, and indeed it has fallen since this morning. Two of them are calling for foul weather, while the remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions. Oh well, as I have said before, we cannot have rain with out clouds, and it is raining. I think we will see the showers continue overnight. They may be scattered, and I did hear the rumble of thunder just before the rain started, so thunder showers are not out of the question.

A Gray Day!

It appears that today will be another gray day, like yesterday, but with a better chance of rain. This system has taken its time getting here, so we can expect it to take a while to leave. Rain started this morning around 03:00 hours, and the first shower ended around 03:45 hours. We had another one that started around 05:30 and ended at 05:45. These have provided us with another 0.19 inches of rain. These showers started much later than the N.W.S. thought they would, and a little later than the Weather Underground model forecast maps suggested they would.
The N.W;.S. forecasts light scattered showers all day with slowly decreasing cloud cover (99%/91%/88%/83%), although I am not sure I can tell the difference between 99% and 83% unless I had some sort of specialized light meter. The NEXRAD regional radar and Portland/Gray local radar are picking up some showers still to our west. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate a brief break in the action with more to come as well, possibly into tomorrow morning.
My Weather Stick is frowning again, and with relative humidity over 90%, I am frowning too. All three of my electronic instruments forecast falling barometric pressure. The remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions, while the other two forecast foul weather. I suspect we will see more rain before the day is over.

The Clouds Are Here, But No Precipitation Yet!

As I finished mowing my lawn at about 16:30 hours I felt just a few drops of precipitation. No, I was not standing under the weeping willow trees. I still need to mow around the garden and the other side of the driveway, but that can wait until the foul weather ends. I spent the morning getting the lawnmower fixed, but it worked like a charm today. I guess that few drops of rain that I felt constitute a light scattered shower making the N.W.S. prediction correct. The cloud cover remained at the predicted level of 85% or more all day, so they got that one right also.
For tonight the forecast from the N.W.S. is for light scattered showers for the entire period with the cloud cover increasing from 94% to 96% to 99% and remaining there until dawn, at least. There is precipitation moving toward us on the NEXRAD radar, and according to the Weather Underground model forecast maps should arrive here around midnight tonight.
My Weather Stick is still frowning slightly at the 78% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments are forecasting falling barometric pressure. My Weather Station forecasts rain in our near future. The other two forecast a mix of cloudy and clear skies, or maybe just partly cloudy skies. The other term I have seen used is fluctuating weather. Maybe that is better, or unsettled would be best. My guess is that we will have rain by morning, but the temperature will not fall very far because we have the blanket of clouds, and a warm front is moving in bringing this weather.

The Clouds Have Moved In!

N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct overnight, right down to the increase in the cloud cover. We had no rain or fog this morning. There was not even any dew on the grass. With any luck at all I will get the lawn mowed today, and possibly get started on the garden. It is in horrible need of help, with some of the weeds as tall as I am. I keep saying, "I am an army of one." I do what I can do, and the rest will be there when I can get to it. The sun rose into a cloudy sky this morning, and there was a bit of red as it came up. That may portend some rain in our near future.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts 85% cloud cover all day, with no precipitation before noon, and light scattered showers this afternoon. There are some showers showing up at the western border of New York state, but they should not affect us today. According to the Weather Underground model forecast maps we should not see any precipitation until around midnight tonight, and then we appear to be in for about 24 hours of foul weather.
My Weather Stick is frowning, but only slightly in response to the 81% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments currently forecast partly cloudy skies or fluctuating conditions if you prefer. As usual, the longer it takes for a weather system to arrive, the longer it will take for it to depart. Based on the radar images and model forecast maps, as well as the conditions outside my window, I think we will escape the rain during the day, but tonight will be a very different story.

Will this Be The Last In The String?

