The Month Ends On A Cool Note.

N.O.A.A. did have the predominant weather forecast correct for the overnight. We had no precipitation, and the cloud cover did decrease until this morning when I went outside at about 05:30. The cloud cover then was a bit more than 30%. My understanding was that the temperature was not supposed to drop below freezing until around 05:00 hours. Despite the fact that the temperature forecasts were within five degrees they were high, and the temperature was below freezing almost all night. My hose should thaw by the time I get to the chores this morning. Right now (07:15) the temperature is still at 28°F. That will teach me to drain the hose.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation, but cloud cover in the mid-thirties range (33%/34%/34%.34%). That will probably help to keep the temperature a bit lower than yesterday, since the sun will not get to the atmosphere to warm it up. The NEXRAD radar is not showing any echoes over Maine, but thee are some minor ones over western Connecticut. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that we will have a clear day today. That does not say anything about tomorrow afternoon when they forecast precipitation for our area including Wilton, Maine.
My Weather Stick is frowning again due to the 85% relative humidity. With the temperature and relative humidity where it was at 05:30 when I walked Ike I was frowning too. My electronic instruments are showing a bit of a mix. My Weather Station and Min/Max Thermometer forecast fair skies with rising barometric pressure. The remote weather station forecasts partly cloudy skies with steady barometric pressure. I think we can expect to see some clouds, and they will probably thicken and lower during the day today, but there will be no precipitation. I cannot say the same for tomorrow, but we will see what happens. Enjoy the Ghoul Weather tonight, and be careful of the ghosts and goblins as you travel about this evening. You should not have to worry about the witches since they will be aboard their brooms. Happy Witches New Year (Samhain)

If we round the 23:00 hour forecast temperature up then all four of the N.W.S. temperature forecasts were correct overnight. The only relative humidity forecast that they missed was a 02:00 hours. This was a pretty good attempt by the N.W.S. at prognostication. One has to wonder if they can do as well during the day today.

A Lot Warmer Than Yesterday, But Cool Tonight!

We had no precipitation today as N.O.A.A. suggested. There were some clouds, but much more sun, and that had a beneficial effect on the temperature sending it up to the mid-fifties this afternoon. It was quite windy this afternoon, but that wind has died down this evening.
For tonight, the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation, but some increase in the cloud cover (33%/45%/57%/54%). The NEXRAD regional radar shows no echoes, other than apparent ground clutter) over the state of Maine. The Weather Underground model forecast maps show nothing affecting us until much later in the week (maybe Thursday or Friday).
My Weather Stick is smiling, and with 74% relative humidity so am I. All three of my electronic weather instruments indicate rising barometric pressure. Two of the instruments forecast fair skies overnight, and the remote weather station forecasts a mix of fair and cloudy conditions. Based on what I saw when I was outside a while ago we have a few cirrus clouds around, but not enough to ground "Life Flight". Their path to the hospital comes close to our house. My best assessment of the weather tonight is that it will be cool, in the low thirties, with some high thin clouds, but no precipitation.

Frosty, But No Snow Here!

N.O.A.A. did suggest that there might be some light scattered snow showers over Wilton, Maine overnight. The Weather Underground model forecast maps also suggested the same thing. We did not have any in this area of Wilton. Just as with light scattered rain showers during the summer it all depends on your location what you get. When I stepped outside this morning at about 05:30 hours the sky was clear, the stars were out and the moon was shining brightly. There was some wind, but it was light, and even the frost on the vehicles did not need to be scraped from the windshield. This did not appear to be a bad night.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation with the cloud cover decreasing a bit until late this afternoon (45%/34%/23%/30%). The NEXRAD regional radar shows the last of the, now, rain showers moving out of far eastern Maine. The Weather Underground model forecast maps also indicate that there are no further showers, snow or rain, expected to impinge on our area for today.
My Weather Stick is expressionless. I would have expected it to point down a little with 80% relative humidity, but I can only report what I see. All three of my electronic instruments are forecasting falling barometric pressure. There forecasts for the type of weather though are quite different. My Weather Station forecasts unsettled weather. My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts foul weather. Finally, my remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions for today. Based on what I see I suspect that we will see any clouds that may show up, dissipate over the day, and all things considered it will be a bright day, although a bit cool.

The N,W.S. forecast the temperature within five degrees at three of the four points overnight. They did miss the 20:00 hour point. They did not do nearly as well with the relative humidity. The only forecast point they had correct was at 23:00 hours. I think the temperature forecasts were correct only because once the temperature reached 20 degrees it did not change very much. That was probably because there was some cloud cover until shortly before 05:00 hours.

The Chilly Night Followed By A Chilly Day!

N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct for today. This evening some clouds moved in and have become thicker and lower as the night has worn on. We did have a fair bit of wind during the day today, and that certainly helped to keep it cool around here. It is now just after midnight, and the temperature continues to fall despite the cloud cover.
For tonight, the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation for the first half with light scattered snow showers for the second half. Yes I said and they predict snow showers. The NEXRAD radar is showing some frozen precipitation north of Millinocket. It does not look like it is serious, but it is there. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that we may have some of the same here in Wilton, Maine between 03:00 and 06:00 hours this morning, but it should be out of here by 09:00 hours. The predicted cloud cover supports this (72%/65%/77%/61%)
My Weather Stick is smiling just a little, probably because I am foolishly still up at "0" dark thirty. It might also be because the relative humidity is at68%. My electronic instruments are all over the place. The Weather Station says partly cloudy with falling barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer says foul weather with falling barometric pressure. Finally, the remote weather station says partly cloudy with falling barometric pressure. I think we may see some snow flurries with temperatures in the low to mid-twenties. It was nice while it lasted, but I think the warm weather is about done. By the way, the temperature now is the same as it was this morning when I did my morning report.

A Chilly Night.

With the clear sky it did not take long for the temperature to dip below freezing. If you had any tender vegetation outside it is not any more, because it is now frozen in all probability. It was a beautiful clear night. Just the kind of night when staying inside is just the order of the day. We all know what we can expect next. Halloween, of course. N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather as well as the temperature and humidity mostly correct overnight. Even the cloud cover appears to have been right.
Today the N.W.S. forecasts overcast developing (1%/22%/42%57%), but no precipitation. There are no echoes on the NEXRAD regional radar, and the Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate no storms until late tonight, and then only light scattered precipitation. I will not talk about what kind of precipitation, but with the temperatures, let your imagination run wild.
My Weather Stick is smiling just a little. I wonder if it knows what the Red Sox did last night? My electronic instruments do not appear to agree at all. My Weather Station forecasts fair skies with rising barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts unsettled conditions with falling barometric pressure. My remote weather station forecasts unsettled conditions with rising barometric pressure. I think we will see a partly cloudy day with some cooler than normal temperatures, and some clouds moving through the skies of Wilton, Maine. I hate to suggest that overnight tonight we may see some snow, but it will be light and very scattered.