The weather since Saturday has been phenomenal. It has been cool, dry, and bright and precipitation free. It certainly has been fantastic to work outside. I have taken care of 6 tons + of wood, trimmed my fence line, so the goats will stay where they belong, worked on my lawnmower and done a myriad of other small jobs that needed attention. N.O.A.A. and I had the predominant weather correct, and I would even agree with the cloud cover estimates that were made.
For the overnight, the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation, but the cloud cover is forecast to increase (33%/54%/75%/81%) by morning in advance of a warm front that has been held at bay by the high pressure system we have had over us since Saturday. There is no precipitation showing up on the NEXRAD radar at this time, and the Weather Underground model forecast maps do not show any foul weather until sometime Friday. I guess that tomorrow is being forecast as a day of transition from the gorgeous weather we have been having to some not so nice weather we will have for the next couple of days. We shall find out all in good time.
My Weather Stick is smiling and with 65% relative humidity I am smiling too. It is pleasant. I find no agreement among my electronic instruments. My Weather Station forecasts partly cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts fair skies and rising barometric pressure. My remote weather station forecasts partly cloudy skies with steady barometric pressure. I like the Min/Max Thermometer's forecast, but I believe the Weather Station. I think we will see some deterioration in our weather over the next twenty-four hours, and that will be followed by some rain, and at this point we probably could use some.

Once Again Starting With Fog This Morning!

Visibility Under 200 Feet This Morning (06:30)
I am sure that Bullwinkle or Bambi's Father will be out and about, so be careful if you need to be on the road early this morning. N.O.A.A. was correct about having no precipitation overnight, but having fog early this morning. The temperature is also in the low forties here, and that too was predicted.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts another stellar day with no precipitation, but the cloud cover is expected to be on the increase (0%/8%/15%/24%) through the afternoon. There is no precipitation showing up on either the NEXRAD radar or local (Portland/Gray) radar. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate the weather will not deteriorate until around 03:00 Friday morning. Tomorrow I guess we can expect a slow deterioration with temperatures still on the cool side, clouds on the increase and a chance for some light scattered showers.
My Weather Stick is frowning again, and with 88% relative humidity can you blame it? All three of my electronic instruments forecast a partly cloudy day. Two of them indicate that the barometric pressure will fall. The remote weather station indicates that the barometric pressure will remain steady. Based on what I see outside, I think we will have another nice day today, with moderating temperatures, low cloud cover, no precipitation and low humidity. This will be
another good one to work outside.

Wow! A Picture Perfect Day!

This has been, without a doubt, a marvelous string of weather events. It has been cool, but not so cool that one could not be outdoors. The sun has been bright, but there have been enough clouds to keep from being scorched. I got this load of wood done in 4 and a half days. Now I have almost finished trimming my fence-line so I can let the critters out to have at the lower pasture without getting into what is left of the garden or out into the woods. They have been doing quite a job on the other side of the fence, but that should cease. My next task, once the fence-line is clear is to get into the garden and see what has survived the goats and the weeds. I may actually have some vegetables that can be harvested other than tomatoes and lettuce. Needless to say the National Weather Service got this one right, both in terms of the predominant weather and the cloud cover. We had minimal cirrus clouds off and on during the day.
Overnight the N.O.A.A. prediction for Wilton Maine is for no precipitation for the first half of the period followed by fog. The cloud cover is expected to be quite low (3%/2%/5%/5%), so there should be considerable radiational cooling, at least during the first half of the period. The NEXRAD radar continues to show the storms going to our south, and that is all right with me for now. The Weather Underground also indicates the storms will continue to move off south of us for at least one more day.
My Weather Stick has a slight smile, and with 71% relative humidity I am smiling too. For a change my Weather Station disagrees with my other electronic instruments calling for a mix of fair and cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure. The other two electronic instruments are calling for fair skies and rising barometric pressure. I like that, and would suggest that we will have mostly fair skies with lots of starlight and moonshine.

Anyone For Pea Soup?

If you have to be on the road early this morning, the fog is very thick, and Bullwinkle can hide very easily in the middle of the road. He tends to be a very immovable object when confronted with a car or pick-up truck. With the fog in place we have not had any frost here in Wilton, Maine. There may have been some in other areas where there are protected valleys in the highlands, but I have not had any reports of it. I am looking forward to finishing the last load of wood and moving on to other tasks..
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation, but a slight increase in the cloud cover (15%/30%/24%/15%) ending with a return to this morning's levels. The ridge of high pressure shown on the Weather Underground model forecast map is still keeping the precipitation well south of us. That is also quite apparent on the NEXRAD radar, as well as the local, Portland/Gray, radar.
My Weather Stick is frowning, and with 88% relative humidity and fog, so am I. The electronic instruments are forecasting everything but precipitation. My Weather Station says we will have fair skies with rising barometric pressure. The Min/Max Thermometer forecasts a mix of clear and cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure. Finally, the remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions with steady barometric pressure. I will go out on a limb and suggest that we are in for another delightful day. There may be some high thin clouds, but nothing that will prevent anyone from working, or playing, outside. It might be a little cool for swimming though.

There Is a Definite Taste Of Autumn In The Air!

When I started working on the wood this morning it was cool enough to put on a light sweatshirt. It only took about 10 minutes and the sweatshirt came off. I cut all the pieces to size, winding up with 54 pieces of wood to split. I reduced that number to 10 by quitting time. This was, in case you have not guessed, a perfect day to continue work outside. There were some clouds, but they did not bring us any precipitation, and there was some wind to keep me cool. I think, and it is subjective, that the cloud cover was heavier than N.O.A.A. predicted, but they did have the predominant weather correct.
For the overnight, N.O.A.A. predicts no precipitation for the first half of the night and fog for the second half. If their prediction of the temperature for Wilton, Maine is correct we do not have to worry about frost here yet. There will not be much cloud cover (0%/0%/0%/12%) to act as a blanket overnight, and keep the frost off the pumpkin, but the fog will. According to the NEXRAD radar the storms are still being kept to our south. The Weather Underground model forecast maps are showing the same thing. It appears we will have at least one more day of this kind of weather, maybe two.
My Weather Stick is expressionless in response to the 75% relative humidity. Two of the electronic instruments forecast clear skies overnight with rising barometric pressure. The remote weather station forecasts a mix of clear and cloudy skies with steady barometric pressure. My guess is that we will see the clouds dissipate and temperatures fall into the low forties or possibly the upper thirties. Any fog that rolls in after 02:00 will protect the tender vegetation, so we should be all right.

No Frost Here, But Foggy

It did not get cold enough here in Wilton, Maine to produce frost, but that would not have happened anyway, since we now have a thick ground fog. That fog began to develop at 05:00, and has gotten thicker as time marched on. N.O.A.A. predicted fog west of us, but not here, so they missed the last prediction of the predominant weather. The sky has remained clear though allowing for considerable radiational cooling, hence the temperatures around 40°F.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation, but the cloud cover is expected to increase somewhat through the day (0%/15%/29%/22%), and then fall toward the end of the day. The current Portland/Gray radar is showing a bit of ground clutter, and that only in the immediate Portland, Maine area. The Weather Underground model forecast maps show any storms moving off to our south, and Maine staying in the clear for today. I like that.
My Weather Stick is frowning, and with the fog, and 88% relative humidity I am frowning too. All three of my electronic instruments are calling for fair skies and rising barometric pressure. I like that, too. My suggestion is that we will have another very pleasant day. I do intend to finish that load of wood today, and that will be a job well finished. I have plenty of other tasks to keep me busy for the rest of this week, until the predicted rain arrives toward the end of it.

Lots of Cumulus Clouds, But No Rain Today

It was very pleasant working outside today. I split another 50 logs and cut a dozen more preparatory to splitting. I have 22 more to cut, and then split them all. If the weather holds I should finish this load tomorrow. N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct, as we had no rain. I have no accurate way to measure it, but I think there was more cloud cover than they forecast.
For the overnight the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation and decreasing cloud cover (21%/13%/4%/4%). There is quite a bit of precipitation south of New York City, but it seems to have run into a wall, and will not make it up here to Wilton, Maine. The Weather Underground model forecast maps seem to indicate the possibility of some showers tomorrow afternoon, but it may just be some cloudy conditions. Tomorrow will be here soon enough with the proof.
My Weather Stick is smiling just a little, and the cause is the 69% relative humidity. All three of the electronic instruments forecast rising barometric pressure. Two of them forecast fair skies while the remote weather station forecasts a mix of fair and cloudy conditions. It is going to get cool tonight, so you might want to close down a few of the windows, at least part way. There is some concern about frost, but I think those areas that are prone to it should take precautions. If you do not usually have an early frost I do not think you need to worry tonight. Good Luck!