Another Great Autumn Day!!

As I suggested we had cumulus clouds blowing through all day on a cool Canadian wind. That wind tended to be out of the West to North at upward of 12 mph, but an average of around 7 mph. There was plenty of sun, but the temperature only managed a little over 49 degrees. Still it was a pretty day with no black flies to bother us outside.
For the overnight N.O.A.A. forecasts no precipitation with a decreasing cloud cover (32%/9%/8%/0%). There is nothing in the area of Wilton, Maine on the NEXRAD regional radar. The Weather Underground model forecast maps also show no foul weather in our immediate vicinity.
My Weather Stick is smiling a little in response to the 59% relative humidity. With that level I would expect a smile like the Red sox Nation after tonight's win over the Rockies. Yes, they did it. My Weather Station is forecasting fair weather with rising barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts partly cloudy or unsettled conditions with falling barometric pressure. My remote weather station sees unsettled conditions with rising barometric pressure. I think the sky will clear (it is pretty clear now at 00:52 hours). The temperature will fall below freezing and the wind will remain active. It still should be a good night. This is the first time since April that I have had to disconnect and drain my hose to keep it from freezing. Winter is coming for sure.

Cumulus Clouds Are Moving Through Rapidly!

We had one more burst of rain this morning leaving us with a total of 0.97 inches out of this storm system. Right now as noted above we are having large, puffy cumulus clouds moving through Wilton, Maine on the breath of a freshet from Canada. The sun is shining, the temperature has changed very little, and the wind is very active ranging as high as 14.3 mph. N.O.A.A. did get the predominant weather incorrect since we had that light scattered shower shortly after 05:00 hours when we were supposed to have no precipitation. Sorry, guys.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation and static cloud cover (39%/43%/57%/43%). There are no echoes showing up on the NEXRAD regional radar. The Weather Underground model forecast maps show the storm pulling away from us today, and fair weather becoming the predominant feature there.
My Weather Stick is smiling just a little due to the 61% relative humidity. I think it should be smiling more, but when I first went out it was frowning a little. I think it is just taking a little time to catch up with the relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments forecast rising barometric pressure, and indeed it has gone up overnight. Two of them call for fair skies. The remote weather station is calling for a mix of sun and clouds. I think that may be the closest to the truth, and we will see clouds moving through all day. It may clear late this afternoon, but I would not bet on it. Speaking of betting, how about those Red Sox?

It Did Rain All Day And Into The Night.

N.O.A.A. did have the predominant forecast correct for today, it rained and we acquired almost an inch between last night and today. I cannot say much more than clouds and rain for today.
For the overnight the N.W.S. says we sill star with rain, decreasing to light scattered showers and ending the last half of the overnight with no precipitation. They also claim that the cloud cover will decrease from 100% to 79% to 57% and end at 52%. That seems to be reasonable. The NEXRAD regional radar shows most of the showers are gone. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that the storm will be gone by no later than 06:00 tomorrow morning.
My Weather Stick is frowning again, and with 91% relative humidity I agree. My Weather station forecasts falling barometric pressure with rain. My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts mixed conditions with rising barometric pressure. Finally the remote weather station forecasts rain with falling barometric pressure. I see that the clouds have broken, the moon is shining brightly and the rain has stopped. The skies are clearing but the barometer has not yet risen above this morning's level. I think the storm is already over, and we will see a fine day tomorrow.

The Clouds Are Now Producing Sky Juice!

Around 03:10 this morning the rain started, and has continued all morning, so far. The entire forecast area covered by the N.O.A.A. forecast map is currently receiving rain at some level. The leaves are now off most of the trees (except the oaks which hold onto them until spring).
For today, at least through the noon hour, the N.W.S. forecasts rain, and after that the predominant weather is unknown. Temperatures are supposed to remain in the low to mid-fifties, and the cloud cover will remain close to 100% (100%/100%/100%/97%). The NEXRAD radar indicates that the rain is widespread over the forecast area. The Weather Underground model forecast maps still show significant rain for this area of Wilton, Maine for today, and into tomorrow.
My Weather Stick is frowning, and with 89% humidity and rain who can really blame it? My Weather Station is forecasting a storm warning with falling barometric pressure. My Min/Max thermometer forecasts rain with falling barometric pressure. Finally my remote weather station forecasts clouds with falling barometric pressure. I guess we cannot have rain without clouds. My prediction is for rain today, with overcast skies and cool temperatures.

The Clouds Are Slowly Working Their Way In!

Today N.O.A.A. suggested that we would have no precipitation, and we did not. They also predicted that the cloud cover would increase, and it has. The temperature did make it just a little over sixty here in Wilton, Maine, making it a delightful day to be out and about.
For the overnight, the N.W.S. had a more interesting forecast. They way we will start with no precipitation, which will give way to light scattered showers for the middle of the period and end with rain around 05:00 hours. The cloud cover forecast definitely supports that set of predictions (17%/60%/100%/100%). The NEXRAD composite radar shows a wide swath of rain headed our way, but it does not appear to be very heavy. The Weather Underground model forecast maps seem to indicate some significant, heavy rain overnight, and even into Sunday morning. They see to think we will have a bit of a wild ride. We are already having more wind than we did with the storm at mid-week.
My Weather Stick is again expressionless, although I would have expected a much sadder expression with the humidity where it is at 81%. Maybe it is trying to tell us that the weather will be unsettled. All three of my electronic instruments forecast falling barometric pressure. There is now agreement, however, among them regarding the weather. The Weather Station forecasts partly cloudy conditions. The Min/Max Thermometer forecasts foul weather. The remote weather station forecasts fair skies. I think we will see some rain before the night is over, and more to come tomorrow, and at least into tomorrow night and maybe Sunday morning. How is that for going out on a limb?

The N,W.S. correctly forecast the temperature for today. The way they started out with the relative humidity I actually had hope that they might get them right too. Vain hope, because they only had the 08:00 hour forecast point correct. It was just too much to expect them to get all four forecast points for both parameters correct twice in a row. I do not think that has ever happened.