The N.W.S forecast the temperature correctly for all but the 08:00 forecast point today. I guess their models are not well tuned to the reality of the relative humidity, and sometime they miss some of the temperature readings as well.

Wow! Talk About A Taste Of Autumn.

As I look out my west window at my little stand of maple trees I note that one of them is beginning to show some autumn color. I know it is only the middle of August, but the amount of light is getting low enough to cause the chlorophyll to lose its color allowing the orange and yellow to show through. I noted on Mile Hill in New Sharon, Maine that there are trees that are showing even more color. It was a nice night with no clouds and very cool temperatures that reached the low to mid-forties. The house is really getting aired out with all this crisp, cool air over Wilton, Maine.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation, but some cloud cover (47%/45%/33%/37%). That should not dampen any outdoor activities you may have planned. I plan to get some more wood cut and split. According to the weather prognosticators there is not supposed to be as much wind as there was yesterday. That may allow the temperatures to rise a bit more than they did yesterday.
My Weather Stick is frowning a little, and that may be because the relative humidity was at 80% when I took the reading. Obviously it has fallen since then. All three of my electronic instruments are forecasting rising barometric pressure. The remote weather station is forecasting partly cloudy skies while the other two are forecasting fair skies. I suspect that we shall see fair skies today with just a slight possibility of a passing cloud. I think it is going to be a great day to do anything outside.

The N.W.S forecast the temperature correctly for all four points overnight. Their inability to correctly forecast the relative humidity was again evident. Showers This Morning/Dry And Cool This Afternoon

The rain ended, according to my weather station around 06;30 this morning. It was reported that we had a bit more rain later this morning, but there was not enough to measure. I went to a meeting, so I cannot verify that observation. We have now received over two inches of rain for the month of August. Once the rain stopped the sky cleared and the relative humidity dropped to comfortable levels. That is my perception at least. I was able to get outside and split some fifty pieces of the new load of wood. I hope to get that done quickly this time.
For the overnight, the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation with a cloud cover to match (39%/49%/46%/27%). There are no showers showing up on either the NEXRAD composite regional radar or the local (Portland/Gray, Maine) radar. The Weather Underground model forecast maps show the clouds dissipating and moving out before midnight. They also show a delightful day for tomorrow.
My Weather Stick points straight out, and now we have relative humidity of 69%, and I can believe that. All three of the electronic instruments forecast fair skies and rising barometric pressure for Wilton, Maine. I think I can go along with that, and be thankful for it too.

More Showers This Morning

As I stepped outside this morning just before 05:00 to add the Ashtrol to my Outdoor Wood Boiler and take my morning readings, it just started to rain again. By the time I started this report we had another 0.02 inches of rain. That is in addition to the two inches we had during the overnight. N.O.A.A. said we would have some more light scattered showers during the last period of the overnight, and they did get this one right.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts more light scattered showers for Wilton, Maine, and they expect them to taper off by this afternoon. Their cloud cover forecast (78%/71%/63%/51%) does not appear to take us out of the possibility of scattered showers, but it does seem to lessen it. The NEXRAD regional radar shows echoes from storms in our area, and they do not seem to be moving. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that we can look for scattered showers this morning, with some possibility of clearing this afternoon.
My Weather Stick is frowning this morning again in response to the 91% relative humidity. Two of the electronic instruments forecast rain, and the remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions. All three of them are predicting that the barometric pressure will fall today. Since we have had some rain already this morning, and the sky is still cloudy, I would not be surprised to see some more rain during the morning. The weather may improve over the afternoon, but that remains to be seen.

A great Morning/Showers This Afternoon

I seriously considered going for a bicycle ride this morning, but when I looked at the 38 pieces of wood left to split from the last load and the un-numbered pieces of wood to cut and split from the new load I decided against it. I had some errands to run this morning, and right after lunch I went to work splitting the last of those pieces. That went well until 16:15 when it started to rain, but the load is done. I do not think N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct since we had a shower before 17:00 hours.
The graphical forecast from the N.W.S. at Gray, Maine left a question about the middle part of the overnight. The text forecast indicates that we will have scattered showers overnight. The NEXRAD radar and Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that showers may well be in the offing for us here in Wilton, Maine. The cloud cover forecast supports that idea (58%/78%/84%/89%).
My Weather Stick is frowning still and so am I at the 85% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments forecast rain/foul weather with falling barometric pressure. The fact that we have had a couple showers already this afternoon and evening as well as the forecasts from all the instrumentation I must agree. Showers are the order of the night, and after the front passes through a beautiful morning.

More Showers Overnight, And Now Fog!

N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct, as we had some more rain overnight. When I first checked my outdoor data the sky was partly cloudy, and the visibility was excellent. Since then there has been some fog creeping in, but that now seems to be burning off.
For today according to their graphical forecasts we can expect no precipitation through around noontime. The second half of the day is a question mark, although the text forecast is calling for a chance of showers. The cloud cover forecast would support some showers this afternoon (44%/63%/82%/74%). The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate a very slight chance of some clouds and precipitation around noon, and nothing much after that. Right now the N.W.S. radar out of Gray is showing some echoes moving east south of Portland, Maine, but nothing here in Wilton.
My Weather Stick is frowning strongly as a result of the 91% relative humidity, and it is making me frown too. My electronic instruments seem to be in total disagreement again. My Weather Station forecasts partly cloudy conditions with rising barometric pressure. My Min/Max thermometer has the situation as rain with falling barometric pressure. Finally, my remote weather station calls for clouds with steady barometric pressure. The sensors for these instruments are all within a hundred feet or so of one another. We wonder why the N.W.S. has problems predicting the weather. My guess, based on what I see, is that we will see some clouds, and due to atmospheric instability could see a shower this afternoon, but I think they will be widely scattered. We shall see.

A Nice Day, But Showers This Evening

100b4380.jpg
This Is Lucien
100b4300.jpg
This Is Bellatrix
These are the result of last evening's activity in the barn. They are both very cute, not at all like their evil namesakes from the Harry Potter series.
Now, back to the important stuff, like the weather. Sometime I think we take ourselves a bit too seriously. For today we had a good one. There were some clouds, and if I had not been at the Board of Environmental Protection public hearing on Outdoor Wood Boilers I would have finished much. I had to go, and even though I did not get to speak I did get to hear Ed Miller of the Maine Chapter of the American Lung Association tell the gathering just how much they were against the use of Outdoor Wood Boilers. That is directly opposite to the e-mail he sent me claiming they were not "against" Outdoor Wood Boilers. With his statements of today I will never ride in the Trek Across Maine again, and I will fight him just as hard as he is fighting the use of Outdoor Wood Boiler. I believe the quote is as follows "When we give up a freedom to gain security, we gain neither, and will probably lose both." Ben Franklin. Just to note we did have quite a thunderstorm around 19:00 hours, but I had the animals come in before they got too wet. The sheep were the ones I wanted to stay dry, and they got the wettest.
For the overnight the N.W.S. starts out with no precipitation, but they forecast light scattered showers for most of the period. Their prediction of the cloud cover certainly indicates that is a possibility (83%/84%/58%/42%). The NEXRAD regional radar shows some showers are still out there, and could affect us. The Weather Underground model forecast maps still indicate some possibility of showers through the overnight.
My Weather Stick is smiling and when I went out at 19:00 hours the relative humidity was 70%. It did not stay there long, but has risen quickly into the mid-eighty percent range. All three of the electronic instruments finally agree calling for foul weather with falling barometric pressure. I think we could still have some more showers, although it is just as possible that Wilton, Maine has had what they are going to get right now. We will just have to wait and see in the morning.