The Fog Inhibits Visibility This Morning!

As you head off to work early this morning take care, because the fog around Wilton, Maine is very dense. Last night, on the way back from Solon we saw a doe making her way across the road. Thankfully we saw her in time to avoid an accident. I do not mind seeing a deer shot, because it will be used to feed people, but so much is lost when they are hit by a vehicle that it is a waste of a resource. That is my opinion. With the temperature in the upper twenties plus the fog there could be some slippery pavement out there. The sky is clear above the fog, so once it burns off we should have a pretty day. I should mention that it appears that N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather forecast correctly since we now have fog and very low cloud cover above the fog. A very good job for a change.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation with some increase in the cloud cover toward the end of the day (0%/3%/6%/23%). The NEXRAD regional composite radar is not showing any precipitation in its view. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate no precipitation for today as well. It does appear that overnight there will be a storm moving in, and that may well last into the middle of Sunday morning. So much for the first day of hunting season. The deer will be holed up in the thickets, and I will stay warm and dry in my house as well.
My Weather Stick is frowning again as a result of the 87% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments forecast fair skies with rising barometric pressure for today. When they all agree like this there is no sense for me to disagree with them. I think, as I stated earlier, that once the fog burns off we will have a very pleasant day, although a bit cooler than it has been.

Another Change In The Atmosphere

Now Our Friend The Maple Is Naked As A Jay Bird
I have been following the tree above all season long, and now there is no longer a need to do so. It is now prepared for winter, so bring it on.
N.O.A.A. correctly forecast the predominant weather (we had no precipitation) for Wilton, Maine. The sun was out most of the day and the temperatures were quite pleasant in the low sixties. I was able to get a few things done before I went to a meeting in Solon. That was pleasant too.
For the overnight, the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation for the first half of the period and possibly fog for the second. The cloud cover is forecast to be very low (1%/6%/10%/15%) and that would support the predominant weather forecast. There are no real echoes on the NEXRAD regional radar. The Weather Underground model forecast maps snow no storms overnight tonight, but Saturday does not look like it is going to be a day for getting outside to hunt or work on the woodpile.
My Weather Stick is neither smiling nor frowning, I guess it is expressionless. The relative humidity is 82% which is a little higher than I would have expected for it to be straight. All three of my electronic instruments forecast fair skies and rising barometric pressure. The pressure has already risen significantly, and I am not sure how much higher it can go. The character of the air has changed to a much more seasonable style. I guess it is about time.

Overcast This Morning.

The frontal system is still affecting our area. The rain is hugging the coast, although we have had no precipitation here in Wilton, Maine. With the cloud cover overnight the temperature did not get close to the low thirties that were predicted. There was little or no wind overnight either.
For today N.O.A.A. forecasts no precipitation, and the cloud cover forecast (47%/35%/23%/17%) suggests that to be the case. The NEXRAD regional radar shows the frontal boundary quite clearly, with the rain moving along it. It seems to be just off the coast, and is keeping the rain out of our area. The Weather Underground model forecast maps also indicate that the front will remain offshore and slowly move away taking the rain with it. This should give us nice weather later today and tomorrow. They also show another set of storms moving in Saturday evening, lasting until late Sunday morning.
My Weather Stick is frowning just a little at the 83% relative humidity. All of my electronic instruments indicate rising barometric pressure. Two of them forecast fair skies today based on the amount the barometric pressure has already risen. The remote weather station forecasts mixed or partly cloudy conditions. I suspect that the clouds will slowly move out of the area leaving us with a very nice afternoon and evening. It will remain seasonably cool for today, and it may get quite cold overnight.

A Little Sun This Morning, Then Clouds.

N.O.A.A. suggested that we would have light scattered showers all day. Here in Wilton, Maine we did not have any rain at all. There was a brief period of sunshine this morning, but clouds have been the predominant feature for the rest of the day. So, while they had the predominant weather incorrect they did have the cloud cover fairly close.
For the overnight there is fog forecast early, then a period of clear weather, and then finishing out the overnight with more fog. The NEXRAD regional radar does show showers moving along the front as was suggested this morning. The forecast of cloud cover (58%/53%/63%/55%) that may protect us from frost this evening, but that remains to be seen. Those showers are not affecting us, but are staying on the coast or just off shower. The Weather Underground model forecast maps show the same situation at that site.
My Weather Stick is smiling just a little as a result of the 73% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments forecast rising barometric pressure. Two of them forecast fair weather, while the remote weather station forecasts partly cloudy or unsettled conditions. As I see the weather outside there are plenty of clouds, and they are blotting out the moon, so they may provide a blanket over us for this evening. I will suggest that we will not have any rain, but cloudy skies will predominate.

Our Wild Ride Turned Out To Be A Walk In The Park!

Despite all the prognostications of some wild weather with wind and rain, here in Wilton, Maine we had only four hundredths of an inch of rain and wind only in the range of 15 mph early yesterday evening. There is some very light rain falling now, but I am not sure if it will be enough to measure in the rain gauge. The sky is still overcast so there is a possibility of some more showers before the system moves on.
For today, the N.W.S. forecasts light scattered showers for the area, and the cloud cover forecast would support that (61%/69%/76%/72%). The NEXRAD regional radar still shows some significant rain south of us. That precipitation appears to be drying up as it reaches New Hampshire and Maine. The Weather Underground model forecast maps show the front moving off shore with the precipitation running along it. There are some showers that appear to hug the coastline, but very little, if any, in our area. Of course, Mother Nature can always have the last word, and she usually does.
My Weather Stick is frowning just a little at the 78% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments forecast rising barometric pressure today. Two of them are calling for fair skies today, while the remote weather station sees clouds in our future. I would like to believe the fair skies forecast, but I think that clouds will be the predominant feature of our weather today. I just do not see them moving off as quickly as the forecasters suggest.

It Has Been Cloudy And Threatening All Day.