Ground Fog Is The Predominant Feature This Morning.

I have already been outside to the barn to check on the new arrivals and both dam and kids seem to be doing fine. Photos will be forthcoming. Overnight we did get into some fog, but there does not seem to be any overcast or cloudy conditions right now. The temperature did reach the high forties, and even with the high humidity it was a comfortable night for sleeping. It was so comfortable, in fact, that I slept right through my alarm, waking up when it was about to end its hour of music.
For today the N.W.S. predicts that we will start with no precipitation, but gradually light scattered showers will overspread the region of Wilton, Maine. The cloud cover is expected to increase (46%/52%/58%/68%) supporting the idea of the light scattered showers this afternoon. There is some precipitation showing up on the NEXRAD regional radar, and it does seem to be moving in our direction. It will take a while to get here since it is in Western New York. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that showers should break out around 18:00 hours this evening and last until sometime early tomorrow morning. That should make for an interesting report tonight and tomorrow morning.
My Weather Stick is frowning again, and at 91% relative humidity I am too :(. All three of the electronic instruments forecast rising barometric pressure. My Weather Station forecasts fair skies while the other two instruments see partly cloudy skies for today. The fog outside my window is already burning off leaving us with clear skies for the moment. I suspect that will change as the day wears on, based on what I see on the regional radar and model forecast maps.

A Bit Of Farm Life!

When I got home this evening and started my chores I noted that Jane Doe appeared to be in labor, and that was expected. She was bred on March fifteenth. Her first kid was a breach presentation, and I needed to assist her in getting it kidded. So far it appears to be doing fine, but time will tell. It was a large buck. Her second was a doe kidded just a few minutes after I delivered the buck. I suspect she has one more to kid out. We shall see in the morning.

I Got A Stork For This Assist, A New Kid
Now for the weather. This morning we had some rain, as was suggested for Wilton, Maine. It stopped around 11:15 here, and the sun came out for a while. Then we had a mixture of sunny skies and clouds, but no more rain. I was able to do my errands this morning, and split some more wood this afternoon. I only have 4 big pieces and about 20 short pieces to finish.
For the overnight the N.W.S. is starting out with light scattered showers followed by no precipitation and fog for the last half of the night. I did see some ground fog as I was on my way home around 20:30 hours. Their prediction of minimal cloud cover supports their predominant weather forecast (22%/7%/9%/18%). The NEXRAD radar shows the showers have moved away, and the Weather Underground model forecast maps also indicate that the skies should have cleared.
My Weather Stick is frowning again at the 87% relative humidity. My electronic instruments are still not in concert. My Weather Station forecast clear skies, but falling barometric pressure, and that is unusual. My Min/Max Thermometer predicts a mix of fair and cloudy skies with rising barometric pressure, and so does the remote weather station. I would have to suggest that we will see clear skies based on what I saw when I was outside for the birthing of the kids. That should result in a significant fall in temperature, so we could see the high forties or at least the low fifties. The fog may act as a little bit of a blanket though, and help keep the temperature up a bit, at least locally.

The N.W.S had the temperature correct for only the last data point at 17:00 hours today. They did not have a single relative humidity point forecast accurately. That means they got one out of the eight forecast points correct. That was very poor. Forecast data for the overnight.

The sky Is Threatening This Morning.