If you cannot stand XXX photographs do not look.
000b1290.jpg
She Is Stripping Off Her Fall Finery
By tomorrow morning this Maple will be as naked as a Jay Bird.
Most of the forecasts that I heard and red (other than N.O.A.A. which I could not retrieve) called for copious quantities of rain. Well, once again Mother Nature had the last word. We did have a couple of light sprinkles, but not enough to measure in the electronic rain gauge. It has been cloudy all day, with the exception of one peek of sun around 16:00 hours.
For the overnight, the N.W.S. forecasts rain for half the night and light rain for the rest of it. The echoes on the NEXRAD regional radar do not look as intimidating as they did earlier today. Some of them appear to have decreased in intensity. The Weather Underground model forecast maps also seem to have changed. The front appears to have slowed or stalled, and they are now calling for the rain to end by about 06:00 tomorrow morning. They also forecast significant cloud cover through the night with some decrease near dawn (98%//6%/93%/66%). So much for the big blow that was forecast.
My Weather Stick is smiling slightly due, this time, to the 67% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments forecast foul weather overnight with falling barometric pressure. The wind has picked up, and the clouds appear to be moving rapidly through the area. While I was out a few minutes ago there was some very light rain, or rather a few drops hit me while I was outside. I guess that we will still get some rain, but at this point the amount may not be as great as they forecast earlier today. (Those forecasts talked in terms of an inch or more.)

Looks Like We Are In For A Blow!

Right now (06:30 hours) it is as dark as the inside of a pocket outside. Yesterday I took the photo of the pink clouds to the west at this time. The clouds have thickened and lowered overnight. Looking toward the west, if it were light enough, I would expect to see a rain shield, but it is not light enough. Vehicles moving along route 133 still have their headlights on. N.O.A.A. does not seem to have gotten the predominant weather correct. We did not have any precipitation overnight, but we did not have the predicted fog for the second half of the period. They did predict the continued increase in the cloud cover overnight.
For today there seems to be a problem with the graphical forecast report from the N.W.S. According to the graphics we will have no precipitation early and light rain for the middle of the day. Nothing shows on the graphic for the period from 14:00 hours to 20:00 hours. The NEXRAD regional radar does say otherwise. It shows a substantial amount of precipitation moving in our direction up the coast. The Weather Underground model forecast map has been tracking this storm for several days, and it is now saying that we can expect to see some significant rain between now and the time it ends sometime tomorrow morning.
My Weather Stick currently is straight, and I suspect that is due to some rapid changes in the relative humidity. I just checked, and my suspicion is incorrect. I cannot find a reason for it to be straight out, other than the fact that we are in for some unsettled weather. My electronic instruments all say we are in for some foul weather with falling barometric pressure. The red sky that you see below is the harbinger of some foul weather as well.

A Fine Day Despite The Clouds Moving In!

We started out with a few clouds to the west at sunrise, and tonight there is a much more general overcast. It is mostly cloudy, and still possible to see the moon through the clouds. It is dry too without any wind. During the day today the temperature in Wilton, Maine reached into the middle eighties, and that is incredible for the third week in October. I think we just need to accept it and be thankful we are not required to get our snow blowers out to move the precipitation around. That will be here soon enough.
For the overnight the N.W.S. forecast no precipitation for the first half and fog for the second half. The NEXRAD radar shows some moderate to heavy rain to our south and west that appears to be moving in our direction. That is the same storm system the Weather Underground model forecast maps have been tracking for the last four days.
My Weather Stick is smiling tonight, and with only 69% relative humidity so am I. My electronic instruments are at this moment confused. My weather Station forecasts fair skies and rising barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts falling barometric pressure with partly cloudy skies. My remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions with falling barometric pressure. At least that last is not saying steady pressure. I think the weather will deteriorate overnight, and we will have another wild ride tomorrow afternoon and evening.

Looking West I See Pink Clouds.

There are some cirrus clouds to our west, and the sun right now (06:54) has turned them a delightful shade of pink.
000b1110.jpg
The Clouds At Sunrise, Looking West
N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct for the overnight, and the cloud cover does seem to be about right as well. There has been no precipitation, and the winds appear to have remained calm as well for most of the period. The amazing thing that is to be noted right now is the temperature. These temperatures are unheard of this late in October. We should remember though that things have a way of averaging out, and if it is this warm now, how cold will be later in the winter season? I hesitate to think about that, because we will pay for this warm weather sooner or later.
For today the N.W.S. is once again forecasting no precipitation, very warm temperatures and low cloud cover (11%/9%/13%/11%). There appear to be some light showers around New York City, but they do not seem to be moving in our direction, and they seem to be dissipating. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate another day of fair weather for us here in Wilton, Maine. Tomorrow though may be a very different story. Those same maps are indicating some serious storms that may last into Wednesday morning. Once again, at least we do not have to shovel these storms.
My Weather Stick is neither frowning nor smiling as a result of the 80% relative humidity. I would have expected more of a frown, but it appears to be catching up since earlier this morning the relative humidity was around 67%. There is a lag time between the response of the stick and the relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments indicate the barometric pressure will continue to rise. Two of them forecast fair skies for today, while my remote weather station forecasts a mix of sun and clouds today. My sense is that we will have another nice day with warm temperatures, light winds and clear skies. This should be a great day to get outside and clean up the leaves or work on wood piles for the winter. I think we will need the wood cut split and ready, once winter actually arrives.

The N,W.S. forecast the temperature correctly for all four of the forecast points overnight. They missed all four of the forecast
points for the relative humidity. How they can get the forecast right for the temperature and miss the relative humidity by such a
wide margin is beyond me. I still feel we are paying, with our tax dollars, for a service we are not getting full value for. If anyone
has an explanation I would be happy to hear it. With all the personal weather stations that upload to the National Weather Service I
would think they could do better than they are.

Another Picuture Perfect Day!

Can you believe the temperatures we have been having? It was into the middle seventies this afternoon. This was a great day to split a little wood and then go for a walk in the woods this afternoon. My son-in-law and I (he is the better observer) saw deer tracks and moose tracks in the stand of woods near my home. An absolutely incredible day. N.O.A.A. and I definitely got this one right.
For the overnight, the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation with low cloud cover (6%3%0&17%). There is no activity on the NEXRAD regional radar anywhere. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate no threat of precipitation until sometime Wednesday. We have had a gorgeous stretch of Weather since it stopped ;raining on Friday. We do need the rain to bring the water table up before Winter sets in. Since it is difficult for water to reach the water table through frozen ground we do need the rain now. Sleet and snow do not get there directly anyway, and any water from those sources needs to wait for spring and warmer weather.
My weather stick is very happy, and with the low humidity so am I. The two of us are smiling like a couple of idiots. All three of my electronic weather instruments forecast rising barometric pressure, and in fact there has been an increase in that parameter. Two of the instruments forecast fair weather, while the remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions. I think we will have another delightful night. It will not get very cold, there will be no precipitation, and the winds will be gentle.

A Fine, Clear Day Coming Up!

Good Morning, and it is. It is Sunday, and the Sun is starting the day bright and the sky is clear. The temperature overnight did not seem to reach the Dewpoint. Last night, when I took Ike out for his last exercise, there was some dew on the grass, but this morning the grass was dry. I think the wind, as well as the lower relative humidity had a hand in that. N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather wrong for the first half of the overnight since there were no apparent showers around wither visibly or on the NEXRAD radar. We even had our low temperature before 23:00 last night.
For today, the N.W.S. is forecasting no precipitation, and the cloud cover continuing to decrease (16%/12%/8%/4%). The NEXRAD regional radar currently shows no echoes of note anywhere in the region. There might have been a couple over the crown of Maine, but they were very small and isolated. The only ones that would have noticed would have bee the deer, moose and birds. The Weather Underground model forecast maps continue to indicate clear skies over us for today.
My Weather Stick is smiling a little, and with 62% relative humidity I am smiling too. All three of my electronic weather instruments currently forecast rising barometric pressure. Two of them forecast clear skies. The remote weather station either has not gotten the word, or, because the sensor is in the barn, forecasts cloudy skies. I suspect the latter. As I have been writing this report I have watched the clouds dry up in the western sky. I will suggest that the clouds will continue to dissipate, and we will have a delightful day to do anything outside, particularly since we will not be bothered by black flies or mosquitoes. Have a nice day!

A Fine Day Once The Rain Stopped.

Early this morning, after I did my morning report, the raid did stop. The sun came out and the line of storms moved off to the east. I probably should have photographed the storm leaving, but I did not. Once the sun made its appearance the temperature warmed up quickly. It did turn out to be a beautiful day. The N.O.A.A., call was for light scattered showers all day. The only time we had them here was during the 08:00 to 11:00 hour period. I would, therefore, call N.O.A.A. wrong on their predominant weather forecast and cloud cover forecast.
For today the N.W.S. forecast light scattered showers for the first half of the day with those tapering to no precipitation for the second hall. That latter part was right, but the former was not. The NEXRAD regional radar shows all the storm echoes are gone from the area. Even the Weather Underground model forecast maps are showing that we are into much clearer air for this evening and tomorrow. We can stand that.
My Weather Stick is still frowning due to the 85% relative humidity this evening. All of the electronic instruments currently forecast rising barometric pressure, but that is as far as the agreement goes. My Weather Station forecasts partly cloudy skies, while the Min/Max thermometer sees fair skies. The remote weather station now can see only clouds for the overnight. My best guess is that we will see partly cloudy skies, warmer than usual temperatures and light winds. This should be a nice night.

Once It Starts To Rain, Does It Know When To Stop?

Our low temperature occurred at 20:00 hours last evening. We have had foul weather, essentially, since yesterday morning. The sky currently (06:50 hours) seems to be brightening, but it may just be looking for another place to rain. It does seem that N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct, and we now have had an additional 0.33 inches of rain. The sky is still overcast, but it does not seem to be raining as hard as it was earlier. (I do not see the rain pouring off the roof now,)
For today, the N.W.S. forecasts light scattered showers all day with cloud cover to match (100%/85%/80%/79%). The NEXRAD regional radar indicates that the bulk of the rain is beginning to move off to our east. Even the Weather Underground model forecast maps show the bulk of the storm gone by noon, light scattered precipitation for the afternoon and clear skies for tomorrow. At least that is the way I read them.
My Weather Stick continues to show its dependence on the relative humidity by frowning deeply at 91% relative humidity. All three of my electronic weather instruments are calling for rain with falling barometric pressure. I am not sure if we have reached the lowest point in this system, but the pressure on my Weather Station console is now up 0.03 in. Hg from its initial reading this morning. I think the foul weather is about over for this system, and we can expect to see some slight clearing of the sky as the clouds move off to our east. This will not be a pretty day, but it will be better than yesterday.

The N,W.S. forecast the temperature correctly for the 23:00 hour and 05:00 hour forecast points overnight. The only relative humidity point they had correct was at 20:00 hours. I understand that it is more difficult to forecast these parameters during the spring and fall, when they change as quickly and as drastically as they do, but this is ridiculous.

A Foggy Day In Wilton Town

000b1050.jpg
This May Be The Last Time We See This Maple In Her Yellow Coat This Year
As you cab see above we are having a cloudy, dank and dismal day in the photo above. That Maple tree is now just about all yellow. With the weather we are having, and are projected to have, the next photo you see of that tree will probably be XXX rated because it will be nude. This is basically what N.O.A.A. forecast for us. We had drizzle and a light rain early this morning. It stopped over the noon hour, and I had time enough to split the last of the 29 pieces of wood from my load of 2 weeks ago. Just as I finished the splitting the rain came in heavier, and you will note that we have had some additional precipitation added to the monthly total. It is now at 1.89 inches. We have had 100% stratus cloud cover all day combined with fog, drizzle and rain.
For the overnight, the N.W.S. predicts rain. The cloud cover is supposed to remain at 100% until 05:00 at which point it will fall to 99%, How does one differentiate between 100% and 99%? The NEXRAD regional radar shows a significant amount of shower activity moving toward us from the southwest to the northeast. The Weather Underground model forecast maps still call for significant rain overnight and well into tomorrow morning.
My Weather Stick is frowning, and if it was a person the corners of its mouth would be at the margins of the jaw line. That is a serious frown. With 91% relative humidity I am frowning too. All my surgical scars and injuries are telling me that this is going to be one rough ride on the weather rollercoaster. All three of my electronic instruments agree that we are having rain and will have rain tonight along with falling barometric pressure. Actually the Weather Station is now calling for a storm warning, and I believe that too. Guess what? I am not going to disagree. I think that we will have some interesting weather overnight with wind, rain and very low pressure. It will not freeze though, so we will not have to shovel it. There is a bright side to everything.

The N,W.S. forecast the temperature correctly for only the 08:00 hour forecast point today. With the overcast rain and drizzle the temperature did not rise as quickly as they though it might. Further the relative humidity did not fall as they though it might, so they missed all the relative humidity forecast points.

Another Gray Morning.