Overnight the temperature in Wilton, Maine dropped into the low fifties, and the clouds seem to have moved in. Right now they are only cirrus, usually not a problem, but they do seem to be thickening and lowering. The temperature would be great, but I do not ride in the rain if I can help it. This morning I hope to finish splitting the last of the wood that I have cut to length, and then, maybe, take another bicycle ride.
For today the N.W.S. forecast calls for the cloud cover to slowly dissipate (62%/61%/59%/50%), but remain fairly heavy. That would support the other part of the forecast calling for light scattered showers around our area. The Portland//Gray N.W.S. radar is showing scattered showers all over the area, and so does the NEXRAD regional radar. They do seem to be headed toward our area of the state. The Weather Underground model forecast maps are also showing inclement weather for the area, and the apparent intensity has increased since last night. I am glad they continually update their information.
With the relative humidity at 89% my Weather Stick is frowning again. My electronic instruments are once again in total disarray, and could not agree less. My Weather Station forecasts clear skies with rising barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts foul weather with falling barometric pressure. Finally, my remote weather station forecasts clouds with steady barometric pressure. I see cloudy skies outside, and with them a chance for showers and/or thundershowers. I find it difficult to get enthusiastic about working outside in the rain. I have plenty of indoor projects that require attention, so I will not be at a loss for activities while it rains.

The N.W.S had the temperature correct for all four of the forecast periods overnight. They did not forecast one point correctly for the relative humidity. I cannot even make a point that the more humid air moved in faster than they expected. Oh well, sometimes they just get it wrong.

This Was A Great Day To Be Outside!!!

There was a cool start to the day, but it was not uncomfortable. N.O.A.A. had predicted no rain for the overnight, and they were correct. I enjoyed getting my morning chores done and going for a bicycle ride late this morning. I did a 16 mile ride at 15.4 miles per hour. That is the best I have done this year. I am pleased. This afternoon I worked outside, and the wood mountain is growing, as you can see. I am almost done with the last load of wood that was delivered.

The Wood Mound Continues To Grow
For the overnight the N.W.S. is predicting no precipitation, but increasing cloud cover (31%/47%/63%/.63%). That may not bode well for tomorrow. There are no showers showing up on the Portland/Gray radar or the NEXRAD regional radar that would affect us overnight. The N.W.S. is threatening some rain or showers tomorrow afternoon. The Weather Underground model forecast maps are showing slightly less intensity in the storm system that is supposed to reach us tomorrow afternoon than they did earlier today or yesterday.
My Weather Stick points slightly up in response to the 78% relative humidity. My electronic instruments are still not in complete agreement. My Weather Station and Min/Max Thermometer are calling for rising barometric pressure, while the remote weather station sees it as remaining steady. The Weather Station is forecasting fair skies; the Min/Max Thermometer sees a mix of fair and cloudy skies, while the remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions. I could pick any of these and probably be right. I would suggest, since the sky was mostly cloudy, that we will probably see more than our fair share of clouds, with light winds and cool temperatures. Sleep well!

The N.W.S had the temperature correct for all four of the forecast periods today. They did miss the last two data points for the relative humidity today. They only missed two of the forecast point. Not too bad a result

A Sky As Clear As It Can Be!

There is no doubt that we will have a great day today. The sky is devoid of clouds, and it is as though the sun popped up over the horizon in its full brightness. The N.W.S. and I got this one right for the overnight. The only point that the N.W.S. missed was the early part of the evening when they called for light scattered showers. In this area of Wilton, Maine there were no showers, although you might have had one in your location. They were definitely a hit or miss proposition.
For today N.O.A.A. suggests that we will see no precipitation, and the cloud cover will remain low (25%/17%/30%/15%), except for the mid-afternoon when I suspect they expect some cumulonimbus clouds to boil up. It does not appear that they expect those clouds to produce any precipitation for our area.
My Weather Stick is frowning again, and with 90% relative humidity who can blame it. My electronic instruments are still confused by what they are reading. My Weather Station, with its sensors in the middle of my side yard, interprets the atmospheric conditions to produce a mix of fair and cloudy skies with rising barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer, with its sensor on the North side of the house, interprets the conditions to produce foul weather with falling barometric pressure. Finally, my remote weather station, with its sensor inside the door of my barn, sees cloudy skies with rising barometric pressure. I find it difficult to believe that these three units can see things so differently so often. Based on what I can see from my west facing windows, I would suggest that we will have a delightful day with few, if any, clouds, low humidity, light wind and moderate temperatures. On a scale from one to ten we could rate this as an eleven, but that rating will need to wait until this evening.