At 05:30, when I took Ike out for his morning exercise, I found the sky overcast, no wind, the temperature warm and no precipitation. We had our low temperature of 48.2°F at about 22:30. It looks like N.O.A.A. got the predominant weather overnight totally wrong. There was no precipitation let alone steady precipitation. Until this morning it appears that the cloud cover was significantly less than they predicted as well.
For today in Wilton, Maine we can expect to start with rain, which will stop for a time, to be replaced by light scattered showers for the afternoon. West of us (say Rumford) the N.W.S. is calling for steadier rain, except from 11:00 to 14:00 hours. The estimate of the cloud cover is 100% all day. West of us, in New York, and Long Island Sound the NEXRAD regional radar is showing some significant rain moving generally in our direction. The Weather Underground model forecast maps are still calling for some significant storms in Maine for today and into tomorrow.
My Weather Stick is frowning still due to the 85% relative humidity. There is some agreement among my electronic weather instruments. All three of them forecast falling barometric pressure, and indeed it has fallen overnight. My Weather Station and Min/Max Thermometer forecast partly cloudy skies. My remote weather station sees cloudy skies. As I Look out my west facing window the clouds have certainly thickened and lowered. To me that indicates an improved chance for some precipitation. The Maple that I have been watching this season is now all yellow. If we get the kind of stormy weather that the instruments, N.W.S. and prognosticators say we will it may well be stripped of its leaves by tomorrow. Basically I think we are in for a fairly rough ride today with some stormy weather and significant rainfall.

Clouds And Clear, Clouds And Clear.

We started out this morning with partly cloudy skies, the stratus clouds moved in, around mid-afternoon we went to altostratus clouds, and by sunset we had cirrus clouds and mostly cloudy skies. Now (22:00 hours) we have partly cloudy skies with a few cumulus clouds moving through. N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct, but I think Mother Nature fooled them on the cloud cover forecast.
For the overnight the N.W.S. forecasts rain, not showers, but rain for all four forecast points. So far I have not seen any rain at all. In fact, I checked the NEXRAD radar, and there are no showers headed our way, let alone rain. The forecast cloud cover would support rain (67%/76%/97%/100%), but I am not seeing that much cloud cover. The Weather Underground model forecast maps still call for a chance of showers this evening, and more significant rain tomorrow into Saturday. I do not know, and with the way things are changing, everyone is having a problem prognosticating right now.
My Weather Stick is frowning just a little due to the 81% relative humidity. There is some agreement among the electronic instruments. They are all calling for falling barometric pressure now. The Weather Station and Min/Max Thermometer forecast partly cloudy conditions. The remote weather station sees the conditions as cloudy. I do not have enough experience, but I think we will see partly cloudy skies, and the chance for some unsettled weather. That is my prediction and I am sticking to it.

The N,W.S. forecast the temperature correctly for all four forecast points today. They were on and off and on and off the relative humidity for 8:00/11:00/14:00/and 17:00 hours. Maybe they will do better tomorrow. I must say they have been doing well with the temperature forecasts.

A Very Pleasant Morning In Store.

When I stepped outside to check the conditions this morning at 05:30 there were just a few cumulus clouds evident in the sky. I could still see plenty of stars. Now (07:15) those clouds have been replaced by a sheet of stratus clouds. It is beginning to look a bit dismal out there. We did not have any precipitation here, in Wilton, Maine during the overnight, but there is plenty of humidity in the air. Despite the gray skies, the autumn colors seem to be getting brighter. We have not lost many of the leaves yet either, so I would guess that those colors are at their peak. Now would be the time to get out and observe them.
N.O.A.A. is forecasting no precipitation for our area today, in fact for the whole region that Gray covers. The cloud cover is supposed to increase as the day goes on (73%/80%/86%/93%). With the sky currently overcast (100% as I see it) I am not sure how to explain their measurement. The NEXRAD radar shows some echoes in southern New Hampshire, and they appear to be headed for the southernmost part of Maine. We do not seem to have anything moving in our direction. According to the Weather Underground model forecast maps we may get some light showers later this afternoon. Starting around noon tomorrow they see a generous amount of rainfall and stormy weather headed our way and lasting well into Saturday.
My Weather Stick is back to frowning again. With 87% relative humidity I am not surprised. My electronic instruments are showing the same forecasts as they did last night. My Weather Station sees fair skies with rising barometric pressure (wrong). My Min/Max Thermometer forecasts partly cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure (maybe). My remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions with falling barometric pressure (probably). I would suggest that we will see cloudy conditions all day with a chance of light scattered showers

The N,W.S. forecast the temperature correctly for the last three forecast points overnight. They did miss the 20:00 hour point by more than the +/- 5°F that I use as the benchmark for accuracy. The only relative humidity point that they forecast correctly was at 02:00 this morning. They only had 50% of their temperature and humidity forecasts correct within limits. That is not what I would consider good value for our tax dollars. I wonder if they can do better today?

Not Bad For The First Day Of Indian Summer!

With all the weeds in my garden I am not sure that everything has been killed. I need to go take a close look to see if there is anything I can salvage. I am not even sure that my potatoes have been top killed. Today, though, was a beautiful day, and instead of working at my computer I should have been outside working on my wood. Since I have probably enough for this winter and into next, I am not keeping the frenetic pace I was. Still, a nice day is a good day to be outside, and this was a nice day. I guess N.O.A.A. and I got one right.
For the overnight, the early prediction is for light scattered showers. We are right on the line of that prediction from the N.W.S. I do not see any real echoes on the NEXRAD radar, and the Weather Underground model forecast maps do not show any potential precipitation until tomorrow morning. The cloud cover forecast does not really support the possibility of rain for our area of Wilton, Maine (43%/55%/68%/67%).
My Weather Stick is frowning about as much this evening as it was smiling this morning, and with 81% relative humidity that is no surprise. There is virtually no agreement among my electronic instruments. My Weather Station forecasts fair skies with rising barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer calls for partly cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure. Finally my remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions with falling barometric pressure. I tend to agree with that last. It is already overcast here, and I suspect the relative humidity is on the way up. Further, the barometric pressure has already fallen. I do not think we will have any precipitation overnight, but it will be warmer than it has been for the last couple of nights.

Jack Frost Has Tiptoed Around Overnight!

As I came upstairs to start this report I noted that there was a very brief interlude of fog. It did not help since the temperature went to 28.9°F after the fog cleared. Summer is now officially over here. We can look forward now to Indian Summer, which is the first warm spell after the first killing frost. It can last for a day or up to a week. Whatever it does it is here. N.O.A.A. had the predominant weather correct, no precipitation and the chance for some fog. The sky overnight was cloudless, but now on the western horizon there are a few cirrus clouds. Ike did not want to stay outside this morning when I took him for his walk. Right now he is curled up at my feet, warming them very nicely.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation with partly cloudy skies (26%/15%/38%/43%). There are some showers in central New York state, according to the NEXRAD composite radar, but I do not think they will make it here based on what is shown on the Weather Underground model forecast maps.
My Weather Stick is frowning again due to the 87% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments forecast rising barometric pressure. Two of them are calling for fair skies, while the remote weather station says partly cloudy skies will be the order of the day. I think we will see a few clouds passing through today, but the temperature will warm up into the sixties. There will not be a lot of wind because the high pressure system will be directly overhead. This will probably start to move off by evening.

That Sucking Sound Is Summer Leaving!

000_1013.jpg
This Is The Maple Referred To This Morning
We actually had a delightful day, just as N.O.A.A. and I said we would. The temperature actually made it to 60°F. However; the temperature now (22:30 hours) is already down to 36.5°F. If nothing changes in the atmosphere you will hear the crunch of frost underfoot tomorrow morning, and the growing season will be at an end. Because of the angle of the sun I had to take the picture of that maple tree from the other side, but I think you can see how the yellow has taken over.
Someone brought it to my attention that there are a couple things I have not explained recently. If you have already seen this ignore it, since it is for the benefit of newer readers of this report. The strings of temperatures and relative humiditys that show up in the report are from the times the N.W.S. selects as their forecast points During Eastern Daylight Saving Time the daytime forecast points are 08:00/11:00/14:00 and 17:00 hours, and the nighttime forecast points are 20:00/23:00/02:00 and 05:00 hours. When we revert to Standard Time those times will back up one hour. The other explanatory point is that I use N.O.A.A. (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and N.W.S. (National Weather Service) interchangeably because they are part of the same agency.
Now, on to tonight's forecast. The N.W.S. thinks we will have frost starting around 02:00 hours when the temperature reaches (according to them) 32°F. It is expected to fall from there. Their forecast for the cloud cover is 0%/0%/0%/0%, and that will allow for significant radiational cooling. There is a possibility that we may have some fog at about the same time the temperature is supposed to reach 32°F. If that happens we will dodge another bullet, and if not we will get it right between the tomatoes. There is plenty of ground clutter showing up on the NEXRAD radar, but no showers. The wind has gone calm as well. All these parameters lead me to believe that the time for a killing or black frost is upon us. We will see!
My Weather Stick is smiling, but only very slightly with the 75% relative humidity. All three of the electronic instruments indicate that the barometric pressure is on the rise. Two of them forecast clear skies, while the remote weather station forecasts a mix of clear and cloudy skies (would you believe partly cloudy skies). I think it is going to be cold tonight, and that the time for frost on the pumpkin has arrived. So, get the squash in, let the frost get on the pumpkin and watch for the winter warnings to race across the sky. We may get some more warm weather later in the week, but I think that summer is at an end as of tonight.

That Maple Tree Is Becoming More And More Yellow.

I know it is almost unbelievable, but N.O.A.A. only missed the cloud cover for this morning at 05:00 hours. When I stepped out to check the conditions the sky was clear rather than a 60+ percent cloud cover. Right now I see one cloud to our west, and that certainly does not cover 60% of the sky. Once again we can hear those frosty bullets whizzing by our ears as we dodge another frosty morning. I have heard a weather prognosticator say that if we do not have a frost tonight we may well be frost free for another week. That is incredible.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation (there may be some light scattered mixed precipitation a little north of us late this afternoon) for Wilton, Maine and the cloud cover forecast (35%/21%/37%/21%) seems to support that. There is no activity on the NEXRAD regional radar. The Weather Underground model forecast maps show the skies as clear during the day, not only today, but also tomorrow. Even Thursday looks very clear on those maps.
My Weather Stick is still expressionless due to the 74% relative humidity. All three of my electronic instruments forecast rising barometric pressure. The only one that is not forecasting fair skies is the remote weather station, and it is forecasting cloudy conditions. My feeling is that we are going to have another delightful day with temperatures at or just below sixty degrees, light winds and a few clouds.

It Was A Cool One Mr. Grinch!

The temperature barely made it into the low fifties today, and the cumulus clouds did move in this afternoon. The wind also remained quite active. N.O.A.A. predicted no precipitation, and a fairly significant cloud cover, so they were right about that. I am still rebuilding that file, and it looks like it will take a while to get it all done, so I have the records I need to go to the Wilton town office.
For the overnight the N.W.S. forecasts no precipitation for us, but they are calling for fog in the river valleys. Their estimate of the cloud cover may once again protect us from a frost (69%/81%/63%/49%). One of these days there will be no protection. There are some echoes showing up in the vicinity of the radar stations, but that may be ground clutter. The Weather Underground model forecast map also shows the area to be free of storms, at least for the next couple of days.
My Weather Stick shows no emotion due to the 68% relative humidity. That is the lowest I have seen when taking a reading in quite a while. Two of my electronic instruments are calling for fair skies with rising barometric pressure. The remote weather station forecasts cloudy skies with steady barometric pressure. I think we will see some clouds overnight, and we will not have any precipitation or frost. I know I am going out on a limb there.

Close, But No Cigar!

Did you here that whistling past your ear. That was the bullet that missed us. Here in Wilton, Maine we still have not had a frost. The combination of wind, cloud cover and air mass worked together to keep us above the freezing mark. As I recall, a general rule of thumb is for the trees to be stripped of their leaves by the end of the Fryeburg Fair. That fair ended yesterday, and thee are still plenty of leaves on the trees, and a great deal of color. N.O.A.A. had predicted mixed precipitation for our area overnight, but I do not find any precipitation other than heavy dew this morning. They missed that one.
For today, the forecast is for no precipitation, but significant cloud cover (51%/55%/59%/58%). The NEXRAD radar does not show any storm cells in our area, or moving toward us. The Weather Underground model forecast maps are also showing us in the clear today, and for the next couple of days.
My Weather Stick is still frowning slightly, and at 75% relative humidity I am not surprised. The electronic instruments do not seem to agree this morning. My Weather Station calls for fair skies with rising barometric pressure. My Min/Max Thermometer calls for a mix of clear and cloudy skies with falling barometric pressure. Finally, my remote weather station forecasts clouds with rising barometric pressure. What I can see outside right now are partly cloudy skies with the trees being blown quite a bit. I think a mix of sun and clouds is probably what we will have today, and temperatures in the low fifties.

A Very Cool Day Indeed!

The temperature never got to the middle fifties today. I did not go outside to work on the wood because I had too much paperwork to do to get ready for my battle with the tax assessor in Wilton. Their estimate of the worth of my property and the fact that I am a working farm has my property taxes up by over 16%. That is wrong. This is not Wilton, Connecticut, and the valuation they have come up with would fit there, not here. I have no "view" other than the "Beans of Egypt Maine" and the woods around us. I am almost ready to put it no the market and move if I cannot get any satisfaction. This whole tax valuation is wrong. There are people who have "views" of the lake and waterfront property that have had no increase, and farmers like me that are being raped.
Oh well, back to the weather. We had no precipitation and a fair bit of wind during the day today. There were some cumulus clouds, and they are still hanging around. Depending on the wind and the cloud cover we may lose gardens tonight. Be advised. For the overnight the N.W.S. forecasts light mixed precipitation all night. MIXED PRECIPITAITON, with the temperature not falling below 38. This should be an interesting ride. The NEXRAD radar does not show much in the way of precipitation, either regionally or locally. As I noted there are quite a few cumulus clouds hanging around so the cloud cover prediction may be right (59%/56%/52%/52%).
My Weather Stick is only frowning a little right now. All three of the electronic instruments forecast rising barometric pressure. Two of them forecast fair skies, while the remote weather station forecasts a mix of fair and cloudy skies. Here again, I feel that we will still see some unsettled weather as a result of all the clouds out there. The temperature is going to get close to the freezing mark, but I am not sure it will make it.

The N,W.S. forecast the temperature correctly for all four of the recording periods. That was good. They did not have one of the points of relative humidity forecast correctly. That was not good on their part. The relative humidity has again gotten away from them.

We Had Some Rain, But No Frost Overnight!

Overnight we had some rain, but my system shut down around 23:15 (right after I finished my report). My analog rain gauge shows 2.50 inches of rain since the start of October. I think I missed one other storm as well. I will include the 0.69 inches of rain parenthetically for the rest of the month. Just so you know, this is not the result of Wildblue, but the provision of power by Central Maine Power Co. I was off line from 23:23 until 01:30. I am glad this was not during the winter because it would have gotten quite cold in the house in that length of time. "Just flip a switch and we are there." I have switches flipped all the time, and sometimes they are there and sometimes they are not. They are only slightly more reliable than Verizon. If I could go totally off the grid at reasonable cost I would in a heartbeat. I would love to be able to sell power back to them instead of the other way around.
For today the N.W.S. forecasts light scattered showers all day with cloud cover of 72%, 77%, 70%/ and63%. That is enough cloud cover to support showers. The NEXRAD radar is showing some showers moving off to our east rapidly. The Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that the rest of today should be precipitation free for our area in Wilton, Maine.
My Weather Stick is back to frowning, and I am frowning at the 86% relative humidity too. My Electronic Weather Station is calling for fair skies with rising barometric pressure as is the Min/Max Thermometer. The remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions with steady barometric pressure. I guess I blew it last night when I called for clearing skies. I guess I am entitled to be as wrong as the professionals, since I am but a practiced amateur. For today it seems to be cloudy with a threat of showers, but that could change in a heartbeat. We must remember this is New England, and the weather can change at a moment's notice.

Another Great Fall Day, Bright With Fall Colors!

N.O.A.A. predicted that we would have no precipitation today, and they were right about that. It was a great day to be working outside, or in. It was dry, and the wind was a bit sharp, but a good day anyway.
For the overnight the N.W.S. is forecasting light scattered showers all night, and the cloud cover may support that (49%/100%/100%.80%). The NEXRAD radar does show some showers in the area, but they are widely scattered and moving in our direction,.
My Weather stick has not totally forgotten how to smile, although it is more of a smirk. My electronic instruments (the Weather Station and Min/Max Thermometer) say fair skies and rising barometric pressure. The remote weather station forecasts clouds and steady barometric pressure. I think things will continue to clear, that we will have no rain, and it will drop below freezing tonight. Cover the tender vegetation if you want to save it tonight. Otherwise be prepared to lose it.

The N,W.S. forecast the temperature correctly for three of the four periods. They missed the 11:00 hour point by 6.2 degrees. Their estimation of the relative humidity was correct only at 08:00 hours. They seem to be able to forecast the temperature most of the time, but they do not seem to be able to estimate the relative humidity at all/

There Is A Change Afoot!

Wow, did the air mass change? The cloud cover moved off after the rain stopped last night, and the temperature plummeted into the upper thirties. Right now, there are some clouds, but when I checked at 05:30 the sky was clear. On a historical note: 701 years ago today King Phillip IV of France in concert with Pope Clement V arrested Jacques Demolay, Geoffrey de Goneville and Guy of Averne, the three Grand Masters of the Knights Templar as heretics. They, along with the rest of the Knights had amassed much wealth, that the Pope and the King wanted. They did not get it, nor did they get the navy that the Knights had built. Those three Grand Masters were ultimately burned at the stake because they would not give up their comrades despite the torture they were put through. I understand that documents in the Vatican archives, which have been unearthed completely exonerate the Templars, and articles soon to be published will detail that. So much for the infallibility of the Pope. I am a modern day Templar, and proud to be such.
Back to the weather. For today, the N.W.S. predicts no precipitation for this area of Wilton, Maine. Just a little north of us they are predicting light scattered showers with (gasp) light scattered SNOW showers for the highest elevations in Western Maine. I suspect the ski areas will start to make snow, if they have not started already. The NEXRAD radar indicates that the storms are moving off, and the Weather Underground model forecast maps indicate that the sky should be clear by this afternoon.
My Weather Stick has forgotten how to smile, probably because the air has remained so humidity laden. The memory of smiles should come back to it. All three of my electronic instruments predict rising barometric pressure. Two of them forecast fair skies today. The remote weather station forecasts cloudy conditions. I see blue sky, although there are some clouds moving through. With the wind moving the trees around, I expect to see a great deal of sunshine today, but I do not think the temperature will get as high as N.O.A.A. predicts. It should be a great day though. Beware the overnight, I suspect that we may see some pockets of frost tonight or tomorrow night, so protect that tender vegetation. You may yet get a few more days of production out of your garden, but do not count on it.
